CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 574 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,260.00, 29.8% of 2022 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
78.6% of 2022 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by blending style, driving enjoyment, and a sense of value that feels unusual among mainstream compact cars. It is also one of the few remaining cars in Mazda’s lineup, alongside the MX-5 Miata, which helps explain why the brand puts so much emphasis on making it feel special. In practice, that character shows up in the car’s attractive design, its fun-to-drive nature, and its strong safety ratings.
For 2022, Mazda adds a Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. The Mazda3 Turbo models also get a standard wiper de-icer system, and Platinum Quartz Metallic is newly available as a paint color. Those updates reinforce the Mazda3’s upscale feel, and owner feedback echoes that impression by praising the comfortable, luxurious interior, impressive handling, strong turbo performance, and Bose stereo system.
The tradeoffs are familiar ones for the segment. The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is noted for poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and technology that can be unintuitive. Even so, its combination of style, driving enjoyment, and premium touches gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a compact car that feels a little more special than the usual mainstream choice.

This car is beautiful, so far no problems reliability-wise, to be expected from a tried-and-true NA 4 cyl paired to a traditional automatic transmission (no cvt unlike the current corolla and civic autos!). This car drives great for what it is. Speaking for the FWD model, handling is direct and predictable and has good feedback even with stock tires (215/45r18s on my trim). Even though this car isn’t as powerful as the turbo model, it’s fast enough to still be very enjoyable to drive. At 6’0, I surprisingly fit in the backseat of the hatch even with the front seat all the way back (not super comfortably though) and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling. Would recommend anybody interested to test drive this car.

I love this car because of its simple yet luxurious interior and it’s smooth drive. Also love the 6 speed. Perfect daily driver with room for modifications.

By far the best car in its class for performance, luxury, and technology. The turbo engine combined with already excellent handling takes the already popular Mazda 3 to an elevated level.

I love the comfort of the interior, the seats molds around your body. It has a lot of nice features that I was looking for, sunroof, keyless entry,,heater seats and a great Bose stereo that blows your mind. I wish it came with a bigger spoiler of a different color than the car. My biggest change would be to put a black package on them. They look silly with black wheels and chrome trim, I am adding aftermarket black trim everywhere. The only other thing Is, I wish it looked a little more sporty. I bought the turbo and it has plenty of kick but could have used a little bit of a different design than the regular model. For the 32k price range it was a good value in today’s market if it was a little sportier looking.

| Year-Round High | $21,876.39 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,875 |

Prices have softened 2.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 599 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare across trims and body styles.
If you find a listing below $19,877.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable, luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong turbo performance. They also respond well to the Bose stereo system and the car’s overall premium feel for the class.
The main trade-offs are the cramped back seat and technology that can feel unintuitive. That said, the Mazda3’s style and driving enjoyment make it a strong fit if you want a compact car that feels more upscale than most mainstream rivals.
Good and great deals account for 29.7% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels comfortable, luxurious, and enjoyable to live with over time, while also highlighting strong performance and a premium stereo system. That combination suggests you’re looking at a model that many owners feel good about keeping.
The expert notes also emphasize the Mazda3’s refined quality and the confidence it inspires on the road, which supports the impression of solid day-to-day dependability. If you buy used, your biggest long-term risk is less about the car’s basic character and more about choosing one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, since the Mazda3’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been kept.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S lineup offers the broadest range of choices, with five trim levels and both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive available. The 2.5 S Premium hatchback is the only version with a six-speed manual transmission, so base and lower trims may leave you without that option.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 186 hp and 186 lb-ft. The turbocharged 2.5-liter raises output to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on 87-octane fuel, or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher, while Turbo models add adaptive front headlights and the top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static infotainment display, with steering wheel controls and voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can help offset the system’s more complicated operation, and Mazda Connected Services is complimentary for three years.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 sedan returns 31 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 S range runs from 27 mpg to 30 mpg combined, depending on trim and powertrain. Turbo models return 26 mpg in the hatchback and 27 mpg in the sedan.
Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 8 trim levels: Mazda3 2.0, Mazda3 2.5 S, Mazda3 2.5 S Premium, Mazda3 2.5 S Select, Mazda3 2.5 Turbo, Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus, Mazda3 2.5 S Premium hatchback, Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus hatchback.
Here's the short version:
- Mazda3 2.0: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Mazda3 lineup, but it is also the least powerful version. It makes sense if your priority is basic efficiency and you do not need the extra equipment or stronger acceleration of the 2.5-liter models.
- Mazda3 2.5 S: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it gives you the stronger 2.5-liter engine and the broadest trim spread to shop from. If you want the Mazda3 experience without stretching into turbo pricing, this is the trim to start with.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Select: Choose this if you want an important safety upgrade, since it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is a smart step up if driver-assistance features matter to you.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Premium: This is the one to target if you want the manual-transmission hatchback. It suits you best if you value a more engaging driving experience and want the most enthusiast-friendly non-turbo setup.
- Mazda3 2.5 Turbo: Pick this if you want the strongest straight-line performance and standard AWD. It is the right move if you care more about power and all-weather traction than maximizing fuel economy.
- Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the most complete equipment set, including Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system. It is the most fully featured version in the lineup.
The safety package is strong across the board, but the blind-spot monitoring upgrade on the 2.5 S Select and higher is a meaningful step up.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?

- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 599 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,877.42, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $21,384 sits slightly below last year's $21,875.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market momentum alone.
The Mazda3’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it is time to sell. Well-kept examples with the right equipment are likely to remain appealing to used-car shoppers who want style and driving enjoyment in a compact package.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher, while Turbo models get adaptive front headlights and the top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
The safety package is one of the Mazda3’s biggest strengths, and the available driver-assistance features behave in a reassuring, low-drama way. If you want a compact car with standout crash protection and a well-rounded suite of active safety tech, this one belongs near the top of your list.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a Carbon Edition, a standard wiper de-icer on Turbo models, and a new paint color.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,499, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,384 average.
- It emphasizes a more refined, upscale driving feel.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $22,678, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,384 average.
- It adds hatchback versatility with more cargo space and a rear liftgate.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and owner satisfaction, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the value play; if you want more everyday versatility, the 2023 is worth a look.
