Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 a good car?

It’s a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV that blends efficiency, safety, and upscale features, though it asks you to accept some compromises. The user rating is 3/5, and the expert rating is 8.00/10.

The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The 2023 XC60 stands out as a plug-in hybrid luxury SUV that can handle electric-only commuting while still giving you gasoline backup for longer trips. That makes it especially appealing if you want to try EV-style driving without fully committing to a pure electric vehicle.

The trade-offs are real: acceleration and braking can be abrupt, rear-seat legroom is tight, and value for the money is questionable. Even so, the combination of stylish design, impressive technology, and strong safety credentials makes it compelling for buyers who prioritize those strengths over space or price.

With 37.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market softness to make careful shopping worthwhile.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 reliable?

The 2023 XC60 is presented as a well-developed SUV that has improved over time, and the plug-in hybrid setup is described as a smart way to ease into electric driving. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the latest version blends style, performance, and efficiency in a way that makes it appealing for daily use.

Its powertrain is described as a refined mix of a turbocharged gasoline engine, rear electric motor, and battery pack, with the electric side adding meaningful range and the hybrid system helping extend usable driving distance. The write-up also notes that the one-pedal driving system and regenerative braking help recapture energy, which supports efficient everyday operation.

If you’re considering one used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the premium hardware and plug-in hybrid complexity can make repairs or upkeep more consequential than on a simpler SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC60?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a plug-in hybrid with premium equipment. Focus on how the drivetrain transitions between electric and gasoline power, whether the brakes feel consistent, and whether the cabin electronics and comfort features work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans Core, Plus, Ultimate, and Polestar Engineered, with Bright or Dark exterior themes. The Ultimate trim brings the most complete equipment set, while the base setup leaves you with fewer luxury touches.
• Powertrain: The XC60 Recharge uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine, an electric motor, and an 18.8-kWh battery pack. It’s rated at 455 horsepower and 423 pound-feet of torque, and it can travel an estimated 35 miles on electricity before switching to hybrid operation.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation can help avoid collisions with oncoming traffic. The Ultimate trim includes all available safety features.
• Infotainment: You get a 12-inch digital instrument panel and a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen with Google Built-in, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto compatibility, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Wi-Fi access.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation recorded 54.6 mpg over a 65-mile route, and Charge mode returned 19.7 mpg on a freeway-heavy trip.

Which 2023 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 is offered in 4 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate, and Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point if you want the XC60 Recharge experience without stretching to the pricier trims. It gives you the plug-in hybrid powertrain and the XC60’s core style and tech, but it won’t feel as richly equipped as the higher trims.
• Plus: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It should give you more of the XC60’s upscale feel without jumping all the way to the most expensive versions.
• Ultimate: This is the best-value trim if you want the fullest expression of the XC60’s luxury and technology. It’s the trim that brought the test vehicle its opulent cabin details, and it also includes all available safety features.
• Polestar Engineered: Choose this if you want the most performance-focused version of the XC60 Recharge. The expert evaluation points to this as the trim for buyers who plan to drive the SUV more aggressively.

The Ultimate trim is the one that comes with all of the XC60’s available safety features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC60?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,269 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,423, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $33,423 sits slightly below last year's $37,271.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than assuming the model will hold its price automatically.

Because the XC60 is a premium SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, well-kept examples should still be easier to position than neglected ones. If you maintain it carefully and keep the battery and charging system in good shape, you’ll be in a better spot when it’s time to sell.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge’s crash-test ratings were not assessed by NHTSA, but the XC60 B5 and B6 earn top marks across the board, including a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Pilot Assist is Volvo’s most advanced driver-assistance system, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability on the highway. The XC60 also includes Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which can help avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles and can brake to prevent an unsafe left turn across traffic.

The main caveat is that the strongest published crash-test results are tied to the mild-hybrid versions, not the Recharge plug-in hybrid. That means you should pay close attention to the exact version you’re shopping.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
• The 2023 XC60 Recharge is highlighted as a compelling plug-in hybrid choice with strong safety and upscale appeal.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,354, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,423 average.
• The 2022 XC60 is a stylish, well-engineered luxury crossover with notable updates and a strong emphasis on safety.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the stronger plug-in hybrid appeal and are willing to pay more for the newer market position. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path and still gives you the XC60’s style, tech, and safety focus.
