Overview
Mercedes-Benz offers a lineup of lavish cars and SUVs—but it also has a racy side. AMG is the automaker’s motorsport and performance division. This sub-brand’s flagship vehicle is the AMG GT.
The AMG GT was first introduced in 2018 in coupe and convertible forms. The four-door variant was introduced the following year, and for 2022, it’s the only body style that’s still on the menu. The coupe model is taking a hiatus and the convertible has been discontinued—Likely so as not to cannibalize sales of the redesigned SL convertible. Though it has four doors, the AMG GT also has a rear cargo area that’s accessed via a lift back, in the style of a coupe’s. It provides 12.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
The V8-powered models also take a hiatus for 2022, leaving the AMG GT 43 4Matic Plus and AMG GT 53 4Matic Plus as the remaining models. The AMG GT 43 comes extremely well-equipped. Standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, remote start, push-button start, a 14-speaker premium stereo, wireless device charging, and a fully digital instrument panel. It also comes standard with the intuitive MBUX infotainment system, featuring an easy-to-use 12.3-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. MBUX also boasts a powerful voice control system that can respond to commands beginning with “Hey, Mercedes.”
The 43 and 53 trims offer largely the standard features. Both are available with a long list of options, including genuine leather upholstery, power soft-closing doors, massaging front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated armrests, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, and more.
Both the AMG GT 43 and GT 53 feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. In the 43, the engine makes 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, while the 53 puts out 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through a nine-speed automatic transmission to 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD). The AMG 43 has a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds and the 53 can do the same sprint in 4.4 seconds.
Both of these engines also feature EQ Boost, which is the Mercedes-Benz-branded integrated hybrid tech. Despite the difference in output, both vehicles return fuel economy of 19 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined. The AMG GT requires premium fuel.
The AMG GT comes equipped with driver-assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic assist.
Base MSRP for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 43 is $92,500. The AMG GT 53 starts at $102,560. The AMG GT is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.
