CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 7,404 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,349.00, 34.3% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
84.5% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as one of the remaining choices in a shrinking segment. That alone gives it a certain relevance for shoppers who still want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. It also brings a comfortable ride, easy-to-use technology, and great safety ratings, which are all strong reasons to consider it.
At the same time, the Altima is not trying to win on excitement. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and poor visibility is one of its drawbacks. The interior materials also feel cheap, which may matter to buyers who expect a more polished cabin. Even so, the 2023 Nissan Altima can still appeal to practical shoppers who value comfort, straightforward tech, and efficiency over flash.
Owners also praise its impressive fuel economy, averaging around 40 mpg, along with a responsive driving experience and a quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which slightly weakens its technology appeal.

Reviewed a 2023 Nissan Altima on Jul 27, 2023
We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

2023 Nissan Altima Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2023 Nissan Altima prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,364 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,552.39 |
| Year-Round High | $21,505.80 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,028 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.60% |
Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 7,462 listings available, which suggests healthy inventory for shoppers comparing options. If you find a listing below $19,552.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Altima for its impressive fuel economy, comfortable daily-driving character, and quality audio system. The cabin also gets credit for being a practical, easy-to-live-with space, and the car’s safety reputation helps reinforce its appeal.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is only adequate, and visibility can be a problem. The overview frames it as a comfortable family sedan, which fits the Altima’s strengths better than any expectation of sporty driving.
With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, cost-effective, and easy to count on for everyday use. The expert evaluation also describes Nissan’s CVT as one of the better examples of the type, and notes that the brand has been building them for decades.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is tied to how well the car was cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a proper inspection. Focus on tire wear, brake condition, interior wear, and any signs that the car has been used hard or repaired poorly. If possible, prioritize a test drive that includes highway speeds and rough pavement so you can judge noise, ride quality, and visibility for yourself.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim lacks many features you’re likely to want, and the upgrade to the SV is close to a requirement. Higher trims add more visual presence, but the SL’s standard wheel design can be vulnerable to curb rash.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT. FWD models make 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while AWD models make 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet. EPA combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg, and the turbocharged version is more powerful with an EPA estimate of 29 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Starting with SV, you also get rear automatic braking, while SR adds automatic high-beam headlights. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist on higher trims.
- Infotainment: The base S trim has only a 5-inch display, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR get an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, while the available 12.3-inch system adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Official EPA combined ratings range from 30 mpg to 32 mpg depending on wheel size and drivetrain. The turbocharged version is rated at 29 mpg combined, and the SL AWD test vehicle averaged 27.4 mpg.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: Altima S, Altima SV, Altima SR, Altima SL, Altima SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Altima S is the least compelling choice because it lacks many of the features you’re likely to want, and its infotainment setup is limited to a 5-inch display with basic connectivity.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Altima SV is the best value pick because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and access to more available safety and tech upgrades.
- Premium/top trim: The Altima SL is the most luxurious standard trim, adding the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Bose audio, ProPilot Assist, and a surround-view camera system.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable here.
ProPilot Assist is standard on the SL and SR VC-Turbo, and optional on the SV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,462 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 83.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,552.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $21,364 sits slightly above last year's $21,028.
That modest increase suggests the Altima has held value reasonably well in the near term. For a future seller, that kind of price movement can help support confidence that demand is still present, especially when inventory remains active and the model continues to attract value-focused shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though front passenger frontal impact safety is rated four-star. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year, but the updated IIHS side-impact test gives it a Poor rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every version and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist, and it is standard on the SL and SR VC-Turbo.
The main caveat is the Poor updated IIHS side-impact result, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority. Visibility is also a recurring concern, so the surround-view camera on higher trims can be especially helpful.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.60% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 update brings revised styling, a larger available touchscreen, and stronger tech appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $18,035, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,364 average.
- It offers a broader powertrain mix and a sporty Midnight Edition option.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,324, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,364 average.
- It adds a larger touchscreen and improved safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated tech, strong safety equipment, and broad market availability, the 2023 is the right place to start. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the value play; if you want a slightly newer alternative with similar appeal, the 2024 is worth a look.
