Overview

As part of the Nissan-Renault alliance, Mitsubishi has access to more resources, including design and build knowledge held by its corporate partners. Those influences have begun shining through in vehicles like the new Outlander, which shares much with the Nissan Rogue but improves on that SUV in many ways. The Outlander Sport is slightly smaller and shares less with Nissan than the larger Outlander, but its value pricing and great warranty make it worth a look.
The Outlander Sport received no major updates for 2022. It’s offered in five trims: S, ES, LE, SE, and GT. Mitsubishi offers two powertrain options for the 2022 Outlander Sport. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The upgraded engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard and pairs with either front- or all-wheel drive. With the larger engine on board, the Outlander Sport feels lively, but it still takes eight seconds or more to reach 60 mph from a standstill. Mitsubishi programmed in enough comfort to keep the Sport smooth and planted, but there’s plenty of body movement in the corners.
The Outlander Sport’s interior is quite basic at the low end of the trim line, and it’s feature-rich but not upscale at the top end. Acres of hard, cheap-feeling plastic dominate the interior, and the overall design is not all that easy on the eyes. A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, but the SUV requires a step up to the optional 8-inch system to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The good news is that Mitsubishi’s infotainment interface is relatively easy to use and offers a mostly intuitive experience.
Mitsubishi equips some advanced safety tech as standard, including forward-collision warnings with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warnings, automatic high beams, and automatic emergency braking. Other features, such as blind-spot monitoring, are available. The SUV did not receive a “Top Safety Pick” designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it scored decently in crash tests. The Outlander Sport was rated “Acceptable” for front driver side small overlap crash safety, “Good” in all other crash areas, “Superior” for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention, and “Acceptable” for LATCH system ease of use.
Mitsubishi offers one of the best warranties in the auto business, rivaled only by Hyundai and Kia for length and mileage. The Outlander Sport is backed by a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The downside here is that there’s no complimentary service, nor are additional bonuses such as roadside assistance included with the warranty.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is on sale now. It has a starting price of $22,640 for the base S trim, $24,640 for the ES, $25,590 for the LE, $26,890 for the SE, and $29,240 for the top GT trim.

This is our 5th Mitsubishi, and second Outlander sport, over the course of 20+ years - and they just keep getting better, VERY HAPPY with the manufacturer, the longevity and features of their automobiles, at a realistic price. Maintenance throughout our ownerships has been superb, and not over-the-top costs.
