Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.3/10 expert rating, and the model-year updates focus on styling, materials, feature content, ride comfort, and handling. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

For you, that means the XC90 is especially compelling if you want a premium-feeling three-row SUV with a refined design and user-friendly technology. The main trade-offs are that semi-autonomous driving is not available, and the top-tier sound system costs extra even on the top trim.

The market also looks reasonably favorable, with 36.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The XC90’s safety and driver-assistance setup is a strong sign of careful engineering, and the model’s standard systems operated smoothly during testing. The powertrain lineup also leans toward practical ownership, with mild-hybrid options designed for smoother delivery and improved fuel economy, plus a plug-in hybrid that can deliver up to 33 miles of pure-electric range when charged regularly.

The plug-in hybrid does require regular charging to deliver its fuel-saving benefits, and the heavier hybrid setup can add complexity compared with the simpler gas-assisted versions. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is likely lowest if you choose a well-maintained example and match the powertrain to your charging habits.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a plug-in hybrid. Focus on overall condition, evidence of regular maintenance, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Core, Plus, and Ultra each build on the XC90’s premium feel, with the refreshed styling and interior updates carrying through the lineup. The Plus and Ultra trims add the crystal shift knob, and the Ultra brings more upscale equipment, so base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps.
• Powertrain: The XC90 offers mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The B5 is the most user-friendly choice, while the B6 adds more power, and the T8 plug-in hybrid delivers the strongest output and up to 33 miles of pure-electric range when charged regularly.
• Safety package: Standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. There is no hands-free highway-driving system.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and uses a new user interface with a fixed menu bar and contextual bar. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C cable, and the Ultra trim adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The B5 mild-hybrid setup is described as improving fuel economy, and the T8 plug-in hybrid offers up to 27 mpg when used as intended and charged regularly.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it makes the XC90’s style, safety, and family-friendly layout accessible at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the XC90 experience without paying for extra luxury touches.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds meaningful upscale content, including the crystal shift knob and access to richer interior materials. If you want the sweet spot between price and premium feel, this is the one to target.
• Ultra: This is the trim for you if you want the most complete XC90 experience, including the head-up display and the available premium audio upgrade. It makes the most sense if you care about top-end comfort and tech.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the XC90 still does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.

• Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,813 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 94.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $50,651, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $50,651 sits slightly below last year's $55,235.

That decline suggests the XC90 is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can help you buy more SUV for the money today. If you plan to sell later, the same trend means your resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than higher-mileage or lightly equipped versions.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is too new to have been crash-tested by independent safety organizations, but its predecessors as well as the automaker itself have established quite the reputation. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. The main caveat is that it does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.6% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• The 2025 XC90 gets a second substantial refresh with updated styling, materials, feature offerings, and ride-focused mechanical tweaks.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $44,411, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $50,651 average.
• It remains appealing for its beautifully styled design and plug-in hybrid availability.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version with the latest updates, the 2025 is the better pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable with an older version, the 2024 is the value play.
