CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 7,157 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,230.00, 33.4% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
82.4% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as one of the remaining choices in a shrinking segment. That alone gives it a certain relevance for shoppers who still want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. It also brings a comfortable ride, easy-to-use technology, and great safety ratings, which are all strong reasons to consider it.
At the same time, the Altima is not trying to win on excitement. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and poor visibility is one of its drawbacks. The interior materials also feel cheap, which may matter to buyers who expect a more polished cabin. Even so, the 2023 Nissan Altima can still appeal to practical shoppers who value comfort, straightforward tech, and efficiency over flash.
Owners also praise its impressive fuel economy, averaging around 40 mpg, along with a responsive driving experience and a quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which slightly weakens its technology appeal.

We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

How much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,170 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,554.06 |
| Year-Round High | $21,501.05 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,928 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.15% |
Prices are up 1.15% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
With 7,256 listings available, you have a fairly broad pool to compare before you commit. If you find a listing below $19,554.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, responsive driving experience, and quality audio system. The Altima also fits practical shoppers who want a comfortable ride and straightforward tech in a traditional sedan body. On the downside, the expert review points to fairly pedestrian performance and poor visibility, while the interior materials feel cheap. That makes it a better fit if you value comfort, efficiency, and ease of use more than excitement or cabin polish. In a shrinking midsize-sedan segment, it still offers a sensible alternative if you want a conventional family car rather than an SUV. With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free feel, with buyers highlighting strong fuel economy and a car they can count on for everyday use. The expert review reinforces that impression by describing Nissan’s CVT as one of the better examples of the type and noting that the automaker has been building them for decades. The cost-effectiveness notes also point out that the base trim lacks value-adding perks, so you may want to prioritize a better-equipped version if you plan to keep the car long term. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright reliability and more about choosing a trim that avoids feeling under-equipped.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings do not guarantee a clean past for every car you inspect. Put extra attention on visibility-related wear, interior condition, and how the car feels over rough pavement, since those are the areas most likely to affect daily satisfaction. A pre-purchase inspection is especially worthwhile if you are considering a higher-mileage example or a car with optional equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim has a 5-inch display and very limited tech, while SV and SR add an 8-inch touchscreen and more useful connectivity. The SL brings a more upscale look and feel, but the cabin still uses plenty of hard plastic, so you should judge whether the added equipment is worth the step up.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT, while the SR VC-Turbo gets a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. AWD is available only with the standard engine on SV, SR, and SL trims.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and automatic high beams are added on SR.
- Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 5-inch display, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR move to an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, while the available 12.3-inch system adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg depending on wheel size and drivetrain, and the turbocharged version is rated at 29 mpg combined. The expert review also notes that the SL AWD test vehicle averaged 27.4 mpg.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: Altima S, Altima SV, Altima SR, Altima SL, Altima SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Altima S: This is the entry point, but it is the least compelling choice because the tech is basic and the equipment list is thin. It makes sense only if your budget is tight and you are willing to give up a lot of convenience features.
- Altima SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the more useful 8-inch touchscreen and opens the door to more available equipment. It is the trim most likely to balance price, comfort, and everyday usability.
- Altima SR: Choose this if you want a sportier feel and a little more visual presence, plus the added convenience of automatic high beams. It is a good fit if you want more personality without jumping to the top of the range.
- Altima SL: This is the most luxurious standard-engine trim, with the available 12.3-inch infotainment system, Bose audio, and ProPilot Assist standard. It suits you if you want the most comfort and tech in the regular lineup.
- Altima SR VC-Turbo: Pick this if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale equipment together. It is the enthusiast-leaning choice, but it is also the most expensive.
ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?

- Inventory: There are 7,256 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.15% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 82.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,554.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $21,170 sits slightly above last year's $20,928.
That modest increase suggests the Altima has held value reasonably well in the near term, even as the midsize-sedan segment continues to shrink. For a future seller, that kind of steady pricing can help support demand, especially if your car has desirable equipment and a clean history. The market also appears to reward well-kept examples, which means condition and trim choice should matter when you eventually resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though it gets four-star ratings in front passenger frontal impact safety. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year, but the updated IIHS side-impact test gives it a Poor rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every version and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. Rear automatic braking starts with SV, and automatic high beams are added on SR. ProPilot Assist is optional on SV and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, adding adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist for highway driving. The main caveat is the Poor IIHS side-impact result, so you should weigh that carefully if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.15% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds updated styling, a better available touchscreen, and strong standard safety tech.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,938, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,170 average.
- It offers broad trim and drivetrain choice.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,145, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,170 average.
- It keeps the sedan relevant with easy-to-use tech and strong standard safety equipment.
The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the latest version of this sedan’s tech and safety mix while still shopping a shrinking segment. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 is the safer alternative if you want a slightly newer model at a lower average price.
