Used 2022 Volkswagen Golf R for Sale near Connecticut

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R a good car?

Yes — 5/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

Owners consistently praise its handling, performance, and comfort, and they also like that it works well for both daily driving and more spirited use. That lines up with the Golf R’s everyday-usability angle in the overview: you get a special-feeling hot hatch without giving up practicality. The main trade-offs are uninspired styling and unintuitive technology, and some owners caution against paying more than the sticker price. Even so, with 26.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough that buyers are happy with the purchase over time, especially when they value its performance and comfort as a daily driver.

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Golf R is comfortable and composed in regular use, which supports the idea that it should be easy to live with long term. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the core hardware and more about making sure you buy a well-kept example with no hidden issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Golf R?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially because this car’s value depends heavily on condition and equipment. Focus on signs of hard use, since the Golf R is a performance hatchback that may have been driven more aggressively than a typical commuter. You should also verify that the technology and driver-assistance features work properly, because the cabin is heavily dependent on touch-based controls.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Golf R is positioned as a fully loaded, all-inclusive package, with premium touches like a redesigned cabin, blue interior accents, ambient lighting, a panoramic power sunroof, and sport seats with Nappa leather upholstery. The base setup already includes heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a driver-focused cockpit, so there is no stripped-down version to lean on for savings.
• Powertrain: A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 315 horsepower with the six-speed manual, or 295 lb-ft with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Standard 4Motion all-wheel drive adds rear-axle torque vectoring, and the car offers Comfort, Sport, Race, Drift, Special, and Custom drive modes.
• Safety package: Volkswagen IQ.Drive is standard and includes pre-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane keep assist, lane centering, parking assist, automatic high beams, and dynamic road sign displays. Travel Assist is available, and DCT-equipped models add Emergency Assist.
• Infotainment: The Golf R uses a 10-inch touchscreen with Volkswagen’s Discover Pro system, plus wireless device charging, WiFi hotspot capability, voice commands, HD radio, SiriusXM with 360L, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and four USB-C ports. It also gets a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings are 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined with the DCT, or 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined with the manual.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Golf R trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is offered in 1 trim level: Golf R.

Here's the short version:

The Golf R is the trim to buy because it is the only one, and it already bundles the performance hardware, premium cabin features, and standard safety tech that define the car. If you want the most engaging setup, the manual gives you the lower entry price and the same core character; if you want easier daily driving, the DCT adds convenience and slightly better fuel economy. The standard safety package is comprehensive, so you do not need to climb a trim ladder to get the important driver aids.
