overall

Summary
With 2,925 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,195.00, 33.1% of 2022 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda CX-5 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
81.2% of 2022 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Mazda gives the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect from a mainstream compact SUV. The updated and upgraded model is presented as Mazda’s push into premium territory, and its stylish design and fun-to-drive character help support that ambition. For buyers who want a vehicle that feels a little more special than the average family crossover, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 also stands out for its strong safety reputation, which is one of its clear strengths. At the same time, it is not the most spacious choice in its class: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and its technology can be unintuitive. Even so, the overall package is appealing because it blends a comfortable ride, upscale presentation, and engaging performance in a way that makes it feel more premium than its badge might suggest.

Mazda CX5 Kuro is great car and well appointed.Only one feature missing compared to my CX9 GT, that I traded, and that's Heads Up Display. Needed something a bit smaller and this car fits exactly and has the same high quality finishes .

How much does the 2022 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,206 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,175.35 |
| Year-Round High | $25,507.95 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,505 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.09% |
Prices have softened 5.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 3,014 listings available, you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $23,175.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its affordability, smooth ride, excellent safety features, comfortable interior, and powerful performance, especially with the turbo option. The model also fits buyers who want a more upscale feel than a typical family crossover, with stylish design and an engaging driving character. On the trade-off side, the back seat is cramped and the technology can be unintuitive.
That mix makes the CX-5 a strong fit if you want a compact SUV that feels more premium and rewarding to drive than many mainstream rivals. Good and great deals account for 29.0% of listings, so there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the model’s affordability, smooth ride, and strong safety reputation. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the CX-5’s improved solidity, quieter cabin, and smoother ride, all of which support confidence over time. Mazda’s complimentary three-year connected-services trial also helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about living with the CX-5’s cramped rear seat and less intuitive tech.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin electronics, seat comfort, and overall condition, since the model’s technology and packaging are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction. If you plan to use the back seat often, make sure the space works for your passengers before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup starts with the CX-5 2.5 S base trim, while the Signature trim adds premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. Base versions are the most stripped-down, so compare equipment carefully if you want a more upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The CX-5 2.5 S uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5 Turbo delivers 256 hp and 320 pound-feet on premium gas or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular gas. The 2.5 S returns 26 mpg in combined driving, and the 2.5 Turbo returns 24 mpg in combined driving.
- Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive headlights are added on the 2.5 S Premium, while the Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a 10.25-inch display, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The system is not touch-sensing and does not have natural voice recognition, so you should make sure you’re comfortable using the center-console controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5 S is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the 2.5 Turbo is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, base, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point for the 2.5 S and the 2.5 Turbo, but the 2.5 Turbo base mixes and matches equipment from higher trims. If you want the lowest starting price, this is the trim to compare first, though it is not the most feature-rich choice.
- Select: This is the next step up in the 2.5 S lineup and is a better fit if you want a more complete everyday package without jumping too far in price.
- Preferred: This trim is a sensible middle ground if you want more comfort and convenience than the lower trims provide.
- Carbon Edition: This is a good-value choice if you want a more distinctive look and a stronger sense of style without moving all the way to the top trims.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 10-speaker Bose premium sound system and SiriusXM satellite radio, while also unlocking Mi-Drive on the 2.5 S side.
- Premium Plus: Choose this if you want a more fully equipped 2.5 S with the added drive-mode capability and a richer feature set.
- base: The 2.5 Turbo base is the pick if you want the stronger turbo engine and are willing to pay more for it. It blends equipment from the Carbon Edition and Premium Plus versions of the SUV.
- Signature: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious CX-5, with premium interior materials and the fullest safety feature set, including the surround-view camera system and Traffic Jam Assist.
The safety package is comprehensive across the lineup, but the Signature gets the most advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,014 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,175.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $24,206 sits slightly below last year's $25,505.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than average, especially if they present as clean, well-maintained, and well-optioned.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims add more advanced protection, including adaptive headlights on the 2.5 S Premium and a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist on the Signature.
That combination makes safety one of the CX-5’s clearest strengths, especially if you want a compact SUV with a strong crash-test reputation and a broad set of standard driver aids.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s premium push is backed by stronger ride quality, quieter cabin behavior, and a more upscale feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,306, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,206 average.
- It offers family-friendly practicality with enhanced tech and a new Carbon Edition.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,965, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,206 average.
- It keeps the same appealing formula but adds no major changes.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and premium feel, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same core appeal. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year, the 2023 doesn’t bring enough change to make it the obvious upgrade.
