CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 1,323 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,650, 33.5% of 2023 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
84.4% of 2023 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag. It is presented as a small car that punches well above its weight, with an upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. For shoppers who have been focused on small SUVs, it also serves as a reminder that a compact car can still be highly practical for everyday life.
The hatchback version adds to that appeal with helpful cargo space and a rear liftgate, giving it SUV-like versatility in a smaller footprint. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view. That mix of polish, usefulness, and a few notable compromises is what makes the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 distinctive.

The car had all my desired features and more. This was a nicer trim that I originally set out for but the price point was cheaper than some of the other guys at a couple steps down!

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The overview frames it as a small car that delivers luxury-level comfort, refined performance, and everyday practicality, especially if you want hatchback versatility in a compact footprint. The expert notes reinforce that with upscale cabin quality, sharp handling, and strong acceleration.
The main trade-offs are the frustrating infotainment system and the large rear pillar that hurts rear visibility. Those drawbacks matter most if you prioritize easy tech use or maximum outward visibility over driving polish.
Good and great deals account for 35.1% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to a car that blends style, driving enjoyment, and an upscale feel, while the expert assessment emphasizes intrinsic value and strong driving character. The performance notes also describe a communicative, refined chassis that feels rewarding without being punishing.
That said, the tech and visibility compromises can affect day-to-day ownership satisfaction, especially if you spend a lot of time in traffic or tight parking situations. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is not mechanical drama so much as living with the car’s usability quirks every day.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a thorough inspection, especially if you’re considering a hatchback. Pay close attention to visibility-related wear, interior condition, and whether the tech interface works the way you expect during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter engine makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. A turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is also offered, and it delivers 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8.8 inches, and it is controlled by a rotary dial rather than touch input. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo system.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine with front-wheel drive returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

- Premium: This is the right pick if you want the richer cabin and convenience upgrades, including paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,657 sits slightly above last year's $21,829.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The combination of strong demand and a relatively tight price band can help support resale stability.
The car’s appeal to shoppers who want upscale feel and engaging driving dynamics should also help keep interest steady. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns strong safety marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, and it also scores well in our expert assessment.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The main caveat is the hatchback’s massive rear pillar, which creates a serious blind spot and can make rear visibility a real issue. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it takes extra attention to operate.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.79% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It pairs upscale comfort with refined handling and hatchback practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,369, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,657 average.
- It adds Carbon Edition style and updated Turbo equipment.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,565, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,657 average.
- It broadens the lineup with a more premium-feeling driving experience.
The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the strongest mix of style, driving enjoyment, and current-market availability. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 and 2024 both deserve a look because they sit below the current average while keeping the Mazda3’s core appeal intact.
