Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10. The Atlas is built around passenger comfort, cargo space, and utility, so it makes the most sense if you want a roomy three-row SUV that’s easy to understand and straightforward to live with. Its trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, the Atlas remains appealing if your priority is space above all else. Good and great deals account for 40.0% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The Atlas is positioned as a practical family SUV, and its strengths center on comfort, cargo room, and everyday usefulness rather than complexity. Volkswagen also includes Carefree Coverage, which adds complimentary scheduled service for two years or 20,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Atlas’s less refined powertrain and cabin materials may age less gracefully than its space and comfort advantages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Atlas?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or vehicles with lots of family-duty wear. Focus on cabin condition, infotainment operation, and how the SUV drives over rough pavement, since comfort and usability are central to the Atlas’s appeal. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the equipment level matches your needs before you buy.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from SE to SEL Premium R-Line, and the base SE is the most stripped-down version. It has the smallest touchscreen and the older infotainment setup, while higher trims add more standard features and a more upscale feel.
• Powertrain: The standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.6-liter V6 makes 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. The turbo four is more efficient, but it requires premium fuel for maximum output, and the V6 is the better choice if you want the stronger towing rating.
• Safety package: SE models include Front Assist, Side Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert. SE with Technology adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go plus front and rear parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking. SEL trims add the full IQ Drive suite, including Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, brighter LED headlights with automatic high beams, and adaptive front lighting. Some features are reserved for higher trims.
• Infotainment: The SE uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen and last-generation infotainment, while other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and connected services. SEL trims add a 10.25-inch digital cluster display.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged four-cylinder returns 22 mpg to 23 mpg in combined driving, while the V6 returns 19 mpg to 20 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Atlas’s core strengths at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the roomiest, most straightforward version and don’t need the extra tech or luxury touches.
• SE with Technology: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and the newer infotainment setup without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SEL: This trim is the sweet spot if you want the more complete safety and convenience package, including the full IQ Drive suite and the larger digital cluster display.
• SEL R-Line: This trim adds the V6 and a more upscale appearance, so it makes sense if you want stronger standard power and a more distinctive look.
• SEL R-Line Black: This new-for-2022 trim builds on the R-Line formula with a darker appearance package, making it a fit if style matters most.
• SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with the most premium presentation and the strongest feature set, but it’s best for buyers who want the top-end experience rather than value.

The SEL trim gets the full IQ Drive safety suite, while lower trims leave some driver-assistance features out.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Atlas?

It’s a buyer-friendly market for this SUV, with strong inventory and a meaningful share of listings priced competitively.

• Deal availability: 40.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,249 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.93% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 83.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,935, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?

The current average of $23,935 sits slightly below last year's $27,810.

That price movement suggests the Atlas has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to stand out. The Atlas’s strong space, comfort, and family-friendly appeal should still help it hold attention among shoppers who need a three-row SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas safe?

The 2022 Atlas does not earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it gets four-star ratings for the driver and front passenger in frontal-impact tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen equips the Atlas with Front Assist, Side Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, and automatic post-collision braking on the SE. SE with Technology adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability plus front and rear parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking. SEL trims add the full IQ Drive suite, including Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, brighter LED headlights with automatic high beams, and adaptive front lighting. Higher trims also add surround-view camera capability and parking assist. One caveat is that Lane Assist can be overly sensitive to road markings and construction scars.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 40.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 keeps the refreshed Atlas formula with roomy packaging and a broad safety-tech lineup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,584, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,935 average.
• It’s a practical, space-first family SUV with limited changes.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the newer market position, stronger deal availability, and the refreshed feature set. If your priority is simply getting the Atlas’s space and utility for less money, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path.
