CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 600 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,440, 30.7% of 2022 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
79.7% of 2022 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by blending style, driving enjoyment, and a more upscale feel than many mainstream compact cars. Mazda’s own test-drive notes describe it as delivering intrinsic value, and the car’s strengths include stylish design, fun-to-drive manners, and great safety ratings. Owners echo that appeal, often praising the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine.
This model year also brings a few notable updates. A Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition debuts with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. Mazda3 Turbo models gain a standard wiper de-icer system, and Platinum Quartz Metallic is newly available as a paint color. At the same time, the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is not without drawbacks: the test-drive data calls out poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and unintuitive technology, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value design and driving character over maximum practicality.

This car is beautiful, so far no problems reliability-wise, to be expected from a tried-and-true NA 4 cyl paired to a traditional automatic transmission (no cvt unlike the current corolla and civic autos!). This car drives great for what it is. Speaking for the FWD model, handling is direct and predictable and has good feedback even with stock tires (215/45r18s on my trim). Even though this car isn’t as powerful as the turbo model, it’s fast enough to still be very enjoyable to drive. At 6’0, I surprisingly fit in the backseat of the hatch even with the front seat all the way back (not super comfortably though) and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling. Would recommend anybody interested to test drive this car.

I love this car because of its simple yet luxurious interior and it’s smooth drive. Also love the 6 speed. Perfect daily driver with room for modifications.

By far the best car in its class for performance, luxury, and technology. The turbo engine combined with already excellent handling takes the already popular Mazda 3 to an elevated level.

I love the comfort of the interior, the seats molds around your body. It has a lot of nice features that I was looking for, sunroof, keyless entry,,heater seats and a great Bose stereo that blows your mind. I wish it came with a bigger spoiler of a different color than the car. My biggest change would be to put a black package on them. They look silly with black wheels and chrome trim, I am adding aftermarket black trim everywhere. The only other thing Is, I wish it looked a little more sporty. I bought the turbo and it has plenty of kick but could have used a little bit of a different design than the regular model. For the 32k price range it was a good value in today’s market if it was a little sportier looking.

Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. The car also gets credit for its technology and Bose audio system, while the overall package fits buyers who want style and driving enjoyment in a compact car.
The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and unintuitive technology. That means you’ll likely appreciate it most if you value design and driving character more than maximum practicality.
Good and great deals account for 29.3% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling car with a comfortable interior and strong performance that many people feel good about living with over time. The expert notes also emphasize intrinsic value and a car that delivers plenty of appeal across the lineup.
Mazda Connect includes Mazda Connected Services for three years, including remote engine start, a car finder function, and automatic emergency notification after a collision.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s technology and packaging still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on interior condition, electronics, and how the car drives in real-world use. Given the model’s mixed practicality, make sure the back seat, visibility, and infotainment setup work for your daily routine.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes sedan and hatchback body styles, with the 2.0 sedan, 2.5 S, and 2.5 Turbo model series. The 2.5 S lineup offers the most variety, and the 2.5 S Premium hatchback is the only version with a six-speed manual transmission. Base versions are more limited, while higher trims add more upscale materials and equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5 Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet on 87-octane fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet on 93-octane fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher. Turbo models get adaptive front headlights, and the top 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and Mazda Connected Services adds remote functions through a smartphone app. The system also includes voice recognition, though the controls can feel unintuitive.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 sedan returns 31 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 S ranges from 27 mpg to 30 mpg combined depending on trim and powertrain. The 2.5 Turbo gets 26 mpg in the hatchback and 27 mpg in the sedan, and the turbo model averaged 23.1 mpg in testing.
Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.0 sedan, 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0 sedan: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Mazda3 lineup, but it is also the least powerful. It suits you best if value matters more than speed or extra equipment.
- 2.5 S: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it brings the stronger 2.5-liter engine and the broadest range of configurations. If you want the sweet spot between price, performance, and flexibility, start here.
- 2.5 S Select: This trim is worth a look if you want more everyday confidence, because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It makes sense if safety equipment matters and you want a more complete feature set without jumping too far up the range.
- 2.5 S Premium: This is the one to choose if you want the manual transmission in the hatchback. It also fits you if you want a more enthusiast-friendly setup without moving all the way to turbo power.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the strongest performance and the most equipment. It adds the turbocharged engine, standard AWD, Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
Safety equipment expands as you move up the lineup, with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert starting on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher.

Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year adds the Carbon Edition, Turbo wiper de-icer, and a new paint color.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,625, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,430 average.
- It emphasizes boosted power and a more polished, mature personality.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $22,671, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,430 average.
- It adds luxury-level comfort and hatchback versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and owner satisfaction, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the value play; if you want a newer-feeling package with more everyday versatility, the 2023 is worth the extra money.
