Why it stands out
The 2025 Subaru Forester stands out by refining a formula that already made it one of Subaru’s top sellers and one of the more popular compact crossovers in its segment. Rather than reinventing the vehicle, Subaru appears to have focused on making it better equipped and more polished, with the most obvious changes centered on its looks. That conservative approach may not make it the most striking crossover on the road, but it does keep the Forester true to its established character.
What makes this version especially appealing is the combination of standard all-wheel drive, confident handling in adverse conditions, and a quieter cabin than before. The 2025 model also brings more advanced tech and safety offerings, along with a better-equipped base model, which should broaden its appeal to buyers who want practicality without giving up modern conveniences. The tradeoffs are familiar ones: the styling remains generic, the infotainment graphics feel dated, and there is no hybrid option available.

Im a big guy (62) and I really like the headroom. We currently own an Outback and that car would have been more practical (towing). However, I feel more upright in my Forester instead of reclined in the Outback.

How much does the 2025 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $31,093 |
| Year-Round Low | $31,093 |
| Year-Round High | $33,288 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $33,292 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.61% |
Prices have softened 6.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 6,009 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2025 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2025 Subaru Forester earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The Forester’s appeal is rooted in practicality, standard all-wheel drive, and a quieter cabin than before. It also brings more advanced tech and safety offerings, plus a better-equipped base model, which broadens its usefulness if you want an everyday compact crossover that stays true to Subaru’s formula.
The trade-offs are familiar: the styling remains generic, the infotainment graphics feel dated, and there is no hybrid option available.
With 37.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still enough market flexibility to shop selectively.
Is the 2025 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Forester’s reliability case is supported by its practical, function-first design and Subaru’s emphasis on durability-oriented capability. The standard all-wheel-drive setup and quieter cabin for 2025 also point to a model that has been refined rather than overcomplicated.
Its powertrain is straightforward: every 2025 Forester uses a 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder with a CVT and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. That simplicity can be a plus for long-term ownership, especially if you prefer a proven layout over a more complex alternative.
Subaru also adds a maintenance perk in the form of a first scheduled maintenance visit that is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical novelty and more about choosing a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter most.
What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Subaru Forester?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, even when the market looks clean. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is better equipped for 2025, with standard roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, steering-responsive LED headlights, cloth upholstery, and two 7-inch touchscreens. Higher trims add more upscale materials and features, while the Sport brings bronze accents and StarTex seating surfaces.
- Powertrain: Every 2025 Forester uses a 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. X-Mode becomes standard at the Premium trim level, and the Sport and higher trims get a dual-function version.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard, along with a rear seat reminder system. For 2025, the system gains a wider field of view from a third standard camera that helps it spot cyclists and pedestrians earlier, and an electric brake booster is also added.
- Infotainment: The base trim keeps two 7-inch touchscreens and wired smartphone projection, while the 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system is standard on all but the base trim and adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. OTA updates are standard, and Premium and up add dual front USB-A and USB-C ports, a wireless charging pad, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the Forester at 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined. Sport and Touring trims return 25/32/28.
Which 2025 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2025 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want standard all-wheel drive, roof rails, alloy wheels, LED headlights, and Subaru’s core safety tech. It also keeps the simpler dual-screen setup, so it suits you if you care more about fundamentals than screen size.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds X-Mode, the 11.6-inch infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and extra convenience features. If you want the biggest jump in everyday usability without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the one to focus on.
- Sport: This trim adds the bronze exterior accents, 19-inch wheels, StarTex seating, and dual-function X-Mode. It makes sense if you want a more distinctive look and a bit more capability-oriented hardware.
- Limited: This trim moves you into leather seating surfaces and adds more upscale comfort and tech content. It’s the right choice if you want a more premium-feeling Forester without going all the way to the top.
- Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with leather seating, a low-profile roof rack, navigation, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon system, and the most advanced available safety and convenience features. Buy this if you want the most content and don’t mind paying for it.
Touring also gets the most advanced safety hardware, while Emergency Stop Assist is limited to vehicles equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Subaru Forester?
The market looks moderately favorable for selective buyers.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,009 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 94.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $31,093, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2025 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $31,093 sits slightly below last year's $33,292.
That decline suggests the market has cooled enough to give you more negotiating room today, but it also means future sellers may face a softer pricing environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can help protect your eventual resale position.
The Forester’s broad appeal as a practical, all-wheel-drive compact crossover should continue to support demand. Even so, resale will depend heavily on trim, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2025 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2025 Subaru Forester is too new to have been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight suite comes standard, and for 2025 it gains a wider field of view thanks to a third standard camera that can spot cyclists and pedestrians earlier. A rear seat reminder system is also standard, and Subaru adds an electric brake booster.
A key safety upgrade is Emergency Stop Assist, which can slow the vehicle to a stop, notify emergency services, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors if the driver becomes unresponsive while adaptive cruise control is active. That feature is only available on vehicles equipped with the driver distraction-mitigation system, which essentially limits it to the Touring trim.
Touring also adds a digital rearview mirror, surround view monitor, and reverse automatic braking.
Should I buy a 2025 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2025 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2025 model adds a quieter cabin, more advanced tech, and stronger standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2026 if:
- It adds a rugged Wilderness setup with more off-road-focused hardware.
The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of value, inventory, and updated standard equipment, the 2025 is the safer buy. If your priority is rugged capability and you’re willing to wait for a more specialized version, the 2026 path makes more sense. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2025 remains the better place to start because the market is already showing softer pricing and solid deal availability.
