Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 a good car?

Generally — the 2024 Mazda CX-90 earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a strong overall showing. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The CX-90’s appeal is rooted in its three-row crossover mission: it aims to be genuinely enjoyable to drive while still serving family-hauling duties. The overview and test-drive summary both emphasize its brilliant handling, composure on twisty roads, stylish design, and strong powertrains, including a turbocharged straight-six and a PHEV option.

The main trade-offs are the PHEV electric range, which could be better, and technology that can be frustrating. That means you’re getting a more driver-focused family SUV, but you should be ready to live with some interface quirks.

Good and great deals account for 34.4% of listings, so there’s a meaningful share of inventory worth pursuing.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The CX-90’s reliability case is helped by its strong overall character: the overview highlights a well-rounded, upscale-feeling three-row crossover, while the expert summary praises its handling, powertrains, and composure. The performance notes also point to a modern powertrain lineup with a turbocharged inline-six and a plug-in hybrid option, which gives you flexibility in how you use the vehicle.

Mazda’s cost-effectiveness notes also suggest the CX-90 is positioned as a value play relative to luxury-branded alternatives, which can matter if you plan to keep it for years. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that the technology and PHEV-specific range limitations may be the parts you notice most over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-90?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a PHEV. Focus on overall condition, how the tech behaves in daily use, and whether the powertrain and transmission feel smooth in normal driving.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The CX-90 is sold in many trims, and the lower-end models won’t look or feel as striking as the top-shelf versions. The lineup spans multiple powertrains, and the premium interior touches are concentrated in the higher trims.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a turbocharged inline-six and a plug-in hybrid setup. The turbo I6 delivers strong output, while the PHEV aims to improve efficiency and adds an electric driving component.
• Safety package: i-Activsense comes standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support is also present on the top-spec test vehicle.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a rotary controller and hard buttons instead of a touchscreen for native functions. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and wireless capability appears on higher-level trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The PHEV is rated at 56 MPGe in combined driving and has an all-electric range of 26 miles.

Which 2024 Mazda CX-90 trim should I buy?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is offered in 11 trim levels: Turbo Select, Turbo Preferred, Turbo Preferred Plus, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus, PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium, PHEV Premium Plus, Turbo S, Turbo S Premium, Turbo S Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• Turbo Select: This is the entry point to the CX-90 lineup, but it still gives you the core CX-90 experience: stylish design, standard all-wheel drive, and the strong safety suite. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the model, but it won’t feel as upscale as the higher trims.
• Turbo Preferred: This trim adds a step up in comfort and equipment while keeping the CX-90’s appealing driving character intact. It’s a sensible middle-ground choice if you want more features without chasing the top end.
• Turbo Preferred Plus: This is a stronger value pick if you want more of the CX-90’s premium feel without going all the way to luxury pricing. It should suit you if you want a better-equipped gas model for daily family use.
• Turbo Premium: This trim moves the CX-90 further into upscale territory and is a good fit if you care about a richer cabin and more convenience features. It’s a logical choice if you want the CX-90’s style and driving dynamics with more polish.
• Turbo Premium Plus: This is the best-value gas trim if you want the most complete version of the standard turbocharged lineup without stepping into the highest-performance model. It should suit you if you want a well-rounded, near-luxury family SUV.
• PHEV Preferred: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the efficiency benefits that come with it. It’s the right fit if your driving includes short trips and you can regularly charge.
• PHEV Premium: This is the better-equipped plug-in hybrid choice for buyers who want the PHEV powertrain plus more comfort and convenience. It makes sense if you want efficiency without giving up too much equipment.
• PHEV Premium Plus: This is the most appealing PHEV trim if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and a more premium feature set. It’s the one to target if you want the most complete electrified CX-90.
• Turbo S: This is the performance-oriented gas trim, with the strongest straight-six tuning and the most dramatic character. It suits you if you care most about power and driving feel.
• Turbo S Premium: This trim adds more luxury and equipment to the performance model while preserving its stronger engine character. It’s a good fit if you want the Turbo S experience with more comfort.
• Turbo S Premium Plus: This is the top-spec choice if you want the most powerful and most fully equipped CX-90. It’s the one to buy if you want the best blend of performance, features, and prestige.

The standard safety suite is a major plus across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up just to get core driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Mazda CX-90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,943 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.07% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,339, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Mazda CX-90's resale value?

The current average of $30,339 sits slightly below last year's $33,364.

That price movement suggests the CX-90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future buyers but may limit upside for a quick resale. If you buy well now, you’re starting from a lower base than last year’s shoppers did.

For a future seller, that means the market may be more forgiving if you keep mileage reasonable and the vehicle in strong condition. The CX-90’s premium feel and strong driving appeal should help it remain desirable, especially among shoppers who want something more distinctive than a typical three-row SUV.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 safe?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

i-Activsense is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support is also available on the top-spec test vehicle, blending lane-centering with adaptive cruise control.

Mazda’s safety tech is a clear strength here, and the overview suggests the CX-90 is built to be a family-friendly three-row crossover with a premium bent. The main caveat is that neither IIHS nor NHTSA crash-tested this model year in the provided data, so you’re relying on the standard equipment and Mazda’s broader safety reputation rather than published results.

Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-90 or consider a different year?

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 stands out for its brilliant handling, strong powertrains, and 20% discount from the BMW X5.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $32,837, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $30,339 average.
• It adds a more distinctive three-row SUV package with premium materials and unusual powertrain choices.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2024 is the stronger starting point because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for the next model year’s updated presentation, the 2025 is the secondary path to consider.
