Is the 2024 Land Rover Defender a good car?

Yes — the 2024 Land Rover Defender earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.

It stands out as a rugged-yet-refined luxury SUV for you if you want legitimate off-road ability without giving up a more upscale presentation. The Defender’s appeal is especially strong if you like the overlanding look and want a vehicle that feels tailored rather than generic.

The trade-offs are that handling is more cumbersome than most luxury SUVs and fuel economy is below average. Even so, the Defender’s broad powertrain lineup and feature-rich cabin make it a compelling fit if capability matters as much as comfort.

37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2024 Land Rover Defender reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Defender is presented as a sophisticated evolution of a go-anywhere vehicle, with a durable, adventure-ready character and a comfortable, refined ride for daily use. Its standard equipment and upscale materials support that impression, and the powertrain lineup gives you plenty of flexibility.

Its performance and ownership profile point to a vehicle built for demanding conditions, but its premium pricing and complex hardware mean you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition when shopping used. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is buying a neglected example that has seen hard use without proper care.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has been used for towing, trail driving, or frequent short trips. Focus on wear items, signs of off-road use, and whether the equipment on the listing matches the trim and options you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim includes 19-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, partial leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof, and a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel. The X-Dynamic SE adds 20-inch wheels, distinctive styling touches, and ventilated front seats with additional power adjustments, while the X adds a digital rearview mirror camera and partial Windsor leather upholstery. The Outbound removes the third row for more cargo space, which can be a smart fit if you need extra room for gear.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged four-cylinder, a mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and two supercharged 5.0-liter V8 options. The lineup ranges from 296 horsepower in the four-cylinder to 518 horsepower in the strongest V8, and all engines use an eight-speed automatic with full-time active four-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The lane-departure and lane-keeping assist intervention can feel too touchy, so make sure you test those systems on your drive.
• Infotainment: The Defender uses a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.4-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with navigation, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD radio, and a 10-speaker Meridian stereo system.
• Fuel efficiency: The most efficient configuration returns 18 mpg city, 22 highway, 20 combined, while the base four-cylinder in the 90 returns 18 city, 21 highway, 19 combined. The 110 with the six-cylinder returns 17 city, 20 highway, 18 combined, and the least efficient V8 version returns 14 city, 19 highway, 16 combined.

Which 2024 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2024 Land Rover Defender is offered in 5 trim levels: S, X-Dynamic SE, X, Carpathian Edition, and Outbound.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Defender experience with a strong standard equipment list, including heated front seats, a panoramic roof, and the Meridian audio system.
• X-Dynamic SE: This trim adds 20-inch wheels, more distinctive styling, and ventilated front seats, making it a smart step up if you want more comfort and presence without going all the way up the range.
• X: This is the better pick if you want more upscale touches, including the digital rearview mirror camera and partial Windsor leather upholstery.
• Carpathian Edition: Choose this if you want the most aggressive, dark-themed appearance and the 22-inch wheel setup.
• Outbound: This is the one to consider if cargo space matters most, since it removes the third row and gives you more room for gear.

The Defender’s safety equipment is extensive across the lineup, but the lane-departure and lane-keeping assist behavior is worth testing before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Land Rover Defender?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop, but the better listings still deserve quick attention.

• Deal availability: 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,006 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.70% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 92.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $56,405, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $56,405 sits slightly below last year's $67,711.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more favorably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key question is whether you can buy at a discount and preserve value by choosing a well-kept example with desirable equipment.

The Defender’s broad appeal, strong capability image, and premium positioning should continue to support demand among buyers who want a luxury SUV with real off-road credibility. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender comes with an extensive list of standard driver assistance features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite also includes traffic sign recognition, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a 360-degree parking camera system. One caveat is that the lane-departure and lane-keeping assist intervention can feel overly sensitive, so you should test that behavior during your drive.

Should I buy a 2024 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 adds new trims and features, and expands availability of one of its V8 engine options.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $51,395, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $56,405 average.
• It adds the extended Defender 130 and emphasizes heritage, customization, and upscale flexibility.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $67,627, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $56,405 average.
• It broadens the lineup further and adds the high-performance OCTA.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current inventory, softened pricing, and updated features, the 2024 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2023 is the better value path; if you want the newest and most expansive lineup, the 2025 is the step up.
