Why it stands out
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner arrives as a long-awaited redesign that keeps the formula familiar while adding more capability, power, comfort, and technology. It is also described as more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement, while still remaining a solid all-terrain vehicle for extending adventures further.
What stands out most is that Toyota did not throw out the formula with this newly redesigned 4Runner. Instead, the 2025 model keeps many of the features shoppers have liked for over a decade and adds a more contemporary selection of four-cylinder powertrains. Its stylish design and excellent off-road abilities are clear strengths, and its relatively fuel-efficient nature adds to its appeal for buyers who want a rugged SUV that is easier to live with day to day.
There are still tradeoffs, though. The main drawback called out is limited rear-seat space, so shoppers who prioritize passenger room may want to take that into account. Even so, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s mix of updated technology, improved efficiency, and proven all-terrain capability makes it distinctive in a way that stays true to its identity.

Reviewed a 2025 Toyota SR5 4WD on Apr 5, 2025
In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $51,755 |
| Year-Round Low | $48,818.98 |
| Year-Round High | $55,275.77 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $55,280 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.38% |
Prices have softened 6.38% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,023 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $48,818.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
The 2025 4Runner keeps the familiar rugged SUV formula while adding more capability, power, comfort, and technology. It is also more composed on pavement and more efficient than before, while still staying true to its all-terrain mission.
The main trade-off is limited rear-seat space, and the powertrains can sound less inspiring when pushed.
For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a rugged SUV that is easier to live with day to day, especially if off-road ability matters more than passenger-room generosity.
33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2025 4Runner is presented as a continuation of Toyota’s durable, capability-first formula, with the redesign adding comfort and technology without abandoning its rugged identity. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that it remains a solid all-terrain vehicle and a more refined daily driver than the previous generation.
Its standard turbocharged four-cylinder is described as more powerful than the previous V6, and the hybrid adds stronger low-speed usable power, which is especially helpful off-road. The new setup is also quieter inside, which should help reduce fatigue on longer drives.
The hybrid’s added capability comes with a higher purchase price, so long-term ownership costs may depend on how much value you place on the extra power and efficiency.
What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the specific truck you’re considering has a clean record and consistent maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you plan to use it off-road, since trail use can leave wear that is not obvious in photos. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and signs of hard use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes a more basic 8-inch touchscreen, while the larger 14-inch screen is available on higher trims. Some convenience and tech features are not standard across the lineup.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, plus an available hybrid with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. The hybrid is the stronger choice for low-speed power and off-road use.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard and includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is optional.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard on supporting trims, while a 14-inch screen is available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered, along with a wireless charging pad and a digital instrument panel on hybrid variants.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is estimated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The hybrid is estimated at 23/24/23.
Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 9 trim levels: SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and other trims explicitly referenced in the model information.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The entry setup is the most basic way into the lineup, with the smaller 8-inch touchscreen and fewer convenience features than higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: A mid-range off-road trim makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core capability without paying for the most expensive adventure hardware.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro and Trailhunter bring the most capability and the richest adventure-focused equipment, along with the strongest off-road hardware.
- Off-road trim: The Trailhunter’s snorkel can add wind noise on road trips, so it is best if you prioritize trail use over quiet commuting.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts remains optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

- Inventory: There are 3,023 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 95.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $48,818.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $51,755 sits slightly below last year's $55,280.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a stronger prior-year level, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, trim desirability, and how well the vehicle holds buyer interest over time.
Because the 4Runner still has strong appeal as a rugged, capable SUV, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less distinctive alternatives. If you buy smart and keep mileage and condition in check, you should have a better shot at preserving value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams. It also includes Proactive Driving Assist, though that system could be too intrusive for many drivers. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is optional.
Crash test results are not yet available for this model year, so you should pay close attention to the standard driver-assistance equipment on the trim you choose.
Should I buy a 2025 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2025 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings more capability, power, comfort, and technology in a long-awaited redesign.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,667, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $51,755 average.
- It remains a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong durability.
Consider the 2026 if:
- It adds a more modern feature set and stronger powertrain choices.
- It blends rugged capability with everyday convenience more fully.
The bottom line: If you want the newest redesign with better refinement, efficiency, and tech, the 2025 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 is the value play, while the 2026 is the better choice if you want the next step forward in tech and convenience.
