CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Taos
overall

Summary
With 2,783 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,028, 39.6% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
88.8% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a small crossover that sits between the usual size classes, making it a practical choice for shoppers who want more space and utility than many small SUVs without moving up to a larger vehicle. Volkswagen also positions it as part of a growing crossover lineup, and the result is a model aimed at buyers who want an affordable, space-conscious alternative in a crowded segment.
Its strongest appeal is straightforward: it is fuel-efficient, offers plenty of cargo space, and includes affordable advanced safety features. Those traits make the Taos easy to recommend for everyday use, especially if value and practicality matter most. Owners also tend to praise its roomy interior and excellent gas mileage, which reinforces its usefulness as a daily driver.
The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The transmission can be irritating, and the technology is not especially intuitive. Some owners also mention underwhelming power and noisy tires, so the Taos may not feel as polished in every respect as its strengths suggest.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance. They also like the quality and handling, with some comparing it favorably to more expensive vehicles.
The main trade-offs are the irritating transmission and the unintuitive technology. For everyday use, the Taos makes the most sense if you want a practical, space-conscious crossover with strong value and utility rather than the most polished drivetrain or infotainment experience.
The market also looks supportive, with 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling daily driver, with praise for its roomy cabin, excellent gas mileage, and overall quality. That kind of positive long-term impression matters when you’re shopping used, because it suggests the Taos has earned trust from people living with it every day.
The expert drive notes also describe it as a strong value with rewarding ride and handling characteristics, and Volkswagen includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the transmission and infotainment quirks may remain part of the experience.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any specific listing and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has been driven in heavy traffic or has higher mileage. Focus on overall condition, because the Taos’s value proposition depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether its technology and drivetrain behave as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, and SEL trims differ meaningfully in cabin finish and equipment. The base S is the most stripped-down version, while the SEL adds more upscale interior materials and more standard convenience and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The standard front-wheel-drive setup uses an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion all-wheel drive brings a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a different rear suspension layout.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is the named driver-assistance suite. On the S, it is a $995 option package with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On the SE, those features are standard except for the package-specific additions. The SEL includes all of this standard, plus rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
- Infotainment: The S gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while the SE and SEL use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Car-Net connected services are standard, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with SE trim. The SEL adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Taos is described as fuel-efficient, and the expert testing notes 28 mpg in combined driving for the SEL 4Motion test vehicle. The same testing recorded 27.1 mpg during evaluation.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes the Taos’s core value case work if you want the lowest starting price. It gives you the basic Taos formula, but you’ll want to pay close attention to the safety and tech packages because the base trim leaves more equipment on the table.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the more advanced 8-inch infotainment setup, wireless smartphone integration, wireless charging, and more standard safety content. If you want the Taos to feel properly equipped without moving all the way up the range, this is the one to target.
- SEL: This is the most upscale version, with the most complete safety and convenience content, plus navigation and the premium BeatsAudio system. It suits you best if you want the most features and the most polished Taos experience.
The SEL includes all of the IQ Drive safety technology as standard equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,745 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,993, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $17,993 sits slightly below last year's $20,148.
That price movement suggests the Taos has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you should expect a more competitive resale environment than last year, especially if your vehicle has average mileage or visible wear.
The good news is that the Taos still has a strong value story: roomy packaging, useful fuel economy, and broad appeal as a practical crossover. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
The 2022 Taos earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen makes IQ Drive standard or available across the trim range, and the suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. The SEL adds rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
One caveat is that the test vehicle’s reverse automatic braking could be overly sensitive in some situations. That means you should pay attention to how the system behaves during a test drive and make sure the driver-assistance settings suit your routine.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 introduced Volkswagen’s new affordable crossover with roomy packaging and strong value appeal.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $20,519, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,993 average.
- It adds more standard safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better price and a strong used-market value story, the 2022 is the smarter starting point. If you’re willing to pay more for added standard equipment, the 2023 is the better fit for buyers who prioritize extra features over upfront savings.
