CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Sequoia
overall

Summary
With 853 currently listed for sale and an average price of $62,066.00, 34.8% of 2023 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Sequoia 3.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
91.7% of 2023 Sequoia models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia stands out because a redesign turns it into a technologically advanced full-size SUV while giving it interior space more like a midsize SUV. It is also described as a benefactor of a long-overdue redesign and as improved in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a modernized large SUV with a more compact-feeling cabin layout.
One of the Sequoia’s defining traits is that it is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, yet it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. The result is a vehicle with a powerful engine, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the tradeoff is clear: the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, cargo space is not much, and ride quality is poor.
For shoppers, that means the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is distinctive less for maximum space than for how it reworks the full-size SUV formula. It offers the presence and capability buyers expect from the segment, but its packaging makes it feel more like a midsize crossover inside, which will be a strength for some and a limitation for others.

I compared the Capstone Sequoia to the GMC Yukon Denali. I think I could be happy with either one, but I will choose the Toyota because I like that the chassis comes from the Tundra truck so it is a proven and stiff frame. I also like the power outlets for 120 Vac & 12 Vdc.

The 2023 Toyota Sequioa is an SUV worth owning. Its huge, its luxurious and strong. However, I have two issues with the SUV... 1. The SUV is highly unaffordable. The price is more than $100,000 for some of the models and even the said cheaper ones are nowhere within reach at the dealerships. 2. Also, prior to its production, the 2023 Sequioa was advertised as having CAPTAIN chairs for the most part. I was disappointed to know that the ones with CAPTAIN chairs cost way more than the ones without it.

Got a chance to ride in a limited yesterday. I have owned Sequoias since 2007, we buy them for the room, quietness and solidness. The 2023 Limited that I drove was surprisingly a little bit sloppy on the ride. It has the punch of a turbo which was fun. The high end interior felt a little cheap, 3rd row space has evaporated and you now have to decide to take people or luggage, no longer both. Beautiful vehicle which it was better.

I drive a 2016 Sequoia,. I love the way it works for our large family! When I saw the new looks I was excited! I finally got to test drive one last week and was really disappointed. It no longer has the spacious interior that works for a large family. I’d say anyone. Over 5”6 in height will start to be too big for the back seats. My kids hated it in the back and begged me not to buy it. I wish they could have updated the look - and kept the functionality that families have loved for decades. The positives are that It handles well, is better on gas, is really great to look at and has great features. But the new ones no longer have space in the back for taller kids and all your stuff.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Sequoia cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $62,071 |
| Year-Round Low | $62,066.99 |
| Year-Round High | $67,056.93 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $67,053 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.43% |
Prices have softened 7.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 845 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare trims and conditions. If you find a listing below $62,066.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
With a 3.75/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia looks like a strong fit if you want a modernized full-size SUV and can live with its packaging compromises.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
It pairs a redesigned cabin and easy-to-use technology with a standard hybrid powertrain, and the overall concept is aimed at buyers who want full-size SUV presence without a traditional truck-like interior layout. The trade-offs are just as clear: the third row is best for kids, cargo space is limited, and ride quality is poor.
The market still shows 29.5% good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is built around a new hybrid setup and a redesigned platform, so it feels more modern than the outgoing model.
Its powertrain is described as robust, with strong horsepower and torque, and the hybrid system also improves fuel economy versus the previous generation. The expert notes also point to a powertrain that delivers improved straight-line hustle, which is a good sign for everyday durability under load.
Toyota also includes a first scheduled maintenance visit on the house, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a newer, more complex hybrid full-size SUV can be more expensive to keep if you buy one that has been neglected or heavily used for towing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report, verify service records, and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the SUV has been used for towing or off-road driving. Pay close attention to tire wear, brake condition, suspension behavior, and any signs that the hybrid system or driver-assistance tech has been stressed.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 gets the smaller 8-inch touchscreen, while higher versions move to the larger 14-inch display and more upscale interior presentation. The Capstone trim adds a more luxurious cabin treatment, but some materials still remind you this SUV is truck-based.
- Powertrain: The standard hybrid setup combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, a 10-speed automatic, a 36-kilowatt electric motor/generator, and a 1.87 kilowatt-hour nickel-metal hydride battery pack. It makes 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, and EPA ratings are 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking are also standard.
- Infotainment: The base SR5 gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while other versions get a 14-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system supports over-the-air-style connected services through Toyota’s connected features.
- Fuel efficiency: Official EPA ratings are 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD.
Which 2023 Toyota Sequoia trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is offered in 5 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core hybrid powertrain, standard safety tech, and the Sequoia’s basic capability. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the smaller 8-inch touchscreen.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want a more complete experience without jumping to the top end. It pairs the Sequoia’s standard strengths with a better-equipped feel and is also one of the trims that can be fitted with the TRD Off-Road Package.
- Platinum: This trim adds more premium equipment and is the point where the digital rearview mirror becomes standard. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without going all the way to Capstone.
- TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused version. It is the trim to consider for added capability, though the review still notes that the Sequoia’s rough-road geometry is not as strong as the previous generation’s.
- Capstone: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the 14-inch infotainment screen, upscale interior materials, and the most premium presentation. It is the right pick if you want the most richly appointed Sequoia and are willing to pay for it.
Every 2023 Sequoia includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, so you do not need to move up a trim to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 845 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $62,066.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $62,071 sits slightly below last year's $67,053.
That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the Sequoia easier to purchase now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means you should expect some depreciation pressure if you buy at today’s average and try to resell soon. The good news is that the current pricing trend may help you avoid overpaying, especially if you find a clean example near the low end of the range.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia safe?
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every driver-assistance feature available for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is standard equipment, bundled into Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. That suite includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition.
It also includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect emergency assistance and automatic collision notification, plus front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking. The expert review notes that the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist make highway driving easier, though the lane-departure warning can be irritating.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.43% compared with last year.
- It brings a redesigned cabin, standard hybrid power, and modern tech to the Sequoia lineup.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It keeps the older, more traditional full-size SUV formula with more cargo space.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $66,988, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $62,071 average.
- It adds the same hybrid formula with a more broadly well-received update.
The bottom line: If you want the most modern Sequoia and can accept the tighter interior packaging, the 2023 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is value, the current-year pricing and deal availability make this a smart time to shop carefully. If you need more space above all else, you should also compare it against other years before committing.
