CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 7,148 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,028, 33.8% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
82.8% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as a comfortable, easy-to-use choice in a shrinking segment. It is one of the last midsize models still standing, which gives it added relevance for buyers who want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. Its strengths are straightforward: the Altima is comfortable, its technology is easy to use, and it earns great safety ratings.
That appeal comes with some tradeoffs. The 2023 Altima’s performance is fairly pedestrian, its visibility is poor, and its interior materials feel cheap. Even so, it can still make sense for shoppers who value a relaxed driving experience and practical everyday usability over excitement.
Owners also tend to praise its impressive fuel economy, with reports averaging around 40 mpg, and many like its responsive driving feel and quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which can make its tech feel a little less complete than they would like.

Reviewed a 2023 Nissan Altima on Jul 27, 2023
We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

How much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,991 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,548 |
| Year-Round High | $21,454 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,799 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.92% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
With 7,082 listings available, you have a fairly broad pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its impressive fuel economy, responsive driving experience, and quality audio system. The Altima also fits well if you want a comfortable, easy-to-use sedan in a shrinking midsize segment, especially if you value a traditional car over an SUV.
The trade-offs are clear: the performance is fairly pedestrian, the visibility is poor, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, it can still make sense if you want relaxed daily driving and straightforward usability more than excitement.
Good and great deals account for 33.0% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as cost-effective thanks to its impressive fuel economy, and they highlight a responsive driving experience that feels dependable in everyday use. The expert evaluation also notes that Nissan has been building its CVTs for decades, and that the Altima’s transmission does a decent job of mimicking a traditional automatic.
Nissan does not add much in the way of ownership perks here, so long-term value depends more on how well the car has been maintained than on any built-in maintenance advantage. For used buyers, that makes a clean service history especially important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on visibility-related wear, suspension comfort, and interior condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day experience. If you’re comparing trims, pay close attention to which features are standard versus optional so you don’t overpay for equipment you expected to be included.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is the most stripped-down version, while the SV, SR, SL, and SR VC-Turbo add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim lacks many things you’re likely to want, so the SV is the practical step-up if you want a better-balanced used Altima.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT, while the SR VC-Turbo gets a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. AWD is available only with the standard engine on SV, SR, and SL trims.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and automatic high beams are added on SR.
- Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 5-inch display with Bluetooth streaming audio and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR move to an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, while the available 12.3-inch touchscreen adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Official combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg depending on wheel size and drivetrain, and the SR VC-Turbo is rated at 29 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the cheapest way into the Altima, but it is also the most basic. You get the essentials, yet the limited infotainment setup and sparse equipment make it the least appealing choice for most used buyers.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment gap-filling features the base car lacks while staying well below the luxury-oriented upper trims.
- SR: Choose this if you want a sportier feel and more equipment, including the added driver-focused touches that make it more engaging than the SV.
- SL: This is the most luxurious standard-engine trim, with the richest feature set and the most upscale presentation. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than price.
- SR VC-Turbo: Pick this only if you want the most powerful Altima and are willing to pay for it. It is the performance-oriented choice in the lineup.
ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, so those trims are the ones to target if you want the full driver-assistance setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,082 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,548, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $20,991 sits slightly above last year's $20,799.
That small increase suggests the Altima has held its value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability can be helpful because it points to a market that is still willing to pay consistent money for the car.
The model’s broad appeal as a comfortable, easy-to-use sedan should help keep demand steady, especially among shoppers who still want a traditional midsize car. Strong fuel economy and a good reputation with owners can also support resale confidence over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Nissan Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year. It also earns five-star rollover resistance ratings, but it receives four-star ratings in front passenger frontal impact safety.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, adding adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist.
One important caveat is the updated IIHS side-impact result, where the Altima receives a Poor rating. That is worth weighing carefully if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds updated styling and a stronger available infotainment setup.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,743, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $20,991 average.
- It offers more trim and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,019, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $20,991 average.
- It adds a more settled, value-focused update with strong standard safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this sedan’s formula, the 2023 is the right target. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 is worth a look if you want a slightly newer alternative at a lower average price.
