Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender earns an expert rating of 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

The Defender’s appeal is its mix of serious off-road ability, a more refined personality than many rugged SUVs, and a wide range of body styles and powertrains. It is also described as fun to drive and unusually flexible for shoppers who want one vehicle that can handle daily use and rough terrain.

The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy, poor on-pavement handling, and poor rear visibility.

For you, that means the Defender makes the most sense if you value capability, customization, and character more than efficiency or easygoing road manners.

34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is presented as a premium SUV with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty and roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership anxiety.

Its off-road hardware and refined driver aids suggest a vehicle built to handle demanding use, and the powertrain is described as delivering robust, smooth acceleration. The expert review also notes that the Defender’s technology and controls operate in a refined manner with few reasons to complain.

Land Rover’s own cost-effectiveness notes also point to the brand’s broader reputation concerns, so long-term ownership risk remains something you should weigh carefully as a used buyer.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a vehicle that may have been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy city driving. Focus on tire condition, suspension wear, brake feel, and any signs that the vehicle’s technology or driver-assistance systems were heavily used or poorly maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 110 four-door is the sweet spot in the lineup, while the 90 looks stubby and the 130 carries more visual mass over the rear wheels. Base versions can feel less richly equipped than higher-spec models, while the X trim adds upgraded interior materials and Land Rover’s off-roading technology as standard equipment.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, plus turbocharged or supercharged V8 options. The six-cylinder delivers smooth, robust acceleration, while the broader range gives you flexibility depending on how much performance you want.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Lane-centering assist is available with adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: The Defender uses an 11.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a configurable digital driver display, and connected services. The system also supports a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote engine start.
• Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle returned 16.2 mpg in observed driving, and the window sticker called for 19 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2025 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 90, 110, 130, OCTA.

Here's the short version:

• 90: This is the shortest and most distinctive body style, but it is also the most niche. Choose it if you want the two-door Defender look and can live with the compact footprint.
• 110: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it is the sweet spot in the lineup. It balances the Defender’s rugged character with the most broadly useful four-door layout.
• 130: Pick this if you want the most passenger and cargo space. It is the extended four-door version and suits buyers who need more room for people or gear.
• OCTA: This is the high-performance headline model for 2025 and the most expensive choice. It is the one to consider if you want the most exclusive, most capable-feeling version of the Defender lineup.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, with lane-centering assist available when you use adaptive cruise control.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop with a clear target and be ready to move when you find the right listing.

• Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,678 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.18% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 95.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $68,748, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $68,748 sits slightly below last year's $74,067.

That price movement suggests the Defender has softened enough to create a better entry point for used buyers. If you buy well now, you may avoid paying the higher prices that were common a year ago.

For a future seller, the current trend means you should expect value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment. Higher-spec versions and well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected or heavily used trucks, but the broader market is still pricing this model below where it was a year ago.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips the Defender with several driver aids, and they work in a refined manner with few reasons to complain about them. Highlights include automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. When using adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist is available.

The review also notes that lane-keep assist can behave oddly in some situations, and adaptive cruise can struggle a bit in heavy traffic. Crash-test ratings were unavailable at press time.

Should I buy a 2025 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.18% compared with last year.
• The 2025 lineup adds the high-performance Defender OCTA and keeps the Defender’s broad body-style and powertrain range.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $57,071, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $68,748 average.
• It offers a rugged-yet-refined feel with expanded trims and features.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It adds subtle styling updates, a larger touchscreen, and new color and accessory options.

The bottom line: If you want the newest used Defender with the broadest current-market context, the 2025 is the primary target. If price matters most, the 2024 is the smarter value play, while the 2026 is worth watching if you want the freshest updates and can pay more.
