CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Jeep Compass

Summary
With 8,186 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,615, 35.9% of 2023 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Jeep Compass 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Jeep Compass stands out because Jeep gave its small crossover a meaningful mechanical upgrade. A new turbocharged engine is standard, and the model also now has standard all-wheel drive, a more sophisticated transmission, and additional safety features. Those changes address one of the Compass’s long-running weaknesses and make this version feel more modern and more capable than before.
Even with those improvements, the Compass is not an automatic value pick. The test-drive notes call out poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat. Still, its stylish design and impressive technology help it remain appealing, and owner feedback echoes that appeal by praising the upgraded interior, larger touchscreen, and user-friendly feel.

The car seems to be a good value. It’s a perfect size. Wish it had an automatic lift gate.

Reviewed a 2023 Jeep Compass on Jul 8, 2023
The 2023 Jeep Compass is nothing short of an impressive upgrade to its predecessor, exemplifying Jeeps commitment to listen and respond to customer feedback. However, despite the undeniable improvements, it seems that Jeep has merely taken a half-step with the power upgrade, failing to live up to the level of progress weve seen elsewhere in the vehicle. First things first, lets applaud Jeeps design team. The 2023 Compass boasts an evolved aesthetic that keeps the spirit of the original, but its clearly a more refined, modern version. The bold grille, sleeker LED headlamps, and a more streamlined silhouette add an element of sophistication that previously eluded this model. Its the kind of vehicle that is as comfortable on urban streets as it is on rugged country trails. Inside, the Compass delivers a solid punch with an upgraded infotainment system, larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital drivers display that clearly takes cues from higher-end siblings in the Jeep family. The revamped interior not only appears more luxurious, but is also more intuitive, with a user-friendly layout and comfortable seating for all. Safety, one of Jeeps core principles, is also significantly improved in the 2023 Compass. With enhanced advanced driver-assist technologies such as Lane-Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and an improved Blind-Spot Monitoring System, the Compass confidently keeps up with modern safety standards, offering peace of mind on both city and off-road drives. Yet, the Achilles heel of the 2023 Jeep Compass lies under its hood. Jeep has indeed made updates to the powertrain with a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, now delivering 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. While this is an improvement over the previous model, the boost feels more like a small step rather than the giant leap this vehicle needed. The engine struggles to deliver swift acceleration, making it feel underpowered compared to competitors in its segment. On the highway, the Compass does reasonably well but could benefit from a bit more oomph during overtaking. Similarly, when the road gets rough and tumble, the Compass, despite its four-wheel-drive capabilities, leaves the driver wishing for just a bit more gusto under the pedal. In summary, the 2023 Jeep Compass is undoubtedly a commendable upgrade that showcases Jeeps commitment to its customers. With an elegant design, improved interior, and enhanced safety features, its a solid choice for anyone seeking a compact SUV. However, when it comes to the all-important power, Jeep still has some way to go. It feels like the brand stopped short of delivering the kind of powertrain that would elevate the Compass from being good to being exceptional. We cant help but feel that Jeep missed an opportunity here to make the Compass a true segment leader. Thus, were giving it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars, leaving room for that essential engine improvement that would complete the package.

How much does the 2023 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,603 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,637 |
| Year-Round High | $23,339 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,338 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.15% |
Prices have softened 3.15% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,207 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Jeep Compass earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, larger touchscreen, and user-friendly feel. The review summary also points to improved safety features and a more luxurious cabin presentation.
The trade-offs are familiar: the powertrain still leaves some drivers wanting more acceleration, and the model is not a value leader. In practical terms, this is a compact SUV that fits you best if you want a more upscale-feeling Jeep with strong tech rather than the cheapest possible commuter.
The market shows 36.6% good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a solid, user-friendly ownership experience, with praise for the upgraded interior, improved safety features, and overall appeal. The expert notes also describe the new turbocharged powertrain as quieter, smoother, and more refined, which supports confidence in day-to-day dependability.
Jeep also includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance through Jeep Wave, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about whether the vehicle was maintained well and used within its comfort zone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a full records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on visibility-related wear, cabin condition, and how the vehicle drives at low and highway speeds. If you are considering a Trailhawk or a heavily optioned trim, make sure the equipment actually works as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the base Sport, mid-level Latitude, upgraded Latitude Lux, upscale Limited, and Trailhawk, with Altitude, Red, and High Altitude as special-edition variants. The base trim misses automatic high-beam headlights, while higher trims add more upscale equipment and the Trailhawk is the one aimed at exploring off the beaten path.
- Powertrain: A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is standard, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The setup is smoother and more refined than before, but the engine is tuned for fuel economy and regular fuel rather than maximum punch.
- Safety package: Standard advanced driver-assistance systems include forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: Every model gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth for two devices, SiriusXM satellite radio, SiriusXM Guardian connected services, Wi-Fi access, Alexa Skill support, and over-the-air updates. A 10.25-inch digital instrument panel is available depending on trim and configuration.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA fuel economy rating is 27 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 23.8 mpg.
Which 2023 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2023 Jeep Compass is offered in 7 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, and High Altitude.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it still gets the standard turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the full core infotainment and safety setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and can live without the extra polish of the higher trims.
- Latitude: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of equipment and price. It builds on the standard mechanical and tech package while staying below the more expensive luxury-oriented versions, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
- Latitude Lux: This trim moves you closer to the upscale end of the range, with more premium presentation and equipment than the Latitude. It suits you if you want a nicer cabin without jumping all the way to the top trims.
- Limited: This is the most polished mainstream trim, with the upscale look and feel, available digital displays, and the richer feature content seen in the test vehicle. It is the right pick if you care most about comfort and tech, but it is also where pricing starts to become hard to justify.
- Trailhawk: This is the trim for buyers who want the Compass’s strongest off-road character. It adds the more serious trail hardware and capability-focused equipment, so it is the clear choice if you plan to leave pavement often.
- Altitude: Based on the Latitude Lux, this is mainly for shoppers who want a more distinctive appearance package with a more upscale starting point.
- Red: Based on the Limited, this is another appearance-led special edition for buyers who want the Limited’s upscale foundation with a different look.
- High Altitude: Based on the Limited, this is the most premium-looking special edition and fits buyers who want the richest presentation in the lineup.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but automatic high-beam headlights are not standard on the base Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,207 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,637, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $22,603 sits slightly below last year's $23,338.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it comes time to sell.
Demand should also stay supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and improved tech appeal. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2023 Jeep Compass earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and it had not yet received published NHTSA results at the time of review.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep adds a standard drowsy driver detection system and a rear-seat reminder system for 2023. Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors. Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude trims can also be equipped with Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist for limited-access highways.
Should I buy a 2023 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 brings a standard turbo engine, standard all-wheel drive, and more safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,988, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,603 average.
- It feels more upscale inside and emphasizes premium materials and technology.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,045, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,603 average.
- It keeps the upgraded powertrain and adds strong value in the base trim.
The bottom line: If you want the most improved Compass in this group, the 2023 is the primary pick because it combines the new powertrain, standard AWD, and stronger safety content. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 can both make sense, but the 2023 is the better all-around choice when you want the most modern version without moving up to a pricier trim.
