CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 3,256 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,087.00, 34.4% of 2022 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
85.7% of 2022 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback stands out because it adds a Wilderness trim aimed at buyers who want more capability from Subaru’s adventure-focused formula. It is presented as a new family of even more capable SUVs, and Subaru says the Wilderness version was created to address the calibration issues that can come with modifying a vehicle for off-road use while still giving owners the improved outdoor ability they want. That makes this Outback especially appealing to shoppers who like the brand’s all-wheel-drive reputation and want a more rugged take on the familiar wagon-like SUV shape.
It also brings practical strengths that matter in everyday use. The Outback is described as spacious, and it comes with standard advanced safety features, including EyeSight driving aids on most of the automaker’s models. At the same time, the design may be polarizing, and the technology can be unintuitive, so the 2022 Subaru Outback is best suited to buyers who value capability, safety, and roominess more than a simple or understated cabin experience.

Car is good value. The car is missing more customizable features in the entertainment system such as visual preferences & saving settings (i.e. A.S.S. feature off).

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

How much does the 2022 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,157 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,165.45 |
| Year-Round High | $26,429.01 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,427 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.59% |
Prices have softened 8.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,324 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $24,165.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, value for the price, and strong performance in snowy conditions. They also like the driving experience and the rugged look. On the other hand, some owners say the base-engine power could be better, and the infotainment system can feel complicated.
That fits the Outback’s use case well: it’s aimed at you if you want capability, safety, and roominess more than a simple or understated cabin experience. Good and great deals account for 29.7% of listings, so there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and worth counting on, especially for buyers who want a long-term ownership experience with strong everyday utility. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Outback’s formula is built around what people really need: reliability, low cost, high resale, and safety.
Subaru also frames the model as a comfortable daily driver that handles bad weather especially well, which reinforces its practical dependability. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example may not deliver the same confidence if its maintenance history is thin or its technology has been poorly cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that has seen harsh weather or outdoor use. Focus on overall condition, especially the cabin, tires, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness trim stands apart with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tires, revised bumpers, a unique grille, black 17-inch wheels, and water-repellant StarTex upholstery. It also adds a roof rack and roof rail system with a 700-pound static load rating, plus waterproof rear seatback material and a waterproof cargo tray. The trade-off is that ventilated seats are not included, so you’re choosing ruggedness over luxury comfort.
- Powertrain: The Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. It also has standard all-wheel drive, revised final-drive ratios, a 3,500-pound towing capacity, and X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes plus hill descent control.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
- Infotainment: You get an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen that handles infotainment and climate functions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but the system relies heavily on the touchscreen and voice recognition can be frustrating.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test route returned 21.3 mpg.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
The Wilderness is the clear choice if you want the most capability and the most distinctive personality in the lineup. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tires, upgraded body protection, X-Mode traction tuning, and the rugged interior and cargo touches that make it the best fit for outdoor-focused use. If you want the most value from this specific model year, this is the trim that best captures the Outback’s purpose.
The safety package centers on EyeSight, and the Wilderness also gets blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance and rear cross-traffic warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,324 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,165.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $24,157 sits slightly below last year's $26,427.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. If you plan to resell later, your return will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and mileage. Strong demand for capable, safety-focused vehicles should help, but the current price trend suggests you should not expect rapid appreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2022 Outback Wilderness did not have crash-test results available in this review, but the standard Outback earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
One caveat is that DriverFocus distraction mitigation is not available on the Wilderness trim. The expert review also notes that EyeSight is carefully calibrated from the factory, which matters because modifications can reduce its effectiveness.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Wilderness trim adds more capability while preserving EyeSight calibration for factory-spec safety performance.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,368, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,157 average.
- It emphasizes practical space, reliability, and low-cost ownership.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,475, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,157 average.
- It adds fresh styling and updated infotainment and safety tech.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the Wilderness-specific capability and can find a clean example at a competitive price. If your priority is saving money first, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want newer updates and are willing to pay more, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
