CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 1,385 currently listed for sale and an average price of $38,575, 33.9% of 2023 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
88.4% of 2023 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW 5 Series is part of the seventh-generation G30 lineup, which is described as a comfortable luxury sedan with a little bit of verve rather than the driver’s car it once was. It still carries the 5 Series’ traditional appeal as a midsize luxury sedan with performance roots, but this generation is more subdued in character and styling than earlier versions. Buyers also get a broad spread of powertrains, from the 530i’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the 540i’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, plus xDrive availability on both. For shoppers who want more efficiency or more punch, the lineup also includes the 530e plug-in hybrid, the 540d diesel, and the M550i xDrive, which uses a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 with 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.
This generation also stands out for its mix of technology and safety equipment. BMW added the 530e, 540d, and M550i in 2018, and in 2019 it killed the diesel model and the Apple CarPlay subscription fee, although Android Auto was still unavailable. The 2021 facelift brought a tweaked front end and a larger infotainment touchscreen, while the plug-in hybrid gained a power bump to 288 ponies and the 540i received a mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency and better stop/start performance. Standard safety equipment is generous, including blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams, though some of BMW’s best systems remain optional.
For buyers, the 2023 5 Series offers a lot of luxury and capability, but it is not as engaging as older 5 Series models. Reviewers noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i do not create as engaging a drive as earlier versions and that the car feels heavy. Even so, it remains more fun than many of its staid competitors, and its much better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation adds some peace of mind. It is also still expensive, with used examples typically commanding strong prices, especially for the M550i.

The 540i with M Sport, Shadowline and Executive packages checks a lot of boxes. Power and quickness to spare, excellent mileage for a sport sedan, luxurious interior and a topflight sound system. Its practical, comfortable and speedy. Many reviewers bemoan the muted steering feedback in this generation of bimmers and theyre not wrong. But this isnt a sports car and it isnt lightweight. It a smooth operator running on what feels like an underrated 335 hp B58 engine. Feels closer to 375 the way is launches from a standstill or leaps from 70 to 85 on the freeway. This is my third 5 series over a span of 15 years with a couple of other cars in between, and its the most refined yet.

How much does the 2023 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,656 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,494.63 |
| Year-Round High | $41,475.93 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,484 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.82% |
Prices have softened 6.82% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,373 listings available, which suggests you have meaningful inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $38,494.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2023 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong shopper satisfaction.
The overview describes it as a luxury sedan that leans more toward refinement and everyday comfort than older 5 Series models, while still keeping enough traditional BMW character to feel engaging. It also highlights a broad range of powertrains and a well-equipped package, which makes it appealing if you want a midsize luxury sedan that balances comfort with performance.
With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to a mature seventh-generation design with generous standard safety equipment and a refined, comfort-focused personality. It also notes that BMW’s systems can be complex to learn, so the ownership experience may depend on how comfortable you are with the car’s technology.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright appeal and more about making sure the car’s condition and maintenance history match its premium positioning.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, infotainment usability, and overall condition. Because this model emphasizes technology and comfort, you’ll want to make sure every feature works as intended and that the cabin and controls show normal wear for the mileage.
It also makes sense to compare trim and equipment carefully, since some of the best safety and convenience features were optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on standout listings.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,373 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.82% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,494.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $38,656 sits slightly below last year's $41,484.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale performance will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition, mileage, and documentation.
Because this model has strong owner satisfaction, demand should remain healthy for clean examples with the right equipment and history. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $44,580, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $38,656 average.
- It shifts toward a quieter, more comfort-focused driving experience.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2023 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid deal availability and strong satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for the newer redesign and a more refined, comfort-first feel, the 2024 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize that newer-generation experience over price.
