Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 a good car?

With a user rating of 3/5 and an expert rating of 8/10, the 2023 Volvo XC60 looks like a strong pick if you value style, technology, and safety more than outright value.

The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The XC60 Recharge is presented as an appealing luxury PHEV that lets you sample electric-only driving while keeping a gasoline engine for longer trips, so it suits you if you want efficiency without giving up road-trip flexibility. The trade-offs are clear: acceleration and braking can be abrupt, rear-seat legroom is tight, and the value proposition is questionable.

Cons: Acceleration and braking can be abrupt, not smooth; tight rear-seat legroom; questionable value for the money.

With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 is framed as a well-engineered SUV that has improved over time, and the plug-in hybrid setup is described as a smart way to try EV-style driving without fully committing to a pure EV.

Its powertrain is presented as a strong point: the updated PHEV system delivers useful electric-only range, strong combined output, and the flexibility to run in Hybrid, Pure, Power, or Charge modes. The performance notes also suggest the drivetrain is capable and efficient when you use it the way it was intended.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that Volvo’s latest XC60 Recharge is a compelling blend of style, performance, and efficiency, and that a lease can be a good way to test EV living before buying. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying a premium for a luxury PHEV whose ownership costs may not match its appeal if you do not plug it in regularly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC60?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a plug-in hybrid where charging habits and maintenance history matter. Focus on how the cabin, brakes, and drivetrain feel in real-world driving, since the model’s strengths and weaknesses are tied closely to refinement and powertrain behavior.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes Core, Plus, Ultimate, and PHEV-only Polestar Engineered, with Bright or Dark exterior themes. The test vehicle’s Ultimate package added a more upscale cabin with features like a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, an air suspension, and a premium sound system, so base trims may feel less richly equipped.
• Powertrain: The XC60 Recharge uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with a rear electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery pack. It is described as producing 455 horsepower and 423 pound-feet of torque, with an estimated 35 miles of electric driving range.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation can help avoid collisions with oncoming traffic or unsafe left turns. The safety content also notes that the Ultimate trim came with all available safety features.
• Infotainment: A 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen runs Google Built-in with four years of complimentary access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. It supports Apple CarPlay, includes SiriusXM satellite radio and Wi-Fi access, and the system is paired with a 12-inch digital instrumentation panel.
• Fuel efficiency: The test route averaged 54.6 mpg, and the vehicle added 20 miles of battery range on a freeway-heavy trip while returning 19.7 mpg in Charge mode.

Which 2023 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 is offered in 4 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate, and Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point if you want the XC60’s style, technology, and safety focus without stretching to the pricier trims. It makes sense if you care most about getting into the lineup at the lowest cost.
• Plus: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it should give you a stronger balance of equipment and price than the base trim. If you want a more satisfying daily driver without chasing the top-end extras, this is the trim to target.
• Ultimate: This is the trim to buy if you want the most upscale XC60 experience, including the richest cabin presentation and the fullest safety equipment described here. It suits you if comfort, tech, and premium feel matter more than price.
• Polestar Engineered: Choose this only if you want the most performance-focused version in the lineup. It is the trim for buyers who care most about the sportiest character rather than value.

The safety package note is simple: the Ultimate trim came with all of the XC60’s available safety features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC60?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,295 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,076, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $33,076 sits slightly below last year's $36,859.

That decline suggests the XC60 has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means sellers may face more pricing pressure than they did a year ago. If you own one, strong condition and a clean history matter more because the market is already leaning downward. For future resale, a well-kept example should still hold appeal thanks to the model’s style, safety, and technology, but you should not expect a strong premium if the vehicle shows wear or lacks desirable equipment.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge has not been assessed by NHTSA, while the XC60 B5 and B6 earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Pilot Assist is Volvo’s most advanced driver-assistance system, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability on the highway, and Oncoming Lane Mitigation can help prevent collisions with oncoming traffic or unsafe left turns. The safety content also notes that the Ultimate trim came with all available safety features, so lower trims may not be as comprehensively equipped.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
• The updated plug-in hybrid setup gives you a useful mix of electric-only driving and gasoline backup.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,014, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $33,076 average.
• It is described as a stylish, well-engineered luxury crossover with notable updates and standard advanced safety features.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the stronger market mix of softened prices, solid inventory, and the updated PHEV appeal. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play and still keeps the XC60’s core strengths intact.
