CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda CX-50
overall

Summary
With 109 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $26,453, 42.2% of 2023 Mazda CX-50s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-50 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 stands out as a stylish compact crossover that is meant to suit active lifestyles. It looks great and is fun to drive, which gives it a more engaging personality than many vehicles in this segment. Mazda also gives it standard advanced safety features, adding to its appeal for buyers who want a crossover that feels both attractive and well equipped.
Compared with Mazda’s other compact crossover, the 2023 CX-50 is positioned as the more adventure-oriented choice. It shares powertrains and underlying technology with the CX-5, but it is otherwise different, with slightly more rear-seat room and practical cargo space in a longer, lower, and wider design. That combination makes it appealing to shoppers who want a versatile SUV with a more distinctive shape and a bit more utility.
There are tradeoffs, though. The CX-50 lacks storage space, its infotainment system is unintuitive, and its value proposition can be challenging. Owner feedback also points to a stiff ride and hard seats, even as many drivers praise the quality interior and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine.

If you’re looking for great gas mileage with good cargo space and legroom, this is the vehicle for you. Gorgeous interior finishes with numerous options for enhancements and sharp exterior. We are having to order because of the super low inventory everywhere. We found the extra cost for the turbo engine to be worth it.

We were replacing a CX-50 we lost to a tree fall in a storm . We had only had the vehicle for about seven months and we knew we wanted the exact same car. We like the wide stance and roominess in a vehicle you can still park in a standard space with room to get in and out. It carries four tall people without being cramped. It’s practical and rugged and features a lot of the kind of comfort and luxury associated with higher priced cars. The technology is easy to use and enhances rather than distracting from the driver experience.

Ideal drivers commuter car that can handle family duty. Roomy back seat and cargo area, fun to drive, gas mileage is fine. Steering is stiffer than average but contributes to stability and less need for safety system intervention. Meridian edition is mostly trim and tires, but it looks cool and different.

How much does the 2023 Mazda CX-50 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,398 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,230 |
| Year-Round High | $27,966 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,964 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.60% |
Prices have softened 5.60% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,738 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.67/5, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the CX-50’s stylish design, quality interior, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. The review summary also points to a spacious cargo area and a sleek infotainment system as recurring positives.
On the trade-off side, the expert review calls out a stiff ride and hard seats, while owner feedback also notes that the non-turbo engine feels less effective. In practical terms, this is a crossover that fits you best if you want a more distinctive, active-lifestyle alternative to a conventional compact SUV.
With 35.8% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels stylish, quality-built, and strong-performing over time, with owners also describing the turbo engine positively. That kind of feedback matters when you’re trying to judge whether a used SUV will feel dependable after the first owner has put miles on it.
The expert review also notes that the turbo powertrain delivered reliable towing capability during testing, which supports confidence in the drivetrain’s durability. Mazda’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright failure and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its ride quality, comfort, and overall condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a vehicle-specific record. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, seats, and cabin condition, since owner feedback points to ride firmness and hard seating as common concerns. It also makes sense to test the infotainment interface yourself, because usability is one of the CX-50’s weaker points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5 S uses an 8.8-inch display, while other trim levels get a larger 10.25-inch display. The most expensive trim adds features that are not standard elsewhere, so base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to equipment gaps.
- Powertrain: The 2.5 S uses a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic, while the 2.5 Turbo adds stronger acceleration and more towing capacity.
- Safety package: Mazda’s driver-assistance suite is standard across the lineup, with Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera reserved for the top trim.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect includes wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services. The base 2.5 S has an 8.8-inch display, while other trims get a 10.25-inch screen.
- Fuel efficiency: Mazda expects the 2.5 S to return 27 mpg in combined driving, while the 2.5 Turbo is predicted to get 25 mpg combined and averaged 23.4 mpg in testing.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-50 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered in 10 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Preferred Plus, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition, 2.5 Turbo Premium, 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point if you want the CX-50’s styling, standard all-wheel drive, and core safety tech without paying for turbo power. It makes the most sense if you value the design and equipment more than acceleration.
- 2.5 S Select: This is the first step up from the base model and is the trim to watch if you want a better balance of features and price.
- 2.5 S Preferred: This trim should appeal if you want a more comfortable daily driver without jumping into the pricier turbo lineup.
- 2.5 S Preferred Plus: Choose this if you want a richer feature set while staying with the standard engine.
- 2.5 S Premium: This is a good fit if you want more upscale equipment and can live without the turbo’s extra punch.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete non-turbo package before moving into the higher-priced performance models.
- 2.5 Turbo: Pick this if stronger acceleration matters to you, along with the higher towing rating.
- 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition: This is the outdoorsy choice, with all-terrain tires, splash guards, and a roof-mounted load platform.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium: This is the right move if you want turbo power and a more premium feature set.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including the advanced safety and parking features that are not standard on lower trims.
The safety package is broadly standard, but the surround-view camera, parking sensors, and related upgrades are limited to the top trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,738 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.60% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,230, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-50's resale value?
The current average of $26,398 sits slightly below last year's $27,964.
That decline suggests the CX-50 has already moved through some early depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A softer market today can also mean you have less cushion if you overpay, so condition and trim matter more than ever.
If demand stays steady, the CX-50’s strong styling and owner satisfaction should help it remain appealing to used shoppers. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment are likely to hold value better than higher-mileage or poorly maintained ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 safe?
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 has not been crash tested by IIHS as this review was written.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda includes a generous standard package of driver-assistance systems, and the lineup gets Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera on the top trim. The main caveat is that the most useful upgrades are reserved for the most expensive version, so lower trims miss out on some of the best parking and low-speed assistance features.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-50 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 introduces the CX-50 as a more adventure-oriented alternative with standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $27,912, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $26,398 average.
- It leans more rugged and practical, with standard all-wheel drive and a more straightforward personality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2023 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year alternative with a more rugged-leaning personality, the 2024 is worth a look.
