What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a vehicle with a lot of use in rougher conditions. Focus on interior condition, infotainment usability, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches what you expect from the trim you’re shopping. If you want the most confidence, compare several listings side by side rather than jumping on the first clean one you see.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 S gets an 8.8-inch display, while other trims move to a larger 10.25-inch screen. The most expensive trim level adds Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
• Powertrain: The 2.5 S uses a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The 2.5 Turbo adds stronger acceleration, more towing capacity, and a turbocharged version of the same engine.
• Safety package: Mazda makes a generous standard package of driving assistance systems standard, with the most advanced features reserved for the top trim. The upper trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: Every CX-50 has Mazda Connect with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services. The base trim uses an 8.8-inch display, while other trims get a 10.25-inch display.
• Fuel efficiency: Mazda predicts the base engine will return 27 mpg in combined driving, while the turbo version is expected to return 25 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2023 Mazda CX-50 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered in 10 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo Premium, 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus, Meridian Edition, and 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the value-minded starting point if you want the CX-50’s style, standard all-wheel drive, and core tech without paying for the turbo upgrade. It makes the most sense if you care more about the overall package than maximum performance.
• 2.5 Turbo: This is the better pick if you want stronger acceleration and more towing ability, and it suits you if you plan to use the CX-50 for more demanding driving. It costs more, but it adds the performance character that many shoppers will notice immediately.
• 2.5 S Select: This is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment than the base trim without chasing the highest-priced versions. It should appeal to you if you want a more balanced daily driver.
• 2.5 S Preferred: This trim is a good middle ground if you want a nicer-feeling CX-50 without moving into luxury-priced territory. It’s a practical choice if you want comfort and features to improve without overcommitting on price.
• 2.5 S Premium: This is for you if you want a more upscale experience while staying with the standard engine. It’s a stronger fit if you value equipment and refinement over outright performance.
• 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete non-turbo package, especially because the top-end safety and convenience features are concentrated here. It’s the trim to target if you want the richest feature set without stepping into the turbo lineup.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium: This is the right choice if you want the turbo engine but don’t need every available feature. It gives you the stronger powertrain while keeping the price below the top trim.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the most fully equipped CX-50 and the one to buy if you want the advanced safety and convenience features that are exclusive to the top trim. It’s the best fit if you want the most complete version of the vehicle.
• Meridian Edition: This trim is aimed at you if you want a more rugged look and adventure-ready extras like all-terrain tires and a roof-mounted load platform. It’s the most lifestyle-focused choice in the lineup.
• 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition: This is the pick if you want the Meridian’s rugged character with the turbo engine’s extra punch. It suits you best if you want the most adventurous version without giving up performance.

The safety-package upgrades are concentrated on the top trim, so if those features matter to you, shop accordingly.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,050 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.27% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,687, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda CX-50's resale value?

The current average of $25,687 sits slightly below last year's $27,405.

That price movement suggests the CX-50 has already absorbed some of its early depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If the market continues to favor well-kept examples, a clean, well-optioned CX-50 should remain easier to move than a neglected one. For you as a future seller, condition and trim choice will matter more than chasing the newest possible model year.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 safe?

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 has not been crash tested by IIHS as this review was written.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda makes a generous standard package of driving assistance systems standard, and the most advanced features are reserved for the top trim. Those exclusive features include Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system. One notable caveat is that the adaptive cruise control system missed a slower vehicle cutting into the gap ahead during testing, so you should stay attentive even with driver assistance engaged.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-50 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It launches Mazda’s rugged-leaning CX-50 with standard advanced safety features and a design aimed at active lifestyles.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $27,556, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,687 average.
• It leans more rugged and outdoorsy while adding standard all-wheel drive.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2023 is the smarter starting point because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and a slightly more rugged focus, the 2024 is worth a look.
