Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma marks the start of the model’s fourth generation with a ground-up redesign. It is also the first Tacoma to share a platform with the larger Toyota Tundra, and it launches in six trim levels, each powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Those changes make this Tacoma feel like a more substantial reset than a routine update, while still keeping the truck’s familiar appeal intact.
What stands out most is how well the 2024 Toyota Tacoma balances its reputation for reliability with strong off-road capability and standard advanced driver-assistance tech. That combination gives it broad appeal for buyers who want a midsize pickup that feels capable and well equipped from the start. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: the cabin can be noisy, manual-adjust seats can be troublesome, and the interior still skews functional even in the top trim.

The Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab not to be confused with Double Cab. Is new though I bought it used but at 17K it's close to new. While I haven't had it long enough for a full review. I have had Toyota PU's before and the last one I had went 225,000 miles and I still sold it for $2200 9/10 years later after I moved from MN to FL. This one has great pickup off of the 2.4 Liter Turbo and though it takes a climb to get into I'm looking into side railing steps via online suppliers. Overall I am happy with the purchase though I did bite in on the extended warranty since my trade in a downpayment brought the montly costs down low enough to make it affordable. I see F-150's and F-250's and Dodge Ram Trucks of similar make and size but for my money Toyota Truck are legendary for their ability to take wear and tear.

Wow, what a vehicle. It rides as smooth as a Camry. The engineers at Toyota really produced a unique, powerful truck thats affordable. I bought the supersonic red and it is beautiful, plus all my friends and acquaintances love the looks. I get a lot of stares from people.

It stands out for strong off-road capability and standard advanced driver-assistance tech, which makes it especially appealing if you want a truck that feels capable and well equipped from the start.
The tradeoffs are real: the cabin can be noisy, manual-adjust seats can be troublesome, and the interior still skews functional even in the top trim. Even so, the Tacoma’s broad capability and updated hardware make it a strong fit if you want a rugged, modernized midsize truck rather than a luxury-leaning one.
29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Tacoma’s reputation for reliability is reinforced by its redesign rather than undermined by it. Toyota gave it a new platform, new turbocharged powertrains, and updated driver-assistance tech, but the truck still leans into the brand’s durability-first identity. Expert testing also points to a truck that feels broadly well sorted in daily use, with smooth shifting from the automatic transmission and no major complaints about on-road behavior.
The performance notes also support confidence in the new setup: the automatic transmission is described as smooth and appropriately timed, and the new steering system is said to have addressed the vagueness of the outgoing model. On the cost side, Toyota’s longevity reputation and the Tacoma’s efficient packaging suggest a truck built for the long haul.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core durability and more about living with the Tacoma’s practical compromises, especially cabin noise and seat usability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy commuting. Focus on cabin condition, seat operation, and how the truck feels on a test drive, since the interior and controls are where the Tacoma’s compromises are most likely to show up. If you’re comparing trims, pay close attention to which features are standard versus optional so you don’t assume a lower trim has the same equipment as a higher one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR trim uses 17-inch steel wheels, while most trims move to 17-inch alloys and TRD Sport and Limited get 18-inch alloys. The cabin is still function-first even in the top trim, so you should not expect a plush interior just because you move up the range.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque on most trims, while the base SR is tuned to 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are both available, and the eight-speed automatic is the transmission to favor if you want the easiest daily driving experience.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it now includes Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Road-sign assist and an emergency stop system are also included, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on all but the base trim, where it can be added as part of a package.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, while higher trims get a 14-inch center display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless charging plus dual front-row USB-C ports can be added.
- Fuel efficiency: The least-efficient version is expected to get 20 mpg combined, with the automatic and 4WD rated up to 21 mpg combined and FWD up to 23 mpg combined.
Which 2024 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Pre-Runner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it gives you the redesigned Tacoma experience with the standard turbocharged engine and the core safety tech. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the new generation and are comfortable with the most basic wheel and cabin presentation.
- SR5: This is the trim to watch if you want a more balanced everyday truck, since it sits above the base model without jumping into the more specialized off-road or luxury-oriented versions. It should suit you if you want a practical middle ground rather than a niche setup.
- TRD Pre-Runner: This trim is for buyers who want a more distinctive truck setup without moving all the way into the more specialized off-road trims. It is a better fit if you want a step up in character and equipment while staying focused on street use.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds sport-tuned shocks and 18-inch alloy wheels, which gives it a more road-focused personality. It is a good fit if you want a Tacoma that feels a little sharper on pavement without chasing the most rugged hardware.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim if you want the Tacoma’s off-road identity to be front and center, since it gets monotube Bilstein shocks. Choose it if you care most about capability and want the truck’s hardware to match that use case.
- Limited: This is the most comfort-oriented gas trim, with heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats and an available adaptive variable suspension. It suits you best if you want the most upscale daily-driver version, though the cabin still keeps a functional truck feel.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on all but the base trim, and it can be added to the SR as part of a package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,696 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $37,875.33, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $38,801 sits slightly below last year's $39,820.
That price movement suggests the Tacoma is holding value reasonably well, even as the market has softened a bit. For a future seller, that means you may not see dramatic depreciation pressure if you buy at the right price and keep the truck in strong condition. The Tacoma’s broad appeal, updated tech, and reputation for reliability should continue to support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it now includes Lane Tracing Assist, lane-departure alert with steering assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Road-sign assist and an emergency stop system are also part of the package, and adaptive cruise control now offers four following-distance settings instead of three.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on all but the base trim, where it can be added as part of a package. That means you should check the equipment list carefully if you are shopping the entry model, since the safety story is strongest once you move beyond the base trim.
Should I buy a 2024 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a ground-up redesign, a new platform, and standard advanced driver-assistance tech.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,595, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $38,801 average.
- It has a long-earned reputation for reliability and a size that suits many buyers well.
The bottom line: If you want the most updated Tacoma with the strongest mix of tech, safety, and capability, the 2024 is the better long-term pick. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2023 remains the value play, especially if you can find one in good condition and do not need the newer-generation upgrades.
