CarGurus Analysis: 2022 GMC Sierra 1500
overall
Summary
With 9,266 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,163, 32.2% of 2022 GMC Sierras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
86.6% of 2022 Sierra 1500 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a major update for GMC’s light-duty pickup, bringing a bolder exterior design, a more lavish interior, standard high-end technology, and increased utility. It also adds new trims, including the ultra-luxury Denali Ultimate and the off-road-focused AT4X, which help give the Sierra a more distinctive identity within the full-size truck segment.
Beyond its new features, the Sierra’s appeal comes from the way it blends capability with comfort. The test-drive data points to a powerful engine, great ride quality, and a spacious cabin, while owners also praise the smooth ride and luxurious interior. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: poor ergonomic design and poor fuel economy are noted, and some owners mention that pricing has increased significantly.

The only gripe or complaint I have is that GM should consider consumers who are looking for less chrome trim. In the future I’d like to see the GM trucks exhaust tips redesigned and offered in black from the factory.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, luxurious interior, and excellent features. They also highlight the strong powertrains and, in particular, the diesel’s efficiency. In use-case terms, that makes this a strong fit if you want a full-size pickup that leans more premium and comfortable than purely work-focused.
The trade-offs are that pricing has climbed significantly and some shoppers want less chrome in the design. Even so, the Sierra’s upscale cabin and broad capability help it stand out if you want a truck that can handle daily driving and towing without feeling basic.
Good and great deals make up 32.9% of the market, so there are still worthwhile listings to chase.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the truck’s strong powertrains and the kind of durability buyers expect from a full-size pickup. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize the Sierra’s smooth, compliant road manners and its confident performance across different engine choices.
The ownership risk for used buyers is less about outright dependability and more about finding a well-kept example, since higher-mileage trucks can vary widely in wear and maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and prior use. Then prioritize a close inspection of the cabin and controls, since ergonomic complaints show up in the ownership feedback. You should also pay attention to fuel-economy expectations and make sure the truck’s condition matches the trim and equipment level advertised.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sierra lineup includes Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The base trims are more straightforward, while higher trims add more premium materials, larger wheels, and more distinctive styling.
- Powertrain: You can find a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.8-liter turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. The diesel and V8s pair with a 10-speed automatic, while the turbo-four uses an eight-speed automatic.
- Safety package: GMC Pro Safety includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate.
- Infotainment: The truck gets a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in. Android and Apple compatibility are included, and wireless device charging is standard across the lineup.
- Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 13 city, 17 highway, and 14 combined mpg.
Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the entry point if you want the Sierra’s core capability at the lowest price, but it is the most basic way into the lineup.
- SLE: This is the smart step-up choice for shoppers who want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a more upscale feel than the lower trims.
- SLT: This trim adds a more premium presentation and is a strong middle-ground option if you want comfort without going all the way to luxury pricing.
- AT4: This is the better pick if you want an off-road-oriented setup and a more rugged personality.
- Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice for buyers who want a more polished cabin and premium presence.
- AT4X: This is the more serious off-road trim, with exclusive hardware and a top-end cabin; it suits buyers who want capability and luxury together.
- Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury pick, and it is the best fit if you want the most upscale Sierra experience available.
Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, so that trim stands apart if hands-free driving is a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 9,271 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.89% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $42,152, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $42,152 sits slightly below last year's $46,263.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability.
Well-kept trucks with desirable features should hold up better than average, especially if they have strong service records and clean history reports. Higher-trim examples may also appeal to a narrower but more motivated buyer pool.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 earns Good IIHS crash ratings overall, but it received a Marginal grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a Poor grade for headlights.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and it adds hands-free driving with automatic lane changes and trailering capability.
The weak spot to keep in mind is the headlight result, which is a meaningful caveat if you do a lot of night driving. That makes trim and equipment selection especially important if safety tech is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a major redesign with more upscale tech, a richer cabin, and new high-end trims.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,149, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $42,152 average.
- It offers familiar capability with multiple body styles and powertrains.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $45,237, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $42,152 average.
- It pushes luxury further with an even more upscale Denali Ultimate focus.
The bottom line: the 2022 is the best all-around pick if you want the redesign, stronger tech, and a more premium feel without moving into the next year’s higher pricing. If your budget matters most, the 2021 is the value play; if you want the most upscale Sierra experience, the 2023 is the step up to consider.
