Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still has a clear purpose. It is described as an oldie but a goodie when chosen for specific uses, and its rough-and-tumble character has aged gracefully despite the fact that Toyota last redesigned it 13 years ago. That long-running formula gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a vehicle with a classic SUV feel rather than a more modern crossover approach.
Toyota has also kept the 2023 4Runner relevant with updated equipment and special trims. The model’s technology is said to be kept at minimum standards, and it gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition, which adds some extra distinction for shoppers who want something less ordinary.
At the same time, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is not trying to hide its compromises. Its strengths include off-road fun, a spacious cabin, and easy-to-use technology, but it also carries unimpressive safety ratings, poor fuel economy, and poor on-road handling. That mix makes it appealing to buyers who value durability and capability more than refinement.

The Toyota 4Runner is just about perfect! The third row is an added bonus when needed. The additional safety features on the 2023 is definitely a plus for a teen driver.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and performance, and many also value the way it holds its value over time. The traditional SUV feel comes through clearly, which fits if you want something rugged rather than crossover-like.
The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy and on-road behavior that can feel less polished than newer rivals. That makes it a better fit if you prioritize capability and character over everyday refinement.
With 34.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, and it also suggests the 4Runner is the kind of SUV people feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing a reputation for legendary reliability and durability.
It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about dependability and more about higher running costs, especially fuel use and age-related wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has seen off-road use. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the truck has been maintained consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. Base versions are more stripped down, while higher trims add more distinctive styling and equipment.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 17 mpg in combined driving.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The largest touchscreen is 8 inches. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA fuel economy rating is 17 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 16.9 mpg.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $44,537 sits slightly below last year's $45,378.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and trim desirability than on broad market momentum.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The main caution is that the crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, so safety-conscious used buyers should weigh that carefully.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert across the lineup.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $40,076, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,537 average.
- It offers the same rugged, adventure-ready 4Runner formula with strong off-road focus.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,591, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,537 average.
- It keeps the same durability-first approach while remaining aimed at off-road buyers.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year inventory, updated standard safety equipment, and strong owner satisfaction, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If price matters most, the 2022 is the value play, while the 2024 only makes sense if you specifically want to pay more for a newer model year.
