Is the 2022 Nissan Altima a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Nissan Altima earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the Altima for its performance, fuel economy, and spacious interior, and they also like the updated technology plus features such as remote start and heated seats. The car’s design and available features help it feel more upscale than many rivals, especially if you want a sedan with broad appeal and flexibility.

The trade-offs are that some drivers want more luxury details, including a power driver’s seat and more radio options. In market terms, 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Altima is well put together, with a quiet cabin and a composed ride that support everyday dependability.

The Altima’s performance notes reinforce that impression: the suspension is smooth and comfortable, and the cabin stays quiet over rough pavement. Nissan also includes a first scheduled maintenance visit on the house, which helps lower early ownership friction.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that fleet-heavy supply can affect how individual cars were treated, so condition and service history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Nissan Altima?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re looking at a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on interior condition, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver aids work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Altima is available in five trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. Lower trims don’t look and feel as nice, and the material quality, fit, and finish improve as you move up the lineup. The Midnight Edition package on the SR adds gloss-black exterior details, LED fog lights, 19-inch wheels, a moonroof, heated front seats, and a two-way power-lumbar driver’s seat.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo with 248 hp and 273 lb-ft. The base engine is available with FWD or AWD on most trims, while the VC-Turbo is limited to the SR with FWD. All versions use a CVT.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high beams, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can get an optional Driver Assist package with similar added coverage.
• Infotainment: The S has a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, voice recognition, Siri Eyes Free, hands-free text messaging, six speakers, and one USB port. Other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and two USB ports. Starting with the SL, you also get a nine-speaker Bose system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg with the 2.5-liter engine and FWD to 29 mpg with the VC-Turbo.

Which 2022 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2022 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it’s the most stripped-down version. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the larger screen, wireless-style convenience features, and the richer cabin feel of the higher trims.
• SV: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the more useful infotainment setup and starts the move into the stronger safety package. If you want a balanced daily driver, this is the trim to focus on first.
• SR: Choose this if you want the sportier look and the available Midnight Edition package. It adds more personality and can be a smart pick if style matters to you.
• SL: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade. The Bose audio system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start make it the most appealing choice if you want a more premium-feeling Altima without going all the way to the top.
• Platinum: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped Altima and standard AWD. It’s the top-end choice for shoppers who want maximum convenience and don’t mind paying more.

Starting with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard.

• Deal availability: 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,196 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,421, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Nissan Altima's resale value?

The current average of $17,421 sits slightly below last year's $19,626.

That decline suggests the Altima has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than before. If you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less room for appreciation later, especially if supply stays healthy.

Still, the Altima’s broad appeal, strong safety reputation, and solid owner satisfaction help support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The 2022 Nissan Altima earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA in overall crash protection, front crash protection, side crash protection, and rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can add a Driver Assist package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear sonar system.

IIHS also gives the Altima its highest “Good” ratings in all six crash tests, though its headlights earn an “Acceptable” rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines two engines, AWD availability, and strong safety ratings with broad trim choice.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,209, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $17,421 average.
• It offers AWD and wireless smartphone integration.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $20,579, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,421 average.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and trim flexibility, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better value path. If you want a newer-feeling alternative and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is worth a look.
