CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 3,087 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,132, 34.8% of 2022 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda CX-5 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
81.0% of 2022 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 stands out because Mazda has pushed it further toward premium territory, and the result is a compact SUV that feels more upscale than its mainstream badge might suggest. Its stylish design and fun-to-drive character are central to its appeal, and Mazda’s broader investment in design and engineering gives that premium ambition some substance. For shoppers who want a vehicle that looks polished and drives with more personality than many rivals, the CX-5 makes a strong case.
That appeal is reinforced by the turbocharged versions, which the source says compare favorably with similarly priced luxury crossovers such as the Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. It also earns great safety ratings, which adds to its family-friendly credentials. At the same time, the CX-5 is not without compromises: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and its technology can be unintuitive.

Mazda CX5 Kuro is great car and well appointed.Only one feature missing compared to my CX9 GT, that I traded, and that's Heads Up Display. Needed something a bit smaller and this car fits exactly and has the same high quality finishes .

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,128 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,161 |
| Year-Round High | $25,401 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,400 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.01% |
Prices have softened 5.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,084 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for you to compare prices and trims.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its affordability, smooth ride, and excellent safety features, and many also like the comfortable interior and strong turbo performance. The trade-offs are the cramped back seat, limited cargo space, and technology that can feel unintuitive.
For you, that means the CX-5 makes the most sense if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished than many rivals and still works well for family duty. Good and great deals account for 35.5% of listings, so there is meaningful market availability if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the model’s strong overall satisfaction and confidence in it over the long term. The expert drive notes also emphasize Mazda’s added substance through design and engineering, along with a quieter, smoother, and more solid-feeling driving experience.
If you’re buying used, that combination suggests lower emotional risk than many shoppers expect from a mainstream SUV, though you should still verify maintenance history and condition before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on cabin condition, cargo-area wear, and how the tech and driver-assistance systems operate in real use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5 S is the value play if you want the standard upscale look and the full safety suite without paying for extras. Higher trims add more premium touches, and the Signature stands out with luxury-oriented materials and a more upscale presentation.
- Powertrain: The 2.5 S uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5 Turbo delivers much stronger output and is the better pick if you want quicker acceleration.
- Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Premium trim adds adaptive headlights, and the Signature adds a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch display, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, text-messaging support, E911 automatic emergency notification, and Mazda Connected Services. The system is not touch-sensing, which can make it less intuitive than some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5 S returns 26 mpg in combined driving, while the 2.5 Turbo is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: 2.5 S base, 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo base, and 2.5 Turbo Signature.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S base: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price. It gives you the standard all-wheel-drive setup, the full safety suite, and the upscale driving feel without stretching your budget.
- 2.5 S Select: This is the first step up if you want a little more comfort and convenience without moving too far up the price ladder. It makes sense if you want a better-equipped daily driver but still care about value.
- 2.5 S Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it balances equipment and price well. It’s the trim to target if you want a more satisfying ownership experience without jumping into luxury-level pricing.
- 2.5 S Carbon Edition: Choose this if style matters to you and you want a more distinctive look. It adds visual flair while keeping the CX-5’s core strengths intact.
- 2.5 S Premium: This is where the CX-5 starts to feel more upscale, with the added Bose audio system and SiriusXM. It’s a smart pick if you want more comfort and tech without going all the way to the top.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the most compelling non-turbo choice if you want the richest feature set in the standard engine lineup. It suits you best if you value a near-luxury feel and don’t need the turbo’s extra punch.
- 2.5 Turbo base: Pick this if you want stronger acceleration and are willing to trade some fuel efficiency for it. It’s the right move if performance matters more than maximizing mpg.
- 2.5 Turbo Signature: This is the top choice if you want the most premium CX-5 experience. It adds the most advanced safety and convenience features, including the surround-view camera and Traffic Jam Assist, and it’s the trim that best matches Mazda’s premium-brand ambitions.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the most advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for the upper trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you have room to be selective without waiting forever for the right listing.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,084 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,161, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $24,128 sits slightly below last year's $25,400.
That decline suggests the CX-5 has become a bit more buyer-friendly in the used market, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if pricing is competitive. The current range also shows that values are still holding within a fairly tight band, which is a sign of steady demand rather than a sharp drop-off.
For you as a buyer, that means depreciation has already done some of the work. For a future seller, it means a well-kept CX-5 should still have a reasonable audience, especially if it’s priced near market and presents cleanly.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims add adaptive headlights, and the Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
One caveat is that the driver-assistance system can react a bit abruptly in moderate traffic when a vehicle cuts into the gap ahead. Even so, the overall safety package is a major strength and a key reason this model year stands out.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s updates push the CX-5 further into premium territory while preserving its fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,133, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,128 average.
- It offers practical family appeal with improved tech and a more engaging drive.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,906, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,128 average.
- It’s a largely carryover model with a polished interior and familiar strengths.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, safety, and premium feel, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same appeal. If you want a newer model and don’t mind paying more for a mostly unchanged SUV, the 2023 is still worth a look.
