New & Used 2026 BMW M5 for Sale nearCarbondale, IL

Is the 2026 BMW M5 a good car?

The 2026 BMW M5 earns a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

BMW positions it as a high-performance version of the midsize 5 Series, and the car’s appeal is strongest when you want racetrack and autobahn capability without giving up everyday usability. For 2026, the changes are limited to a more powerful onboard charger and more paint options, so the core formula remains the same: serious speed, plug-in hybrid versatility, and real-world comfort.

The trade-offs are just as clear. The design may be polarizing, and the dashboard and interior are described as awkward and gaudy.

With 32.8% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW M5 reliable?

The 2026 BMW M5 is presented as a plug-in hybrid performance car with a broad capability range, and BMW’s chassis and powertrain controls are described as well-integrated and adjustable. The car’s performance hardware is also framed as confidence-inspiring, with grippy tires, AWD, and ride quality that stays tolerable even in firmer settings.

BMW also gives you a useful ownership perk: the onboard charger’s maximum power rate rises for 2026, which should make home charging more convenient than before.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is a complex high-performance hybrid with expensive hardware, so maintenance and repair costs can be higher than on a simpler luxury sedan.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and inspect the car carefully, especially if it has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Pay close attention to wear on the brakes, tires, and interior surfaces, and make sure the plug-in hybrid system and charging equipment work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard car already brings a dramatic exterior, a glass roof with power sunshade, Merino leather front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters and M buttons. The optional Executive Package adds front and rear seat heating plus front-seat ventilation, so base cars miss some comfort features.
• Powertrain: You get a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, an eight-speed automatic, a plug-in hybrid system, and M-specific xDrive AWD. Output is 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, with rear-drive capability available when the front axle is decoupled.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant, while higher-speed hands-free driving is not offered.
• Infotainment: The standard BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with iDrive 8.5, YouTube streaming, AirConsole gaming, a 5G antenna, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and digital key functionality.
• Fuel efficiency: The sedan is rated at 25 miles of electric range and 14 mpg combined in hybrid mode. The wagon is rated at 24 miles of electric range and 13 mpg combined.

Which 2026 BMW M5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW M5 is offered in 2 trim levels: sedan and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• sedan: This is the lighter, quicker, and more affordable choice, and it’s the best-value trim if you want the M5’s core performance and plug-in hybrid versatility without paying wagon money. It also delivers the strongest quoted acceleration and the longest electric range.
• Touring: Choose this if you want the same performance formula with more cargo flexibility and a more distinctive body style. It costs more, but it gives you the most practical version of the M5.

The safety package note is the same across the lineup: the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant, while higher-speed hands-free driving is not offered.
