CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Nissan Altima
overall

Summary
With 4,200 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,850.00, 32.4% of 2022 Nissan Altimas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Nissan Altima 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
78.5% of 2022 Altima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Nissan Altima stands out by leaning on design and technology in a crowded midsize sedan segment. It gives buyers a wide range of choices with two engines, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and five trim levels, which helps it appeal to shoppers who want flexibility in a mainstream sedan. Nissan also tweaked the packaging for 2022, expanding the availability of the sporty Midnight Edition option package to include the SR trim with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
That breadth is a major part of the Altima’s appeal, along with its stylish design and standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the car has some clear limitations: the base engine is described as underwhelming, all-wheel drive is not available with the VC-Turbo engine, and there is no hybrid option. Even so, the 2022 Altima offers a practical mix of choices and features that should matter to buyers looking for a well-equipped midsize sedan.

Love this car!! Its fast, has great gas mileage, lots of room for passengers. Mine has some cool things in it. I love the all around camera it gives it such a high tech feel. I also like the remote start. This is a great car if youre looking for sporty luxury feel without the expensive price tag.

The 2022 Altima has most all the latest features that make todays cars safer such as blind spot warning and keeping the car in the chosen lane, plus all the latest technology in the touch screen infotainment. It also seems quieter than my 2015 Altima.

Is the 2022 Nissan Altima a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Nissan Altima earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its performance, fuel economy, and spacious interior, and they also like the updated technology plus conveniences such as remote start and heated seats. The trade-offs are that some shoppers want more luxury touches, including a power driver's seat and more radio options. In practical terms, the Altima fits you well if you want a mainstream midsize sedan with broad appeal, flexible powertrain choices, and a strong feature set rather than a luxury-first cabin. With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Nissan Altima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its performance, fuel economy, and spaciousness over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Altima is well put together, with a smooth, composed ride and a quiet cabin that reinforce the sense of everyday durability. Nissan’s dealer service reputation is also a plus for ownership confidence. If you buy used, your main long-term risk is choosing a higher-mileage example that has seen hard fleet-style use, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Nissan Altima?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the drivetrain, cabin condition, and signs of uneven wear, especially if you are comparing lower-priced listings. Pay close attention to how the car was equipped, since the Altima’s value changes a lot with trim and option content.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Altima is available in five trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. Lower trims do not feel as upscale, while higher trims bring better material quality, fit, and finish. The Midnight Edition package on the SR adds a gloss black sport grille, LED fog lights, black 19-inch wheels, a moonroof, heated front seats, and a two-way power-lumbar driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo with 248 hp and 273 lb-ft. The base engine can be paired with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive on most trims, while the VC-Turbo is limited to the SR with front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can add a Driver Assist package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear sonar system.
- Infotainment: The base S uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Starting with the SL, you also get a nine-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg with the 2.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive to 29 mpg with the VC-Turbo.
Which 2022 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?
The 2022 Nissan Altima is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Altima’s core safety tech and basic infotainment, but it is the least polished choice. Buy it only if price matters most and you are comfortable with the simplest cabin and feature set.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Nissan Safety Shield 360 and a more complete tech setup without pushing you into the highest price brackets. It is the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of value and equipment.
- SR: This is the sportier-looking choice, and it is also the trim tied to the VC-Turbo engine and the Midnight Edition package. Choose it if you want the Altima’s most distinctive appearance and are willing to pay for extra style and available performance.
- SL: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade, adding the Bose audio system, navigation, connected services, and remote engine start with intelligent climate control. It suits you if you want a more premium daily driver without going all the way to the top trim.
- Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version, and it is the one to choose if you want the most upscale Altima experience with standard AWD. It makes the most sense if you want maximum content and are willing to pay for it.
Safety Shield 360 begins with the SV trim, while the base S can add a Driver Assist package.

What is the 2022 Nissan Altima's resale value?
The current average of $17,836 sits slightly below last year's $19,955.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if you plan to sell soon. For a seller, the current pricing environment means you may need to be more competitive, especially if your car lacks desirable equipment or has higher mileage. Strong condition, desirable trim content, and clean history will matter more when the market is already softer.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, driver-attention warning, Rear View Monitor, rear door alert, and hill-start assist. Starting with the SV trim, Nissan Safety Shield 360 adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and a rear sonar system. The base S can add a Driver Assist package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and a rear sonar system.

Should I buy a 2022 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds broader trim and package flexibility, including expanded Midnight Edition availability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $16,424, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $17,836 average.
- It offers available all-wheel drive and wireless smartphone connectivity.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,044, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,836 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, easy tech, and strong safety ratings.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and feature availability, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you are willing to pay more for a newer model-year alternative.
