Is the 2025 BMW M5 a good car?

The 2025 BMW M5 earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.

It stands out as a plug-in hybrid performance sedan that blends extreme speed with everyday usability, and it offers up to 25 miles of all-electric driving. That dual personality makes it especially appealing if you want a car that can feel brutally quick without giving up daily versatility.

The trade-offs are real, though: the exhaust is too quiet for a performance car, and the ride is too harsh for a luxury sedan. It also carries a polarizing design, so you should expect the styling to be a matter of taste.

35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2025 BMW M5 reliable?

The 2025 BMW M5 is presented as a high-performance plug-in hybrid with a broad everyday mission, and its expert evaluation emphasizes strong dynamics and usable electric driving range. It also comes across as a complex performance sedan, with a heavy curb weight and a powertrain that combines a twin-turbo V8, electric motor, and all-wheel drive.

The performance notes point to smooth power delivery and strong launch capability, along with a generally well-sorted chassis. The cost-effectiveness notes also frame it as a compelling package for the level of performance, space, and luxury it delivers.

BMW says the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps soften early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is a highly complex, high-output performance hybrid, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report, verify service records, and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection. Focus especially on how the car drives in Comfort and Sport settings, whether the brakes feel consistent, and whether the cabin and controls show signs of heavy use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin uses a large single screen, iDrive controller, and a clean but subjective design, while the interior materials are described as solid and well screwed together. Base equipment is already generous, so you should pay close attention to whether the car has the optional packages that add convenience and luxury features.
• Powertrain: The M5 combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and a 14.8-kWh battery pack for 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. It can drive on electricity alone for up to 25 miles, and the power delivery is smooth, though full-throttle shifts can get a bit jerky.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, speed limit info, blind-spot monitoring, and Parking Assistant with backup assist and a 360-degree camera system. Driving Assistant Professional adds side collision protection, adaptive cruise control, and Traffic Jam Assistant.
• Infotainment: The car uses iDrive 8.5 on a 14.9-inch center screen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB-C outlets, and a controller-based interface that reduces the need to tap the screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The M5 can travel up to 25 miles on electric power alone, and the tester saw around 14 mpg during hard use.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.65% compared with last year.
• It’s the first plug-in hybrid M5, pairing huge power with up to 25 miles of electric-only driving.

Consider the 2026 if:
