Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-50 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its stylish design, quality interior, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. They also like the spacious cargo area and the sleek infotainment setup. On the downside, some owners mention a stiff ride, hard seats, and a less effective non-turbo engine.

The CX-50 fits you best if you want a crossover that leans into design, driving enjoyment, and everyday practicality rather than pure utility. Its 38.6% good-or-great deal share suggests there are still worthwhile listings to find.

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for quality, strong performance, and a generally trouble-free ownership experience. The turbo engine gets especially positive attention, and the overall tone suggests buyers feel confident about the CX-50 over time.

The expert drive notes also support that impression, describing the turbo powertrain as smooth and noting reliable towing capability. Mazda’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been maintained well and driven gently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the specific listing has no hidden damage or repair history. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a turbo model. Focus on ride quality, seat comfort, and infotainment usability during your test drive, since those are the areas most likely to affect daily satisfaction.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 S uses an 8.8-inch display, while other trims get a larger 10.25-inch screen. Higher trims also add more upscale equipment, and the top Premium Plus trim gets the most advanced convenience and driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: The 2.5 S uses a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic, while the 2.5 Turbo adds much stronger acceleration and higher towing capacity.
• Safety package: Mazda Connect includes standard driver-assistance systems across the lineup, while the CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus adds Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera.
• Infotainment: Every CX-50 gets wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Mazda Connected Services, and touchscreen capability for phone projection. The base trim uses an 8.8-inch display, and other trims get a 10.25-inch display.
• Fuel efficiency: Mazda expects the 2.5 S to return 27 mpg in combined driving, while the 2.5 Turbo is predicted to get 25 mpg combined; the turbo model averaged 23.4 mpg in testing.

Which 2023 Mazda CX-50 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered in 10 trim levels: 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 S Meridian Edition, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition, Meridian Edition.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S Select: This is the entry point if you want the CX-50’s style, standard all-wheel drive, and core safety and tech without stretching the budget. It makes sense if you value the design and daily usability more than luxury extras.
• 2.5 S Preferred: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and convenience without jumping into the pricier turbo models. If you want a well-rounded CX-50, this is the trim to start with.
• 2.5 S Premium: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for nicer amenities while staying with the efficient base engine.
• 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the most appealing non-turbo trim if you want the fullest feature set without moving to the performance-oriented models.
• 2.5 S Meridian Edition: Pick this if you want the more adventurous look and the added outdoor-oriented equipment described for the Meridian Edition.
• 2.5 Turbo: This is the right move if you want stronger acceleration and more towing capability, and you’re comfortable paying more for it.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium: A good fit if you want the turbo engine plus a more premium equipment mix.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the most complete CX-50 in the lineup, with the most advanced safety and convenience features, including the surround-view camera and parking sensors.
• 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition: Choose this if you want the turbo powertrain with the Meridian Edition’s more rugged character.
• Meridian Edition: This version is aimed at buyers who want the most outdoorsy presentation, including exclusive wheels, all-terrain tires, splash guards, and a roof-mounted load platform.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,961 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.34% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,797, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda CX-50's resale value?

The current average of $25,797 sits slightly below last year's $27,544.

That decline suggests the CX-50 has already absorbed some of its early depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you reduce the risk of taking the steepest early hit. Strong demand for well-kept examples should continue to support values, especially for desirable trims and cleaner histories.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda gives the CX-50 a generous standard package of driver-assistance systems, and the most advanced features are reserved for the CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. That top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.

The main caveat is that the expert drive noted a missed response from adaptive cruise control in heavier traffic, so you should test that system carefully if it matters to you. Even so, the overall safety package is strong, and the standard equipment is a major selling point.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-50 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.34% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends stylish design, fun driving manners, and standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $27,642, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,797 average.
• It leans more toward rugged, outdoorsy buyers and adds a more mature second-year feel.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and stronger deal potential, the 2023 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and prefer the updated second-year positioning, the 2024 is the secondary path for buyers who care less about price.
