CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 6,973 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,083.00, 33.2% of 2023 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Nissan Altima 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
82.7% of 2023 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Among midsize family sedans, the 2023 Nissan Altima stands out as one of the remaining choices in a shrinking segment. That alone gives it a certain relevance for shoppers who still want a traditional sedan rather than an SUV. It also brings a comfortable ride, easy-to-use technology, and great safety ratings, which are all strong reasons to consider it.
At the same time, the Altima is not trying to win on excitement. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and poor visibility is one of its drawbacks. The interior materials also feel cheap, which may matter to buyers who expect a more polished cabin. Even so, the 2023 Nissan Altima can still appeal to practical shoppers who value comfort, straightforward tech, and efficiency over flash.
Owners also praise its impressive fuel economy, averaging around 40 mpg, along with a responsive driving experience and a quality audio system. Some, however, miss wireless connectivity options, which slightly weakens its technology appeal.

We have had our 2023 Nissan Altima SV for about 1 month and have driven just under 1,500 miles. We purchased this car because of the mpg ratings. We are averaging over 40 mpg so far which means I am enjoying this car. The driving is responsive, the pickup is quick, but not as smooth or powerful as the 2023 Honda Accord with its turbo boost. The audio is great, and even without the added technology package I have enjoyed the seamless Bluetooth pairing. Trunk space has been enough, though a bit less than the 2023 Honda Accord. Wireless Android Auto would have been a nice feature without the technology package, but the ability to plug in works, and I cannot complain with how well it works. This model came with a power drivers seat that low-end models of the Accord did not offer. I think the car is a great value when compared to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry if you are looking for updated technology, great gas mileage, and a lower price to get driving.

How much does the 2023 Nissan Altima cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,044 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,551.88 |
| Year-Round High | $21,455.94 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,864 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.86% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
With 7,198 listings available, you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions. If you find a listing below $19,551.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Nissan Altima earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, comfortable ride, and quality audio system. The Altima also fits practical shoppers who want easy-to-use technology and a traditional sedan in a shrinking segment. On the downside, the expert review points to fairly pedestrian performance and poor visibility, while the interior materials feel cheap. That makes it a better fit if you value comfort, straightforward tech, and efficiency over excitement. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities in the market if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, cost-effective car that feels dependable over time, with praise for its trouble-free feel and strong fuel economy. The expert review reinforces that impression by noting Nissan’s long experience with the CVT and describing it as a good one that does a decent job of mimicking a traditional automatic. Nissan also includes a helpful Easy Fill Tire Alert, and the standard safety suite adds everyday peace of mind. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car was maintained well and kept in good condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a proper inspection. Pay close attention to visibility-related wear, wheel condition, and any signs that the car has been used hard on rough roads. A test drive should also confirm that the ride, brakes, and driver-assistance systems behave smoothly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is light on equipment, while SV, SR, and SL bring more of the features most shoppers will want. The SL is the most luxurious, and the SR VC-Turbo adds the more powerful turbocharged engine.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a CVT, while the SR VC-Turbo gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with more power. AWD is available only with the standard engine on SV, SR, and SL trims.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist on higher trims.
- Infotainment: The base S trim has a 5-inch display, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. SV and SR get an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, while the available 12.3-inch system adds wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless smartphone charging.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated from 30 mpg to 32 mpg in combined driving, depending on wheel size and drivetrain. The SR VC-Turbo is rated at 29 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2023 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2023 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and SR VC-Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it is very bare-bones and lacks many features you are likely to want. It makes sense only if price is your absolute priority.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the equipment gap-filling features the base car misses, while keeping the Altima’s core comfort and efficiency intact.
- SR: Choose this if you want a sportier feel and more engaging equipment, including paddle shifters and available upgrades that improve the cabin and tech experience.
- SL: This is the most luxurious trim, with the best mix of comfort, technology, and available driver-assistance features. It suits you if you want the most polished Altima experience.
- SR VC-Turbo: Pick this if you want the most power and a more lively driving experience, while still getting upscale equipment.
The safety package is strongest on SL and SR VC-Turbo, where ProPilot Assist and the surround-view camera system are included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Nissan Altima?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,198 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,551.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $21,044 sits slightly above last year's $20,864.
That modest increase suggests the Altima has held its value reasonably well in a shrinking sedan market. For a future seller, that kind of stability can help reduce the risk of a steep drop if you buy at the right price. It also means well-kept examples should remain easy to explain to shoppers who still want a practical sedan with strong safety and comfort appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Nissan Altima safe?
The 2023 Nissan Altima earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a five-star rollover resistance rating, though it gets four-star ratings for front passenger frontal impact safety.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every version and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver monitoring system. ProPilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centering assist on higher trims, while the SL and SR VC-Turbo also get a surround-view camera system. The expert review notes that ProPilot Assist works well overall but can feel abrupt and needs more refinement. It also flags an updated IIHS side-impact result of Poor, which is an important caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2023 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings updated styling, a stronger tech setup on higher trims, and a shrinking-segment sedan appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,836, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,044 average.
- It offers more trim and drivetrain flexibility.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,052, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,044 average.
- It adds a more current value-focused setup with strong standard safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this sedan with steady pricing and strong owner satisfaction, the 2023 is the cleanest choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 is the sensible alternative if you want a newer model year at a slightly lower average price.
