CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 219 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $19,015.00, 43.4% of 2022 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Corolla 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains a solid choice among compact cars, and its appeal starts with how many ways Toyota lets buyers configure it. For 2022, the only significant change is the addition of two new colors: Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl. Beyond that, shoppers still get sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain options, including a hybrid.
That breadth helps explain why the Corolla continues to be a popular pick for buyers who want a reliable and sensible compact car. The lineup also includes the expected range of trim levels, with the sedan offered in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE. The Apex Edition is described as the sportiest Corolla variant, and the review notes that the Corolla’s technology is outdated and its performance can feel sluggish, so its strengths are more about practicality, choice, and everyday usefulness than excitement.

Overall im happy with my purchase, it was a good car at a good price, there were a minor dent in the front lip that was conviently placed to be covered by the bottom of the ad, which is misleading but not a deal breaker.

Dependable and attractive design, with practical features so there isnt a bunch of added flash that you end up paying for. Wish there were more of these cars around so the demand would go down. These are higher priced due to demand for sure.

How much does the 2022 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,728 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,159.10 |
| Year-Round High | $19,636.41 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,633 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.61% |
Prices have softened 4.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,175 listings available, which suggests healthy inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
If you find a listing below $18,159.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota Corolla earns 4.17/5 from owners and a 7.17/10 expert rating, which lines up with its role as a practical compact car rather than an enthusiast pick. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and many also like the feature set and overall sense that it is a solid investment. The trade-offs are clear in the expert review: the technology feels outdated, and performance can feel sluggish.
That fits the Corolla’s broader mission well. If you want a sensible compact car with lots of configuration choices, it makes sense; if you want excitement or the latest tech, you may want to look elsewhere.
With 26.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is enough market flexibility to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable design and a car that feels well worth the investment, which is exactly the kind of language used when shoppers expect a trouble-free ownership experience. The expert review also reinforces that theme by describing the Corolla as reliable and sensible, with a reputation built around long-term practicality.
It also helps that Toyota backs the Corolla with a straightforward warranty package, and the expert review notes that the car is a good all-rounder for buyers who want something they can count on. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Corolla’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use: tire wear, brake feel, interior wear, and whether the car’s equipment works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Corolla’s styling changes by trim, with SE and XSE models getting a more aggressive front fascia, Nightshade Editions adding blacked-out trim, and Apex Editions adding bronze accents and model-specific 18-inch wheels. Base trims are simpler and less flashy, while higher trims add more visual character.
- Powertrain: The sedan offers a 1.8-liter four-cylinder in L, LE, and XLE trims, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder in SE and XSE trims. The 2.0-liter brings stronger output, and the Apex Edition adds a sport exhaust system.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but not standard on all trim levels.
- Infotainment: The L trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, Amazon Alexa integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine with CVT is rated at up to 34 mpg combined, and the manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 31 mpg combined. The Corolla Hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 7 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Apex Edition, Nightshade Edition.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the simplest entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost Corolla and can live with the smaller 7-inch touchscreen and fewer visual extras.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen while staying focused on everyday commuting comfort and practicality.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla with the stronger feature set associated with the higher trim.
- SE: This is the right pick if you want the more powerful 2.0-liter engine and a sportier look without going all the way to the specialty editions.
- XSE: This is the most appealing mainstream trim if you want the stronger engine plus more available equipment, including the upgraded audio system.
- Apex Edition: Pick this only if you specifically want the sportiest Corolla flavor, since it adds a sport exhaust and chassis changes that sharpen handling but also stiffen the ride.
- Nightshade Edition: This is mainly for buyers who want the blacked-out appearance treatment rather than a major mechanical upgrade.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it is not standard on all trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,175 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,159.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $18,728 sits slightly below last year's $19,633.
That price movement suggests the Corolla has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. A softer current price can also make the car easier to buy well today, which matters because a good purchase price usually supports a better resale outcome later.
The Corolla’s broad appeal should help it remain easy to move in the used market, especially because shoppers still value its practicality and reputation. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?
Both the Corolla sedan and hatchback received an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick+” award for the 2022 model year, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a five-star overall safety rating with five stars in frontal and side crash tests and four stars in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 brings forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but not standard on all trim levels.
The main caveat is that the headlights received lower IIHS ratings on some trims, so you should pay attention to the specific version you are considering.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the Corolla’s broad lineup of body styles, transmissions, and powertrain choices.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,154, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,728 average.
- It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging personality.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping environment and don’t mind paying a bit more, the 2022 is the safer all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the current-year market advantages, the 2021 is the value play.
