CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,680 currently listed for sale and an average price of $46,543.00, 33.0% of 2024 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Toyota 4Runner 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 4.5 / 10.
92.0% of 2024 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. It remains an accomplished off-road-capable vehicle, and its all-terrain abilities are a major part of its appeal. Buyers who want a traditional SUV with plenty of cargo space will also find that the 4Runner has practical strengths beyond trail use.
At the same time, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner shows its age in ways that matter to many shoppers. Its aging platform is in desperate need of a full redesign, and it trails newer rivals when it comes to technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power. The driving experience is also held back by poor handling, sluggish performance, and poor fuel economy. Even so, its reputation for toughness and its spacious, utility-first character continue to make it appealing to buyers who value capability over refinement.

The features are great. However, I have it a 4 because the color is off!!! If you look at the photo it is obviously Red. The description says it is Terra. I called the dealership and it is defininetly not red but a brown color, terra cotta.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and rugged aesthetics, and they also like the improved ride quality and features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The trade-offs are clear: fuel economy is a recurring complaint, and some drivers say it can be loud in daily commuting.
That lines up with the 4Runner’s use case as an adventure-first SUV: it makes more sense if you value cargo room and off-road capability than modern refinement. Good and great deals account for 32.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about keeping for the long haul, especially because it’s associated with durability and a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation by describing it as reliable and durable.
Its rugged, proven mechanical setup supports that impression, even if the platform itself is aging. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related wear and dated hardware can matter more than the badge on the hood.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or heavy commuting. Focus on overall condition, because a rugged SUV can hide wear in the suspension, brakes, and interior trim. It’s also worth checking that the features you want are actually present, since equipment varies by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trims are more stripped down, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience features; the Limited also adds front and rear parking proximity sensors, and the TRD Pro and Limited include a surround-view camera system.
- Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, but the five-speed automatic holds it back on-road; most trims are rear-wheel drive with four-wheel drive available, while the TRD Pro comes standard with 4WD and a two-speed transfer case.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The system uses an eight-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it lacks the more advanced off-road apps and gauges found in some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings come in at 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined, and the expert assessment also calls out poor fuel economy.
Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: SR5 and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the entry point, but it misses the more upscale hardware and convenience touches found higher up the range.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro is the most compelling choice if you want the strongest off-road hardware, standard 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, a surround-view camera system, and a 15-speaker JBL audio system.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the Limited trim gets the extra parking proximity sensors if that matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers: there’s enough inventory to shop carefully, but the best-priced listings can still move quickly.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,673 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.11% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 92.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,834.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $46,543 sits slightly above last year's $46,033.
That modest increase suggests the market still values this model year, even with its aging platform and dated tech. For a future seller, that can help support pricing if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and equipped with the right trim. The fact that demand remains steady also means you may not need to discount aggressively if your 4Runner is in strong condition.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2024 Toyota 4Runner four out of five stars for overall and frontal crash protection, five stars for side impacts, and three stars in rollover evaluations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave similarly mixed results, with its highest score of "Good" for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests. In the newer small overlap frontal test, the Institute lists an incomplete rating with some worrying "Marginal" and "Poor" results.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system, while only the Limited gets front and rear parking proximity sensors.
The mixed crash-test picture is the main caution here, especially if safety is a top priority in your used-car search.
Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.11% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2024 keeps the 4Runner’s rugged off-road focus but remains dated in tech, safety, and efficiency.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,573, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $46,543 average.
- It offers a traditional SUV feel with strong reliability and off-road capability.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $52,192, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $46,543 average.
- It brings a redesigned 4Runner with more power, better efficiency, and more modern technology.
The bottom line: If you want the current-generation 4Runner and can find a clean, fairly priced example, the 2024 is still a reasonable buy. If you’re focused on value, the 2023 is the smarter price-sensitive path. If you want the biggest leap in capability and technology, the 2025 is the better long-term choice, though it costs more.
