CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 482 currently listed for sale and an average price of $46,879, 28.8% of 2022 Tesla Model S listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Tesla Model S 4.29 / 5 stars.
83.2% of 2022 Tesla Model S listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the defining electric sedans because it combines long-range capability, advanced technology, and sports car-style acceleration in a package that helped set the standard for modern EVs. Tesla’s approach to the Model S has always been software-driven, and the car’s constant over-the-air updates are part of what keeps it feeling current. For buyers, that means a used 2022 example benefits from the brand’s ongoing focus on software, charging, and driver-assistance improvements rather than relying on a traditional annual redesign cycle.
By 2022, the Model S had already moved well beyond its early minimalist roots and into a more performance-focused, feature-rich phase. The buying guide notes that from 2022 through 2025, Tesla rolled out Autopilot HW4 and continued making OTA updates with a focus on autonomy and FSD. The 2022 Model S also sits in the post-2021 refresh era, which brought an all-new interior with a yoke steering wheel, a premium 22-speaker, 560-watt audio system, adaptive cruise control, a blind spot monitor, and a range of standard comfort features including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, wireless phone charging, and a glass roof. The available Full Self-Driving Capability package adds self-parking, Smart Summon, and hands-free highway driving, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available at all.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Model S is praised for its speed, technology, and Supercharging network, but some owners point to rear seat space, the practicality of the yoke steering wheel, and the lack of physical dashboard controls as drawbacks. Even so, the 2022 Tesla Model S remains distinctive because it blends futuristic design, strong performance, and a deeply software-centered ownership experience in a way few rivals match.

the model S Tesla is not only a beautiful car, but also a superb auto. I think one of the biggest EV advantages of the Tesla models, is numerous locations of Super Charging Stations, which enable 300 to 600 miles of charge per hour of charge time at only .35 cents per KW hr... and the FSD seems unbelievable amazing & accurate.

The car is not worth the cost. There is no foot room for the back seat rider. Back seat room is too cramped. Interior material is subpar for a luxury car. Yoke stirring wheel is not practical.

Is the 2022 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — the 4.29/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the performance and technology, and they also like the speed, reliability, and Supercharging network. The futuristic design and advanced features are recurring positives, while the 2022 Model S’s long-range capability and software-driven ownership experience make it especially appealing if you want an EV that still feels current. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback highlights reliability, and drivers also describe the car as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. That matters for a used EV because software, charging, and drivetrain consistency are central to the ownership experience. You should prioritize a history report first, then inspect the car closely for signs of prior damage, uneven wear, or repair quality issues. Focus on overall condition, since the Model S’s technology-heavy setup makes it especially important that everything functions as intended. A careful test drive and a thorough pre-purchase inspection can help you separate a clean example from one that may need extra attention.

If you find a listing below $46,310, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $46,889 sits slightly above last year's $46,299.
That modest increase suggests the market still sees steady demand for this model year. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you should have a reasonable shot at preserving value better than a vehicle with weaker demand. The combination of EV appeal, strong technology, and active shopper interest helps support future resale prospects.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.27% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2022 Model S makes the most sense if you want a used Tesla with strong owner satisfaction, solid inventory, and a price point that still looks manageable relative to the market. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2022 is the better primary target when you want a balanced mix of demand, condition, and buyer confidence.
