How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,988 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, and spacious interior, and many also value its AWD capability and technology. That lines up with the Forester’s practical mission: it is built for everyday usefulness, not flash. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and fairly pedestrian performance, so it fits you best if you care more about space, confidence, and utility than acceleration. With 33.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on the Forester’s comfortable ride and all-around usefulness. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing it as simple and easy to drive, safe and secure, and known for its durability and knack for holding its value over time. Subaru also frames it as a practical tool for daily living, which is the kind of reputation that usually matters most when you want a vehicle you can count on for the long haul.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright fragility and more about choosing a well-kept example that has been maintained properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a Wilderness model or any vehicle that may have seen rougher use. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear, and whether the equipment matches the trim you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model starts with standard all-wheel drive and a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims add features such as an 8-inch screen, navigation, a premium audio system, and a power rear liftgate. The Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty.
• Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive. It is tuned for everyday usability rather than strong acceleration, and the Wilderness version adds a more off-road-oriented setup with improved low-speed torque delivery and a higher towing capacity.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Standard and available safety features also include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear-seat reminder system.
• Infotainment: Base trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims upgrade to an 8-inch screen, with navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system available.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 25.9 mpg during evaluation.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the 6.5-inch touchscreen, and the model’s practical, easygoing character.
• Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of value and everyday comfort. It adds useful convenience and tech upgrades without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality and a more feature-rich feel than the lower trims provide.
• Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most rugged version of the Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, protective body cladding, all-terrain tires, and off-road-focused hardware.
• Limited: This is the better choice if you want more upscale equipment and the larger 8-inch infotainment screen without going all the way to the top trim.
• Touring: Buy this if you want the most fully equipped Forester, including the highest-end comfort and safety content.

Touring trim also adds DriverFocus, which is the trim-level safety feature to note if you want the most advanced driver-monitoring setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,988 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 85.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,135, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $24,135 sits slightly below last year's $26,344.

That price movement suggests the Forester has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today. For a future seller, that can mean less upside than in a rising market, but it also reflects a vehicle that is already trading at a more accessible level. Because the Forester has a reputation for practicality and durability, demand should remain steady if you keep mileage and condition in check.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, which gets a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Touring trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.

One caveat is that the expert review notes the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru adds the new Wilderness trim and upgraded EyeSight tech this year.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,787, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,135 average.
• It offers a simpler, value-focused setup with broad trim coverage.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $26,716, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,135 average.
• It brings further refinements to safety and infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated safety tech, strong utility, and a more favorable price than newer models, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want the newest refinements and can spend more, look to the 2023.
