Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 a good car?

Generally — the 2024 Mazda CX-90 earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a strong overall appeal for used shoppers. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It stands out as a three-row crossover that aims to be genuinely enjoyable to drive, not just practical. The CX-90 also brings a turbocharged straight-six engine or a PHEV option, along with rear-wheel-drive architecture, giving it a more driver-focused character than many family haulers.

The main trade-offs are the PHEV electric range, which could be better, and technology that can be frustrating. If you want a family-size SUV with a premium feel and a more engaging driving experience, this one fits that brief well.

40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The CX-90 is described as a vehicle that blends family-friendly space with an unusually engaging driving experience, and Mazda’s safety technology is presented as a strength. Its powertrain lineup also suggests a modern, well-developed design, with a turbocharged inline-six and a plug-in hybrid option.

Mazda says the plug-in hybrid aims to deliver better fuel economy and performance than the outgoing CX-9, and the CX-90’s standard all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic support that sense of engineering focus. The PHEV also uses a 17.8-kWh battery and a 68-kW electric motor, which adds to its complexity but also broadens its capability.

If you’re shopping used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the technology and PHEV-specific hardware may be the areas you’ll want to inspect most carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a PHEV. Focus on overall condition, how the technology operates, and whether the vehicle’s features match the trim level you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The CX-90 is sold in many trims, and lower-end versions won’t look or feel as upscale as the top models. Higher trims add more luxury touches, while the base-level versions are more restrained.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and a plug-in hybrid setup. The PHEV is aimed at better fuel economy and performance, while the turbo I6 is the more traditional powertrain choice.
• Safety package: i-Activsense comes standard on every CX-90 and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support is mentioned on the top-spec model.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a rotary controller instead of a touchscreen for native functions. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and wireless phone projection is available on higher-level trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The CX-90 PHEV is rated at 56 MPGe in combined driving and has an all-electric range of 26 miles.

Which 2024 Mazda CX-90 trim should I buy?

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is offered in 11 trim levels: Turbo Select, Turbo Preferred, Turbo Preferred Plus, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus, PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium, PHEV Premium Plus, Turbo S, Turbo S Premium, Turbo S Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• Turbo Select: This is the entry point, and it gives you the CX-90’s core design, standard all-wheel drive, and standard safety tech without pushing the price too high.
• Turbo Preferred: This is the best-value choice if you want a step up in comfort and equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Turbo Preferred Plus: Choose this if you want more features than the Preferred trim while staying on the gas-engine side of the lineup.
• Turbo Premium: This trim is for you if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it.
• Turbo Premium Plus: This is the gas-powered trim to target if you want a richer feature set and a more luxury-like cabin.
• PHEV Preferred: Pick this if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain and want to enter the PHEV lineup at the lowest point.
• PHEV Premium: This is the middle-ground PHEV choice for shoppers who want more equipment than the base plug-in model.
• PHEV Premium Plus: This is the most appealing PHEV trim if you want the plug-in setup with the most upscale equipment.
• Turbo S: This is the performance-oriented gas trim, with the stronger turbocharged inline-six character and the most dramatic driving feel.
• Turbo S Premium: Choose this if you want the Turbo S powertrain with more premium equipment.
• Turbo S Premium Plus: This is the top-spec choice if you want the most luxurious and fully equipped CX-90 experience.

i-Activsense comes standard on every CX-90, so you don’t need to move up a trim just to get the core safety suite.

• Deal availability: 40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,924 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.03% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 89.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,208, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Mazda CX-90's resale value?

The current average of $30,208 sits slightly below last year's $33,208.

That price movement suggests the CX-90 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside left than a shopper who paid closer to the original average. The model’s strong design, premium feel, and engaging driving character should help keep it appealing to used buyers.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-90 safe?

The CX-90 has not been crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA in the text provided, so there is no crash-test lead to cite here.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

i-Activsense comes standard on every CX-90 and includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, smart brake support with front-crossing and turn-across-traffic identification, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Cruising and traffic support is also mentioned on the top-spec model, where it blends lane-centering with adaptive cruise control.

That standard safety suite is a major strength, especially because features like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are often extra-cost items on other crossovers. The main caveat is that the vehicle has not been crash-tested in the provided data.

Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 40.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 brings a turbocharged straight-six engine or a PHEV option, plus rear-wheel-drive architecture.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $32,611, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $30,208 average.
• It keeps the unusual powertrain choices while adding a more upscale presentation.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2024 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong deal availability and solid accident-free inventory. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2025 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2024.
