CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,355 currently listed for sale and an average price of $44,447, 33.8% of 2023 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
86.5% of 2023 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still makes sense for specific buyers. It has been 13 years since Toyota last redesigned it, yet it is described as aging gracefully in most ways. Toyota has also kept its technology up to minimum standards and used new trim levels and special editions to keep interest alive. For 2023, it gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and it is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
What makes the 2023 Toyota 4Runner appealing is its mix of rugged character and everyday usability. It is fun to drive off-road, spacious, and easy to use when it comes to technology. Owners also praise its reliability, comfort, strong performance, and spacious third row. At the same time, it is not the best choice for everyone, since its safety ratings are unimpressive, its fuel economy is poor, and its on-road handling is also poor.

The Toyota 4Runner is just about perfect! The third row is an added bonus when needed. The additional safety features on the 2023 is definitely a plus for a teen driver.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $44,377 |
| Year-Round Low | $41,413 |
| Year-Round High | $45,004 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $44,847 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.05% |
Prices have softened 1.05% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,360 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating and 7/10 expert rating point to a model that resonates strongly with owners and still earns solid marks from our testers. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, strong performance, and spacious third row. They also like the interior layout and features, and many describe it as a solid family choice.
The trade-offs are clear: it is not the best pick if you care most about fuel efficiency or polished on-road behavior. The overview also frames it as a better fit if you value rugged character and everyday usability over modern refinement.
Only 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than deeply discounted.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership as recurring positives, which is exactly what you want to see in a used SUV with this kind of reputation.
The expert review reinforces that impression by describing the 4Runner as having a reputation for legendary reliability and feeling indestructible. It also notes free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about living with an aging platform, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use, and pay close attention to wear items, suspension condition, and signs of hard use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base trims are more straightforward, while the 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds retro styling, bronze accents, and standard 4WD on the SR5 Premium foundation.
- Powertrain: Every 2023 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is rated at 17 mpg in combined driving, and 4WD versions add more off-road hardware.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The largest touchscreen is 8 inches. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability are available, along with navigation and a JBL premium audio upgrade.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner is rated at 17 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes 16.9 mpg in testing.
Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra equipment. It makes sense if you mainly want the traditional body-on-frame SUV experience and can live with the simpler setup.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-focused version of the 4Runner. The expert review says it gets a suspension designed to improve on-road athleticism.
- SR5 Premium: This is the best-value starting point for shoppers who want a nicer cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder. It also serves as the base for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
- TRD Off-Road: Pick this if off-road capability matters most. The review says its suspension improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the right move if you want the off-road hardware plus a more upscale feature set.
- 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is for you if you want the most distinctive styling. It adds retro stripes, bronze wheels and badges, special stitching, and a numbered plaque, but it is limited to specific paint and interior combinations.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more comfort-oriented version. The review notes that it offers a suspension designed to improve on-road athleticism and can be had with full-time 4WD.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice if you want the most aggressive off-road tuning. The review says its suspension is tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop, but the best listings still deserve quick attention.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,360 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.05% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $41,413, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $44,377 sits slightly below last year's $44,847.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time.
If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position when it is time to resell. Models with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level this year.
The main caveat is that the crash-test results are unimpressive for a modern SUV, so safety-conscious shoppers should weigh that carefully against the 4Runner’s strengths elsewhere.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,601, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,377 average.
- It emphasizes rugged capability with easy-to-use tech and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,820, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,377 average.
- It keeps the 4Runner’s off-road strength while adding improved ride quality and more modern convenience touches.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and updated safety equipment, the 2023 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 can save you money while keeping the same basic formula. If you are willing to pay more for a newer example, the 2024 is the better path.
