2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In test drive
overall
Hyundai’s redesigned Tucson doubles down on efficiency with a plug-in hybrid variant.
As if its 2022 redesign wasn’t dramatic enough, Hyundai has added hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to the all-new Tucson. With an estimated 33 miles of all-electric driving range, the Tucson PHEV looks like a slam-dunk option for folks shopping in the compact crossover market. How it performs in cold weather, however, may be enough to send shoppers looking at other options.

Yes good value. Can get more vertical space in cargo by lowering the floor. Like drive/terrain modes and proximity lift gate. Wonder about the glossy black dash though: dust, fingerprints, scratches, glare.

We didnt do a ton of research, to be fair, but we really liked the car. A little less space-snippy than the fully electric Ionia 5, but still very modern, sleek and yet comfortable. And there arent a ton of plug-in hybrids to be had!

Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating and 7.5/10 expert rating point to a strong overall package. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10. Hyundai’s redesigned Tucson Hybrid Plug-In is aimed at you if you want a practical compact crossover with electrified driving front and center, and its estimated 33 miles of all-electric range makes it especially appealing if many of your trips are short. The cabin and technology help it feel more upscale than a basic commuter SUV, and the competitive base MSRP adds to the value case. The main trade-offs are that it can be inefficient in cold weather and its styling may not be for everyone. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The Tucson Hybrid Plug-In is built around Hyundai’s redesigned Tucson platform, and the expert assessment emphasizes a comfortable cabin, strong technology, and a powertrain that delivers useful electric-only range for everyday driving. Its performance notes also point to a conventional automatic transmission and a well-controlled ride, which are the kinds of details that can matter when you’re thinking about day-to-day durability and livability. Hyundai’s maintenance positioning also helps the ownership picture. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that cold-weather operation can reduce the value of the plug-in setup if you live where winter temperatures are a regular part of ownership.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies. You should still run a history report, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and focus on how the vehicle has been used and maintained. Because this is a plug-in hybrid, you’ll want to pay close attention to charging behavior, cabin comfort in cold weather, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SEL uses cloth seats and the Limited adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated rear seats, and different front and rear fascias with a dark chrome grille and gloss-black pillars. The base trim also misses some of the more compelling tech and convenience features, so you should compare equipment closely before you buy.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup delivers 261 horsepower from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 13.8-kWh battery pack, and a front-mounted electric motor. It uses standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission, and it’s rated for 33 miles of EV range with 35 miles per gallon after the battery is depleted.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, blind-spot warning and collision avoidance, driver attention warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning. Highway Driving Assist is standard on the Limited but not available on the SEL, and the blind-view monitor is only available on the higher trim.
- Infotainment: The Limited gets a standard 10.25-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a split-screen function for secondary information. The SEL uses an 8-inch display that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: After the battery is depleted, the Tucson PHEV should return 35 miles per gallon, and it offers 33 miles of electric-only driving range.
Which 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: SEL and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SEL: This is the value play if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain at the lowest entry price. It gives you the core efficiency story, standard all-wheel drive, and the 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it leaves out several of the nicer cabin, tech, and convenience features that make the Tucson PHEV feel more upscale.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the full Tucson PHEV experience. It adds the 10.25-inch touchscreen, leather-trimmed upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated rear seats, Highway Driving Assist, and the blind-view monitor, making it the trim that best matches the vehicle’s upscale and tech-forward personality.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the Limited gets the extra driver-assistance features that make it the more complete choice.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 57 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 96.5% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In safe?
The 2022 Tucson earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS, and the Tucson Hybrid received five-star overall crash testing from NHTSA. It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts. Hyundai equips the Tucson PHEV with a broad standard driver-assistance suite that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, blind-spot warning and collision avoidance, driver attention warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning. Highway Driving Assist is standard on the Limited but not available on the SEL, and the blind-view monitor is reserved for the higher trim.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 96.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 redesign adds plug-in hybrid efficiency to a compact crossover that already stands out for its comfort, technology, and estimated 33 miles of electric-only range.
The bottom line: If you want the Tucson PHEV’s redesigned look, strong tech, and useful EV range, the 2022 is the right year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you should compare trims carefully and focus on the SEL only if you’re comfortable giving up some of the Limited’s best features.
