CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Ascent
overall
Summary
With 172 currently listed for sale near Charlotte, NC and an average price of $25,005.00, 54.7% of 2022 Subaru Ascents for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Ascent 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Ascent stands out as Subaru’s three-row SUV for buyers who need more than five-passenger seating capacity. It carries the brand’s familiar appeal for durability, safety, and confident travel in different weather and road conditions, while also serving as the only Subaru built to carry more than five people. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Ascent also brings great safety ratings and strong value for money.
For 2022, Subaru adds a new Onyx Edition to the lineup with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery, giving the Ascent a more distinctive look and a more practical interior treatment. That said, the SUV is not without compromises. Its third row is cramped, its styling is uninspired, and it performs better with lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance turned off.

I absolutely love this car. I previously drove a Crosstrek, which I also loved and hated to part ways with. My growing family left me no choice, but man am I happy with this new ride! I didn’t need all the bells and whistles that the touring offers, but I definitely like them! The ride is smooth, and even though it is a much larger car that my Crosstrek, it doesn’t feel like I’m driving a tank down the road!

Hard to decide between Ascent touring and Volvo XC90….identical and amazing safety features that assist the driver tremendously and both cars will save your life in an accident. For me came down to holding value the Volvo resale valué is terrible with so much money lost. Also cost of service and parts much higher with Volvo. Subaru. Ascent all the safety and luxury and extra room (3rd row seating!!!) but affordability for ownership and purchasing! I bought a 2022 Ascent with just 5000 miles…..saved thousand off off a new car!!

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Ascent earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
It stands out as Subaru’s only three-row SUV, so you’re getting a family hauler built around extra seating, standard all-wheel drive, and strong safety credentials. The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped, the styling is plain, and the lane-keeping and lane-centering tech can make highway driving feel less natural when it’s engaged.
For shoppers who want a practical, weather-ready SUV with strong value, that combination is compelling. The market also shows 31.5% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Ascent’s appeal centers on Subaru’s durability reputation, standard all-wheel drive, and a practical family-focused design. Its turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, CVT, and all-wheel-drive setup are described as competent and well matched, and the powertrain is tuned for confident everyday use. Subaru also includes standard AWD and EyeSight, which reinforces the sense that the vehicle is built for dependable all-weather ownership.
The cost side is also favorable, since Subaru says it did not raise sticker prices for the model year and every version includes standard AWD and EyeSight. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same driver-assistance behavior that can feel unsettled in testing may be something you want to evaluate carefully on your own test drive.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lot of family-duty wear. Focus on cabin condition, third-row usability, and whether the driver-assistance systems behave smoothly in real-world driving. A test drive on both city streets and highway pavement will help you judge whether the vehicle feels right to you.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trim gives you the core Ascent formula, but Premium adds important equipment, and the Onyx Edition brings blacked-out exterior trim, unique interior treatment, and water-repellant StarTex upholstery. Touring adds additional convenience and tech features, while the base model is the one most likely to leave you wanting more.
- Powertrain: Every 2022 Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. Subaru’s X-Mode traction system, hill descent control, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance add capability beyond what many crossovers offer.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. Steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist are also standard, but blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires at least Premium trim.
- Infotainment: Base trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. Premium upgrades to an 8-inch display with available Starlink connected services, including a WiFi hotspot and remote engine starting with climate control pre-conditioning.
- Fuel efficiency: Versions with 20-inch wheels are rated at 22 mpg combined, and testing returned 20.5 mpg on the evaluation loop.
Which 2022 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Ascent is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point to the Ascent lineup, and it gives you the core three-row layout, standard all-wheel drive, and the basic infotainment and safety setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the trim most likely to feel stripped down compared with the others.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch display and available connected services, and it unlocks blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want a more complete daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the one to focus on.
- Onyx Edition: This trim adds blacked-out exterior trim and badges, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, special interior trim, and water-repellant StarTex upholstery. It suits you if you want the most distinctive look in the lineup and a more practical interior surface.
- Limited: This trim sits above the Onyx Edition and is part of the upper half of the lineup, making it a better fit if you want a more upscale Ascent without going all the way to Touring.
- Touring: This is the top trim and includes additional technology such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera. It’s the right choice if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts at Premium trim, so that’s the key safety-package step up to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,523 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,176.31, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $26,166 sits slightly below last year's $29,211.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is equipped. Well-kept examples with desirable trims and clean history should hold up better than average.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent safe?
The Ascent gets a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the highest possible rating in all of the organization’s assessments. Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Ascent five-star crash-test ratings in all evaluations except for rollover resistance, where the Subaru earns a four-star rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology, along with numerous collision-avoidance and driving aids. Steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist are also standard. If you want blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, you need at least Premium trim.
One caveat is that the camera-based system can struggle in low, direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering tech can feel less refined than you might want. That means you should test the system carefully before you buy, especially if you expect to use it often on highways.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year adds the Onyx Edition, which brings blacked-out styling and water-resistant upholstery.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,452, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $26,166 average.
- It emphasizes a spacious cabin and a long list of standard features.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing trend, the added Onyx Edition, and the stronger current-market inventory picture, the 2022 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly route and still gives you the core Subaru formula.
