CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 4,344 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,988.00, 32.0% of 2022 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Nissan Altima 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
78.4% of 2022 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Nissan Altima stands out by leaning on design and technology in a crowded midsize sedan segment. It gives buyers a wide range of choices with two engines, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and five trim levels, which helps it appeal to shoppers who want flexibility in a mainstream sedan. Nissan also tweaked the packaging for 2022, expanding the availability of the sporty Midnight Edition option package to include the SR trim with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
That breadth is a major part of the Altima’s appeal, along with its stylish design and standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the car has some clear limitations: the base engine is described as underwhelming, all-wheel drive is not available with the VC-Turbo engine, and there is no hybrid option. Even so, the 2022 Altima offers a practical mix of choices and features that should matter to buyers looking for a well-equipped midsize sedan.

Love this car!! Its fast, has great gas mileage, lots of room for passengers. Mine has some cool things in it. I love the all around camera it gives it such a high tech feel. I also like the remote start. This is a great car if youre looking for sporty luxury feel without the expensive price tag.

The 2022 Altima has most all the latest features that make todays cars safer such as blind spot warning and keeping the car in the chosen lane, plus all the latest technology in the touch screen infotainment. It also seems quieter than my 2015 Altima.

| Year-Round High | $19,953.22 |

Prices have softened 10.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,336 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare prices and equipment.
If you find a listing below $17,945.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Nissan Altima earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its performance, fuel economy, and spacious interior, and they also like the updated technology plus features such as remote start and heated seats. The trade-offs are that some shoppers want more luxury touches, including a power driver's seat and more radio options.
For your use case, the Altima makes the most sense if you want a mainstream midsize sedan with broad choice, a stylish design, and standard advanced safety features. It is less compelling if you want the most upscale cabin feel in the segment.
With 27.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value to be found if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its fuel economy, spaciousness, and overall comfort. Reviewers also highlight the updated technology and the kind of features that make the car easy to live with over time.
On the road, the Altima comes across as well put together, with a smooth, composed ride and a quiet cabin that supports a trouble-free ownership experience. Nissan also says the VC-Turbo engine can balance performance and efficiency by changing compression ratio on the fly.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-equipped Altima can still be let down by trim- and engine-specific compromises, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, electronics, and how well the car’s features work together. Pay close attention to trim content, since lower trims can feel noticeably less polished than higher ones.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Altima is available in five trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. Lower trims do not look and feel as nice, while higher trims bring better material quality, fit, and finish.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo with 248 hp and 273 lb-ft. The base engine can be paired with FWD or AWD on most trims, while the VC-Turbo is limited to the SR with FWD.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV, Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can get an optional Driver Assist package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear sonar system.
- Infotainment: The S uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen plus wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Starting with SL, you also get a nine-speaker Bose system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg for the 2.5-liter FWD setup to 29 mpg for the VC-Turbo FWD setup.
Which 2022 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2022 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core safety tech and the basic infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and do not need the richer cabin or larger screen.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the broader Safety Shield 360 suite and the more advanced infotainment setup without jumping all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportier look and feel, especially with the Midnight Edition package when equipped with the base engine. It adds a more distinctive appearance and extra equipment, but it is not the best value if you only want the essentials.
- SL: This is the trim to target if you want the more premium experience, including the Bose audio system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control.
- Platinum: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped Altima, including standard AWD and the highest level of comfort and convenience features.
Safety Shield 360 begins with the SV trim, while the base S can be upgraded with the Driver Assist package.

If you find a listing below $17,945.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $17,938 sits slightly below last year's $19,948.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car easier to buy now but less favorable if you are thinking about future trade-in value. If you sell later, you may need to price competitively to stand out against a large pool of used listings.
The Altima’s broad availability and mainstream appeal help keep it visible to shoppers, but its resale story is still shaped by market competition and fleet-heavy supply. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Nissan Altima safe?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the FWD version earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection, front crash protection, side crash protection, and rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Altima comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV trim, Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system.
The IIHS gives the Altima its Top Safety Pick+ designation and Good ratings in all six crash tests. It also rates the headlights Acceptable, front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle Superior, front crash prevention vehicle-to-pedestrian Acceptable, and child-seat anchors Good+.
Should I buy a 2022 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It broadens trim and package flexibility, including the Midnight Edition option on the SR with the base engine.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,544, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $17,938 average.
- It offers available all-wheel drive and wireless smartphone connectivity.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,170, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,938 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, easy-to-use tech, and strong safety ratings.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the best mix of safety, trim variety, and current-market pricing. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path; if you want a newer alternative and can spend more, the 2023 is worth a look.
