Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 stands out as Hyundai’s debut electric vehicle from its new sub-brand focused solely on battery electric-powered mobility. It is described as delivering on innovation, uniqueness, and approachability, and it pairs that identity with battery technology, smart car connectivity, advanced safety, and a design that is meant to feel distinctive rather than conventional.
For buyers, the appeal is in how much it offers at a price point that aims to reach a broad audience. The Ioniq 5 is noted for being spacious, technologically impressive, and equipped with standard advanced safety features. Its main drawbacks are also clear: the design may be polarizing, and its performance is described as fairly pedestrian. Even so, the overall package emphasizes value, modern features, and an easy-to-live-with electric-car experience.

There arent many crossover/SUV cars at this price point that arent Teslas. (Teslae?) Theres the Kia EV6, but in my experience comparably-equipped EV6s are priced higher. Theres the VW ID.4, but its reviews in head-to-head comparisons vs. the Ioniq 5 rate it lower in every category except handling - that includes charge time, range, cargo spaces, leg room, head room, etc. The Ioniq 5 seems to be the best entry in its class, and the styling slaps.

Test drive the Ioniq 5 Limited AWD. Above average acceleration . Handling is better than expected as taller vehicle benefits from low center of gravity due to battery location and weight as well as long wheel base and wide tire stance. Excellent materials with great fit and finish. Simplicity and minimalistic design yet extremely well equipped with safety and comfort features. Good value which would be even better but for greedy dealer surcharges/market adjustments which inflate purchase price.

I did my homework and the Ioniq5 won out over both the Tesla AWD option and the Subaru Solterra. Sleek, comfortable, and any feature imaginable! So, so happy!

How much does the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,031 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,665 |
| Year-Round High | $24,274 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,276 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.25% |
Prices have softened 9.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 710 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 earns a 4.9/5 user rating and a 9/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Technology and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, luxurious feel, and strong feature content, and many also point to its affordability relative to similar electric models. The overview also frames it as spacious, technologically impressive, and easy to live with, which fits the recurring owner feedback around value and everyday usability.
The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and fairly pedestrian performance. That means you’re getting a distinctive EV with a strong equipment story rather than a sporty one.
With 36.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers especially appreciating the car’s smoothness and overall value. The expert review also emphasizes the Ioniq 5’s EV-focused engineering and its ability to make charging and daily use feel straightforward, which supports confidence in long-term ownership.
Hyundai also includes two years of unlimited 30-minute fast-charging sessions through Electrify America, which can reduce early ownership friction if you rely on public charging.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about how the car was treated, charged, and maintained before you take over.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on an EV where charging habits and software updates matter. Focus on overall condition, charging-port health, tire wear, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the most straightforward entry point, while the SEL adds more convenience and the Limited brings the richest equipment set. The base setup already includes a strong safety and tech foundation, but higher trims add the features you’re most likely to notice day to day.
- Powertrain: Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The single-motor rear-drive setup emphasizes efficiency and range, while the dual-motor AWD version adds more power at the cost of range.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense is standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and front- and rear-collision avoidance. Hyundai Highway Drive Assist I is also standard, bringing adaptive cruise control with stop & go.
- Infotainment: The cabin uses dual 12.3-inch screens, and the system includes over-the-air updates, a digital key, enhanced smartphone pairing, and voice-recognition features.
- Range & charging: The extended-range rear-drive version offers 303 miles of range, and the AWD version is rated at 256 miles. The battery supports ultra-fast charging to 80 percent in 18 minutes, and a 350-kW charger can add 68 miles in 5 minutes.
- Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, confirm normal charging behavior, and review how often the car has relied on DC fast charging versus home charging. Also verify how much of the battery warranty remains so you know what protection you still have.
Which 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the Ioniq 5’s core EV hardware, strong charging capability, and standard safety tech without paying for extras you may not need. It makes the most sense if you care most about range, efficiency, and keeping the purchase price in check.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience and tech upgrades without jumping all the way to the top model. If you want a more complete daily-driver experience, this is the trim to focus on.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the Ioniq 5, including the richest feature set and the available head-up display with augmented reality overlays. It suits you best if you want the most premium experience and are willing to pay for it.
Hyundai SmartSense is standard across the lineup, so you’re not forced into a higher trim just to get the core safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 710 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 93.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,665, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5's resale value?
The current average of $22,031 sits slightly below last year's $24,276.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you’re starting from a lower entry point than last year’s average, which can help cushion depreciation over time.
The Ioniq 5’s strong feature content and broad appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a distinctive EV with modern tech and strong usability.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai SmartSense is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and front- and rear-collision avoidance. Hyundai Highway Drive Assist I is also standard, adding adaptive cruise control with stop & go.
The main caveat is that crash-test ratings were not yet released in the source material, so you should still check for the latest results before you buy.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 stands out as Hyundai’s debut EV from its new sub-brand, with a strong emphasis on innovation, connectivity, and advanced safety.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the original Ioniq 5 formula at a softer price and with plenty of inventory to compare. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market closely and target the lower end of the range; if you want the freshest ownership experience, this year still delivers the core strengths that made the model stand out.
