Is the 2023 Kia Niro EV a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Kia Niro EV earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

It stands out as a redesigned entry-level electric vehicle with fresh styling, a more modern feel, and practical everyday usability. The cabin is described as spacious and stylish, and Kia backs it with a great warranty.

The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and all-wheel drive is not available. Even so, the model’s 42.0% good-or-great deal share suggests there’s meaningful market availability if you want to shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Kia Niro EV reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV is presented as a modern second-generation model with numerous mechanical and tech updates, which supports confidence in its overall design. The electric powertrain is described as smooth and refined, and the vehicle’s practical packaging points to a well-rounded ownership experience.

Kia also includes a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a five-year, 60,000-mile limited warranty, which helps reduce ownership anxiety. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging system have been cared for properly, since EV health matters more than traditional engine wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Niro EV?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on an EV where battery condition and charging behavior matter. Focus on overall condition, charging-port wear, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Wind trim includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and blind-spot collision avoidance for pulling out of parallel parking spaces. The Wave trim adds parking sensors and the Remote Smart Parking Assist automated parking system.
• Powertrain: The Niro EV uses a single electric motor with front-wheel drive and produces 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. It’s tuned more for smoothness and refinement than quick acceleration, and its performance is described as fairly pedestrian.
• Safety package: Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction is included, along with Highway Driving Assist, which adds automated lane centering. The Wave trim gets additional parking tech, and Highway Driving Assist II is optional on Wave.
• Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus SiriusXM satellite radio and a Harman Kardon audio system. Wireless smartphone integration is not included.
• Range & charging: Kia is aiming for 253 miles of range, and the battery pack is 64.8 kilowatt-hours. DC fast charging is rated at 85 kilowatts and takes about 45 minutes from 10% to 80%, while Level 2 charging can fully recharge the battery in about seven hours.
• Battery health: Check the battery state-of-health, confirm typical charging habits, and ask whether the car has spent most of its life on home charging or frequent DC fast charging. Also verify how much of the battery warranty remains so you know what protection you still have.

Which 2023 Kia Niro EV trim should I buy?

The 2023 Kia Niro EV is offered in 2 trim levels: Wind and Wave.

Here's the short version:

• Wind: This is the trim to start with if you want the core Niro EV experience and the strongest value. It includes the full standard driver-assistance suite, the 10.25-inch screens, wired smartphone integration, and the same basic electric powertrain as the higher trim.
• Wave: This is the better pick if you want more convenience and tech. It adds parking sensors, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and vehicle-to-load capability, and it’s the trim that can be equipped with Highway Driving Assist II.

Both trims get the standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and Highway Driving Assist, so you’re not giving up the key safety package by choosing the lower trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Niro EV?

It’s a buyer-friendly moment if you’re shopping carefully, because pricing has softened and there’s a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

• Deal availability: 42.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 728 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,749, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Kia Niro EV's resale value?

The current average of $21,816 sits slightly below last year's $22,677.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved into a more buyer-friendly part of its depreciation curve. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more reasonable entry point than shoppers did a year ago.

For a future seller, that can help if the market stabilizes and demand stays healthy for efficient, practical EVs. The model’s strong user satisfaction also supports buyer interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Kia Niro EV safe?

The 2023 Kia Niro EV does not have IIHS or NHTSA crash-test ratings available for this newly redesigned model.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard driver-assistance suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, blind-spot collision avoidance for pulling out of parallel parking spaces, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, navigation-based curve prediction, and Highway Driving Assist with automated lane centering.

The Wave trim adds parking sensors and Remote Smart Parking Assist, while Highway Driving Assist II is optional on Wave and adds automated lane-change capability. The main caveat is that this system is not a hands-free setup.

Should I buy a 2023 Kia Niro EV or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 42.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 model brings fresh styling, numerous mechanical and tech updates, and a more modern feel as part of the second-generation Niro lineup.

The bottom line: The 2023 Kia Niro EV makes the most sense if you want the redesigned version with updated styling, strong standard equipment, and a favorable used-market price trend. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may also want to compare it with older or cheaper EV alternatives, but the 2023 is the better pick if you value the newer design and the strong ownership satisfaction signal.
