Is the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?

Yes — the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out as Volkswagen’s biggest vehicle, and for 2024 it gets more power, more standard features, and a major refresh that helps it stay competitive in the three-row midsize SUV segment. It’s built for you if you want a roomy family hauler with plenty of cargo space and a spacious third row.

The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, ride quality is poor, and the haptic controls can be troublesome.

40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance of finding a strong value.

Is the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Atlas is positioned as a practical, family-focused SUV, and the 2024 update adds more standard equipment without changing that core mission. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine is described as pulling strongly and smoothly, and the model’s broader refresh helps it feel more current.

Volkswagen also includes two years or 20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, which can help reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Atlas still prioritizes space and utility over refinement, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Volkswagen Atlas?

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of heavy family use, and whether the cabin and controls have held up well.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Atlas lineup includes SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line, and Peak Edition treatments on SE with Technology and SEL. The base SE gets 18-inch alloy wheels, while most other trims get 20-inch wheels and the SEL Premium R-Line gets 21-inch wheels with sportier styling. SE with Technology models add a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting, and the Peak Edition brings black wheels, all-terrain tires, silver body cladding, and blacked-out exterior trim.
• Powertrain: The 2024 Atlas uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque on regular fuel. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: VW’s IQ.Drive package includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist for highway driving. Predictive adaptive cruise control is standard on SEL and higher trim levels, while the SEL Premium R-Line adds park assist and a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: A 12-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster are standard, along with wireless phone charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Six USB-C ports are standard, with up to eight available, and SE with Technology and higher trim levels add a dash cam port.

Which 2024 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line, Peak Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already brings a lot of standard equipment for the money, including heated steering and ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and the full driver-assist suite. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest entry price and don’t need the extra convenience features higher up.
• SE with Technology: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a dash cam port while keeping the Atlas’s core family-friendly strengths intact. If you want a more upscale feel without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the one to target.
• SEL: This trim adds more premium convenience, including a head-up display and predictive adaptive cruise control, and it’s also where leather upholstery becomes available. It makes sense if you want a more polished daily driver and are willing to pay for extra tech.
• Peak Edition: This is the choice if you want the Atlas with a more outdoorsy look, blacked-out trim, all-terrain tires, and unique styling details. It’s more about appearance and attitude than hard-core off-road ability.
• SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end pick, with 21-inch wheels, sportier styling, park assist, and a surround-view camera system. Choose it if you want the most features and the most upscale presentation.

The safety package is standard on SEL and higher trim levels, while the base SE gets the core driver-assist features.
