CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 7,635 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,348.00, 33.3% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
83.5% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as one of the remaining choices in a shrinking segment. That alone gives it a certain relevance for shoppers who still want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. It also brings a comfortable ride, easy-to-use technology, and great safety ratings, which are all strong reasons to consider it.
At the same time, the Altima is not trying to win on excitement. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and poor visibility is one of its drawbacks. The interior materials also feel cheap, which may matter to buyers who expect a more polished cabin. Even so, the 2023 Nissan Altima can still appeal to practical shoppers who value comfort, straightforward tech, and efficiency over flash.
Owners also praise its impressive fuel economy, averaging around 40 mpg, along with a responsive driving experience and a quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which slightly weakens its technology appeal.

Reviewed a 2023 Nissan Altima on Jul 27, 2023
We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

2023 Nissan Altima Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2023 Nissan Altima prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,348 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,554.26 |
| Year-Round High | $21,509.41 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,037 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.48% |
Prices are up 1.48% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 7,609 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $19,554.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating, and its expert rating is 6.33/10. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Altima’s fuel economy, with many calling it cost-effective for daily driving. They also highlight the responsive driving feel and quality audio system, while some appreciate the car’s wireless connectivity options.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is a weak point compared with rivals, and some owners wish the tech experience were even better. In practical terms, the Altima makes the most sense if you want a comfortable, tech-forward family sedan rather than a sporty one. Deal availability is still healthy, with 33.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with language that emphasizes confidence over the long term.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by noting that Nissan has been building its CVTs for decades and that the Altima’s transmission does a decent job of mimicking a traditional automatic. That said, used buyers should still focus on maintenance records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is always lower when the car has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, even when the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on visibility-related wear, brake condition, and how the car drives over rough pavement. It also helps to compare trim equipment closely, since the base version leaves out a lot of desirable content.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is light on equipment, and the SV is the point where the Altima starts to feel more complete. Higher trims add more visual polish, including larger wheels and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT. Front-wheel-drive models make 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while AWD versions make 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The turbocharged SR VC-Turbo is the livelier choice.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist, but it is not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: The base trim gets a 5-inch display, while SV and SR move to an 8-inch touchscreen. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on SV and SR and standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and OTA-connected services capability through NissanConnect Services.
- Fuel efficiency: Official EPA combined fuel economy ranges from 30 mpg to 32 mpg, and the turbocharged version is rated at 29 mpg combined. The test vehicle averaged 27.4 mpg.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim lacks the modern infotainment setup many shoppers expect, and it also misses some of the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SV is the best value pick because it adds the more useful equipment shoppers are likely to want without pushing the price into luxury-trim territory.
- Premium/top trim: The SL is the most luxurious choice, with the larger touchscreen, premium audio, and added driver-assistance tech.
- Off-road trim: The SR VC-Turbo is the performance-oriented choice, but it is not the best fit if you want the most relaxed everyday sedan.
ProPilot Assist is standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo, and available on SV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

If you find a listing below $19,554.26, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $21,348 sits slightly above last year's $21,037.
That modest increase suggests the Altima has held value reasonably well in a shrinking sedan market. If prices continue to rise, sellers may benefit from steady demand rather than dramatic appreciation. For you as a future seller, the key advantage is that the model’s broad appeal and strong shopper interest can help support pricing when it’s time to list.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though it receives four-star ratings for front passenger frontal impact safety. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS for the 2022 calendar year, but the updated IIHS side-impact test gives it a Poor rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every version and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist, and it becomes standard on SL and SR VC-Turbo.
The main caveat is the poor updated IIHS side-impact result, so you should pay close attention to crash protection and visibility-related features when comparing trims.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.48% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 update brings revised styling, a larger available touchscreen, and strong standard safety tech.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $18,097, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,348 average.
- It offers broad trim and powertrain choice.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,383, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,348 average.
- It adds a larger touchscreen and improved safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current features, safety, and shopping inventory, the 2023 is the better primary target. If price matters most, the 2022 is the value play, while the 2024 is worth a look if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can find one near the right price.
