Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota RAV4 4.44 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a compact SUV that has matured without losing its appeal. It combines a stylish exterior with a roomy, flexible interior, and it offers a range of efficient powertrains. Toyota also equips it with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday appeal for buyers looking for a practical family vehicle.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is not without compromises. The available manual transmission is not available, the stereo is lacking, and its value for money is poor. Even so, its cargo space and overall versatility help explain why it remains a strong contender in its class.

This was a sharp looking car except when I saw it in person! There were 2 large dents on the passenger side of the car along with deep scratches all over the hood! The online pictures do not reflect this at all. We didn’t even ask to look at the inside or test drive it for this reason.

I have just purchased my 4th RAV4 and couldnt be happier. They are the perfect car for me: plenty of inside room, good handling on gravel roads and in snow, and get decent mileage. The overall look of the car has improved since my last one [2015] and I look forward to taking it on some anticipated road trips.

The reason Toyota sells so many of these is that they are a perfect vehicles. We bought the Adventure edition for our 17-year-old daughter. Looks, style, usefulness, practical, you name it. We all love it and any of us are comfortable with it regardless of age group. Great job Toyota.

How much does the 2022 Toyota RAV4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $27,879 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,247 |
| Year-Round High | $28,301 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,300 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.49% |
Prices have softened 1.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,857 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota RAV4 earns 4.44/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from experts. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise its practicality, comfort, performance, spacious interior, and advanced technology features. The review summary also points to strong handling in different weather conditions, which fits its role as a practical family vehicle.
The trade-offs are familiar: the interior can feel basic to some shoppers, the lack of leather seating options comes up in feedback, and the value proposition is not especially strong. Even so, the RAV4’s roomy cabin and versatile packaging make it a sensible fit if you want an everyday SUV with broad appeal.
Good and great deals account for 34.8% of listings, so you can still find competitive pricing if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback also points to reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership, with many owners describing it as a vehicle they can count on over the long term.
The expert review reinforces that theme by calling out the RAV4’s long-term dependability and durability. It also notes that the gasoline model’s naturally aspirated engine delivers power smoothly and immediately, without troublesome turbo lag.
Toyota includes the first scheduled maintenance visit as part of the ownership experience, which helps early running costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the platform itself and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or vehicles with multiple owners. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trims get a 7-inch touchscreen, while XLE models and above upgrade to a 9-inch screen. Higher grades also add more premium equipment, so you should pay close attention to how much tech and convenience you want before settling on the cheapest version.
- Powertrain: The gasoline model uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. AWD is available across the lineup, and the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions bring different efficiency and output levels.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Higher grades add blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, while front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is available on upper grades.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect. XLE models and above get a 9-inch touchscreen, while Limited models and the RAV4 Prime XSE can add an 11-speaker JBL system and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD gasoline models return 27-28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. AWD gasoline models are rated at 25-27 mpg city, 32-34 mpg highway, and 28-30 mpg combined. The hybrid is rated at 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined, while the Prime can deliver 40 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, 38 mpg combined, plus 94 MPGe combined and up to 42 miles of electric-only driving.
Which 2022 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core RAV4 formula with standard safety tech, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the efficient 2.5-liter engine. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup, but you’ll give up some of the nicer infotainment and comfort upgrades found higher up.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience without pushing the price too far. You get the 9-inch touchscreen upgrade, and it’s a smart middle ground if you want more everyday usability than the LE.
- XLE Premium: This is the trim to consider if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It builds on the XLE’s equipment and is a good fit if you care about comfort and a more polished cabin.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich mainstream trim, with the strongest mix of comfort and tech. It suits you if you want the most complete gas-powered RAV4 experience short of the specialty models.
- Adventure: This trim is AWD-only and is aimed at buyers who want a more rugged-looking RAV4 with extra capability-oriented hardware. It’s the right pick if you like the tougher personality and don’t mind paying more for it.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the most specialized gas trim, and it’s the one to choose if you want the most off-road-focused version in the lineup. It sits at the top of the gas range and is best for buyers who specifically want that character.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while higher grades add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear cross-traffic braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,857 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,247, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $27,879 sits slightly below last year's $28,300.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than on broad market appreciation.
The RAV4’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who prioritize practicality and reliability. If you keep the vehicle clean, documented, and accident-free, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 safe?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, and the RAV4 Prime is a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Higher grades add blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is available on upper grades.
The main caveat is that the Prime’s stronger IIHS result reflects slightly better side-impact performance, while the standard RAV4 still posts a strong overall safety showing.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 keeps the RAV4’s mature styling, roomy cabin, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,119, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,879 average.
- It adds the RAV4 Prime to the lineup and broadens trim and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $30,361, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $27,879 average.
- It updates the infotainment system while keeping the familiar RAV4 formula.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the current-generation RAV4’s proven mix of practicality, safety, and broad market availability without paying 2023 prices. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2021 can be the smarter buy, especially if you find a clean example with the equipment you want.
