Why it stands out
The 2023 Jeep Compass stands out because Jeep gave its small crossover a meaningful mechanical upgrade. A new turbocharged engine is standard, along with standard all-wheel drive and a more sophisticated transmission, which together address one of the model’s long-running weaknesses. It also adds additional safety features, and the overall package is backed by stylish design and impressive technology.
That said, the 2023 Compass is not an easy value proposition. The available test-drive feedback points to poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat, so it appeals more for its upgraded driving hardware and feature set than for outright practicality or bargain pricing. Owners also tend to praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, larger touchscreen, and advanced technology, but some remain disappointed with the powertrain’s acceleration and power.

The car seems to be a good value. It’s a perfect size. Wish it had an automatic lift gate.

Reviewed a 2023 Jeep Compass on Jul 8, 2023
The 2023 Jeep Compass is nothing short of an impressive upgrade to its predecessor, exemplifying Jeeps commitment to listen and respond to customer feedback. However, despite the undeniable improvements, it seems that Jeep has merely taken a half-step with the power upgrade, failing to live up to the level of progress weve seen elsewhere in the vehicle. First things first, lets applaud Jeeps design team. The 2023 Compass boasts an evolved aesthetic that keeps the spirit of the original, but its clearly a more refined, modern version. The bold grille, sleeker LED headlamps, and a more streamlined silhouette add an element of sophistication that previously eluded this model. Its the kind of vehicle that is as comfortable on urban streets as it is on rugged country trails. Inside, the Compass delivers a solid punch with an upgraded infotainment system, larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital drivers display that clearly takes cues from higher-end siblings in the Jeep family. The revamped interior not only appears more luxurious, but is also more intuitive, with a user-friendly layout and comfortable seating for all. Safety, one of Jeeps core principles, is also significantly improved in the 2023 Compass. With enhanced advanced driver-assist technologies such as Lane-Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and an improved Blind-Spot Monitoring System, the Compass confidently keeps up with modern safety standards, offering peace of mind on both city and off-road drives. Yet, the Achilles heel of the 2023 Jeep Compass lies under its hood. Jeep has indeed made updates to the powertrain with a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, now delivering 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. While this is an improvement over the previous model, the boost feels more like a small step rather than the giant leap this vehicle needed. The engine struggles to deliver swift acceleration, making it feel underpowered compared to competitors in its segment. On the highway, the Compass does reasonably well but could benefit from a bit more oomph during overtaking. Similarly, when the road gets rough and tumble, the Compass, despite its four-wheel-drive capabilities, leaves the driver wishing for just a bit more gusto under the pedal. In summary, the 2023 Jeep Compass is undoubtedly a commendable upgrade that showcases Jeeps commitment to its customers. With an elegant design, improved interior, and enhanced safety features, its a solid choice for anyone seeking a compact SUV. However, when it comes to the all-important power, Jeep still has some way to go. It feels like the brand stopped short of delivering the kind of powertrain that would elevate the Compass from being good to being exceptional. We cant help but feel that Jeep missed an opportunity here to make the Compass a true segment leader. Thus, were giving it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars, leaving room for that essential engine improvement that would complete the package.

How much does the 2023 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,244 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,601 |
| Year-Round High | $23,141 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,824 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.54% |
Prices have softened 2.54% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 7,677 listings available, which suggests you should have a healthy number of options to compare.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Jeep Compass earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, and advanced technology, and many also like the larger touchscreen and more user-friendly cabin. The Compass also benefits from a more polished presentation and improved safety features, which helps it feel more upscale than its size might suggest.
The trade-offs are clear: poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat. That makes it a better fit if you care more about the upgraded hardware and feature set than maximum practicality or bargain pricing.
With 33.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you can still find some market flexibility if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with many owners describing the Compass as a solid compact SUV choice and praising its improved safety features and upgraded interior. The expert review also notes that Jeep has dramatically improved the Compass over the past two years, with a new interior, infotainment system, safety features, and other tech.
Jeep also includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and additional perks through Jeep Wave, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about whether you’re paying too much for a trim that doesn’t match your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a close inspection of the cabin, visibility, and rear-seat space, since those are the areas where this model draws the most criticism. It also makes sense to focus on how the powertrain feels in real-world driving, because owners and experts both point to acceleration and power as potential weak spots.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the base Sport to Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, and High Altitude. The base Sport misses automatic high-beam headlights, while higher trims add more upscale equipment and features.
- Powertrain: Every model gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. The setup is smoother and more refined than before, but it still prioritizes fuel economy over outright power.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: Every model gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth for two devices, SiriusXM satellite radio, connected services, Wi-Fi access, Alexa Skill support, and over-the-air updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA fuel economy rating is 27 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 23.8 mpg.
Which 2023 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2023 Jeep Compass is offered in 8 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, High Altitude.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive, and the full infotainment setup. It makes the most sense if you want the Compass experience at the lowest price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience upgrades.
- Latitude: This is the trim to watch if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It builds on the base model without pushing you into the expensive upper end of the lineup, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
- Latitude Lux: This trim moves the Compass further into upscale territory with more premium content and a richer feel. It suits you if you want a nicer cabin and more features without jumping all the way to the top trims.
- Limited: This is the most polished mainstream trim, with the upscale look and feel, available digital instrumentation, and the strongest mix of comfort and tech. It’s the right pick if you want the most well-rounded Compass and don’t mind paying more.
- Trailhawk: This is the one to choose if you want the most off-road-focused Compass. It adds Jeep Active Drive Low, a low range, a 20:1 crawl ratio, Rock mode, hill descent control, skid plates, recovery hooks, and more aggressive tires.
- Altitude: Based on the Latitude Lux, this trim is mainly about appearance and a more upscale presentation. It fits you if style matters more than maximum feature content.
- Red: Based on the Limited, this special edition leans into appearance and exclusivity. It makes sense if you want Limited-level equipment with a distinct look.
- High Altitude: Also based on the Limited, this is the most upscale-feeling special edition in the lineup. It’s best if you want a more premium Compass and are comfortable paying for it.
The Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude trims are available with Highway Assist, while the base Sport misses automatic high-beam headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,677 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.54% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,601, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $22,244 sits slightly below last year's $22,824.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Compass is holding value reasonably well, but not strongly enough to signal a rising market. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower average price than a year ago, which can help limit depreciation exposure later.
The model’s appeal is supported by its improved tech, standard all-wheel drive, and strong owner satisfaction. Those traits can help keep demand steady when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2023 Jeep Compass earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Jeep adds a standard drowsy driver detection system and a rear-seat reminder system for 2023, and all but the base Sport trim feature automatic high-beam headlights. Standard advanced driver assistance includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors. The Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude trims are also available with Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist.
The main caveat is that the IIHS results are incomplete, so you should check for the latest crash-test updates before you buy.
Should I buy a 2023 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.54% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 adds a new turbo engine, standard all-wheel drive, and more safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,470, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,244 average.
- It offers a more upscale feel with premium interior materials and impressive technology.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $20,417, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,244 average.
- It keeps the powertrain upgrade and adds strong value at the base trim.
The bottom line: If you want the most improved Compass with standard AWD and the newest hardware, the 2023 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 can both be smart alternatives, especially if you’re focused on lower-trim value.
